Review HZ067: Shine Terastal! Liko VS Roy!!

And here he is! Crocalor at last! (y):yay:
Poor Hattrem, this just shows Liko, if you used it more in battle, she would be a better Pokemon to battle with
Yeah, they're really doing Hattrem dirty now, huh? She comes off as really strong after evolving and now she's just losing up a storm. Well, at least my boy Killowattrel got its (first ever!) win, so I'm happy about that!

(Although, I had already guessed that was going to happen based on the preview, it really made it look like Hattrem was going to lose to Killowattrel and, surprise surprise, she did.)

What an episode for the conclusion of this arc. Despite, Liko's Floragato did her best after Hattrem heal her. Sadly, it still lost. Congratulations to Roy for he now have two evolved partner on his hand. The animation is flute is very reminiscent of Ash verus Leon. Especially the Headbutt with the move set.

Overall rating: A+

The animation was great. HZ, in general, knows how to end an arc.

When both Kilo and Flora got their wins, it kinda got obvious that Fuecoco would get a win too imo. It feels like they wanted everyone to get a win, so Hattrem had to draw the short stick.

I'm glad the battle didn't end in a draw, but I feel like Liko needed a win like that. But with such a one-sided audience can you blame her?

Good to see this arc managed to go out with a bang. Great animation, Liko and Roy going all out, the Paldea gym leaders all making an appearance.

A nice way to cap off their second Paldea visit.

On top of that, they are organized a league in future by Geeta. Which already a hint they will return to Paldea again after the Rayquaza Rising after capturing three remaining of the six heroes including Rayquaza. In that time, that can wait and hope Liko is stronger engaging Explorers perusing to reach paradise before Rising Volt Tacklers did.

And just as expected with how things had gone this arc, they gave Roy the win having Liko’s battle record in this arc end at 2-4. I don’t think I would have cared quite as much had they at least let Liko win one of her battles against a gym leader or Rika but as a protagonist, the fact that the writers had her lose twice as much as she won in this arc, this was a poor showing for her.

I’ll have to wait to watch the episode for a clear judgement, but it’s sad to hear that Hattrem lost without getting at least one win. Confusion should’ve stopped any attacks on its tracks.

The writer wanted to make Liko like Ash before. Winning wasn't everything while resolving crisis and save the day is all that matter. Because since it is trait that they have been employ all these decades. Wasn't surprise, when Paldea League arrive. Liko's might be fall to either Top 16 or Top 8. So, winning champion for her is out of question. Only time will tell in fourth Arc/Season.

Difference there was that while Ash may not have won when it came to leagues until Alola, he managed both, achieving victories along the way and resolving a crisis. The 2 don’t necessarily need to be mutually exclusive. Instead, while the writers seemed to clearly be making up for how badly they had shafted Roy up to that point, rather than actually reaching a balance where the duel protagonists are at equality, they instead just shifted in the opposite direction essentially giving Roy nearly all the glory while constantly shafting Liko. It basically became an over correction. The writers gave her such a hard way to go that it’s to the point that she was the only one who actually failed her test with the gym leader not allowing her a rematch leading to her having to be passed in a roundabout way. This arc was exceptionally disappointing for Liko and I’m hoping that they give her a better showing next arc with things a little less skewed in one direction. I just don’t get how it is that after 2 times of doing this duel-protagonist thing, the writers are still having trouble with the simple concept of treating both characters equally. It’s not like there’s some finite reserve that they’re drawing from where they can only support one while shafting the other.

After the recent rather dull episodes, this one was a much needed high point and a great ending the the Terastal Debut arc! :bulbaWave: Starting off, I really like how they opened the episode with Dot's tournament battle. I thought for sure they'd just ignore it to focus on Liko and Roy, but I'm glad she got a little something. Moving on to the battle, I liked how we saw how Liko and Roy have each built their own team of supporters for the match.

The battle itself was really nice, and a good way to actually show how much Liko and Roy have grown since the beginning of this arc, and heck, the beginning of the series. We see them switching their Pokémon when necessary, utilizing their moves and skills they've learned over time, and overall presenting that development which has been needed. I was pleased with how Kilowattrel did in this battle since he really hasn't gotten much use since his capture. So seeing him get a win by defeating Hattena was great. Hattena meanwhile did great as an asset by healing Floragato with her ability.

I really liked that Fuecoco bust out with his new song and got so many cheers from the entire audience. It made the entire evolution scene so much more enjoyable. The final clash between Crocalor and Floragato in their Terastallized states was very well animated, as was much of the battle in general. I'm so so SO happy Crocalor defeated Floragato and Roy won. I've been waiting the entire series for this. For so long, all we got was Liko winning almost everything and Roy losing. This arc was great in reversing Roy's losing streak and giving Liko some much needed loses. I've been wanting that for a while, so this was the prefect way to end the arc for me. It was great to see how Liko, Roy, and Dot have grown through this arc though battle skills and evolutions.

Moving into the Rayquaza Rising arc, it'll be interesting to see how the kids continue to make progress getting back to their primary journey with their new skills. I'll rate this as a 9/10 since I really don't have too many complaints. :bulbaLove: My only real issue was Killowattrel spamming Spark a bit much, and I feel he could have battled against Floragato for a bit longer before going down, but the rest of the battle makes up for it. Nice conclusion to Terastal Debut!

Personally I disagree about the take that Liko somehow deserving an arc that was basically a string of losses because the writers bolstered Roy’s victories this arc. The 2 of them are duel protagonists, the victories of one should not come at the expense of the other. At that point rather than balancing out things between the protagonists, it just becomes an overcorrection, now favoring the opposite protagonist while shafting the other. What this should have been in this arc is having them both grow their individual battle skills while showing that both are winning formulas even in the face of a disadvantage. That way when you come into this final battle, things don’t look so skewed in the favors of one over the other.

I don’t look forward to getting back to the heroes storyline as it’s my least favorite aspect of the series but I honestly hope that Liko gets a better showing in the next arc than she did in this one and that maybe the writers can finally learn some balance.
