Variety reports that Hugh Jackman and Seed Productions partner John Palermo are developing a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Fox and Seed are in development on a sequel to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which topped the domestic box office over the weekend.

The Seed partners have begun planning the sequel, which they are squarely focusing on the samurai storyline originated in the comic series, and whose Japanese locale was teased after the film's final credits. A writer has yet to be hired. Seed will produce.

With any luck, this will have a little more story (though I'm wondering which one the "samurai" storyline is).

So the Last Samurai, but with Wolverine?

Does this mean that the Silver Samurai will be the villian of Woliverine 2?

Or Lone Wolf and Cub if they decide to introduce Amiko, Yukio, or Jubilee.

The above is all that is known. Unless you know what storyline they're referring to.

While I approve of further Wolverineness - the Samurai part of his origins isn't exactly the strongest part...

Without coming up with something drastically new, I can't really see this being half as strong as the plotline in the current film. Afterall, they've already shot their load as far as Sabertooth, Stryker and Weapon X all go and they've screwed up enough of the very beginnings of Wolverine to make a Wolverine: Origin adaption impossible.

But there's PLENTY of Japanese adventures to draw from. And I wouldn't be surprised if they mixed in a little of his Madripoor stuff.

I agree...IF they keep the same tone. But they could really go askew from this one and do some very different things. Maybe focus on him trying to find who he is...or him trying to invent himself again. Bring in Ogun or Silver Samurai (and the entire Yashida clan, with a nice cameo by Sunfire). Tie Mastermind's manipulations of Mariko in with the movie-verse's Mastermind being Stryker's son, and you set up a larger connection between Wolverine and Stryker than just what the first movie provided, furthering Wolverine's anger towards Stryker.

Wolverine had am extensive past in japan. Hell, he had a wife there. I look forward to seeing which storyline they use.

I guess it's probably ruled out, but I think it would be cool to have Omega Red in a Wolverine movie... I just don't want to wait through 3 movies to get to that.

Some more info.

As expected, it will focus on the Japanese-set storyline that Jackman has been angling for in recent interviews, where his character – in an effort to control his bestial ways – trains in the way of the samurai, and also falls in love with the daughter of a Yakuza crime lord.
So Mariko and her father are more or less confirmed. Of course.

I really found all the focus on big effects and the overload of minor characters to be Wolverine 1's shortcoming, so a more character-driven story with more focus on Logan himself and less on effects would be nice. Honestly, the way I see this working best is a near straight-up adaptation of the original Wolvie mini. With some changes, of course... we have to see Logan met Mariko and they may want to take out Yukio. And you gotta have Silver Samurai for fight scenes.

I could see them combining Lord Shingen and Silver Samurai. Or possibly chucking in Matsu'o Tsurayaba. And I'm hoping to see Sunfire play a big role.

As for Deadpool:

It is understood that Reynolds would regain the ability to mouth off, with the movie going back to the roots of the character known for his slapstick tone and propensity to break the fourth wall. The character also was disfigured in "Wolverine," though it's unclear at this time how much the studio would want to mess with Reynolds' handsome mug.

So it'll involve his origins AND pick up after Wolverine. Which is good.
