Review HZ107: Two People, As Friends

What a fantastic episode and also great reveal is Dragonite originally belong to Uruto's father. What a major plot twist. Love to see how Roy and Uruto escape from the clutches of Spinel Underlings. Not without Mega Evolve to beat the crap outta of them. What a great debut for Mega Dragonite.

Overall rating: A -

Not a bad episode even if the battle itself was okay. Some real good animation too between Cap's sakuga moment and the debut of cute and cuddly Mega Dragonite as well as a big reveal about it too.

Nice to see that both Diana and Hamber are on good terms again with them agreeing that Liko and Amethio will be the key to stopping Spinel.

I had fun watching the episode. I am glad Uruto got some character developement, he really needed it, since before this two parter, he kind of just... was there, without us knowing anything about him. This battle was a good way to force Roy and Uruto to collaborate and show off the mega dragonite in a cool way. Also, I can never not laugh a little bit at the way Spinel is talking. He sounds so... posh? Not sure how to describe it ahahah

But not without spanking a battle, I presumably capturing Revavroom. Knowing they will be Spinel target if his underlings come after them as well. Just a shamed, they don't feature so often from Liko and Dot as studio too lazy for that:

They really took the time to focus on the battle this episode so it was great. I always like these kind of fights with multiple Pokemons. It would have been lame if Roy and Ult didn't use all their Pokemons when trying to escape, even if it made things a bit more chaotic and messy. Also, Indy and Rubella gave us a great showing of both Zen Mode Darmanitans (even swapping them just for color preferences xD), and an even greater introduction to Rabsca. This a crazy strategy, they just had an army of Rabsca on hand to "resurrect" their Pokemons! The moment Ult got caught due to Gravity really reminded me of Bleach, and the way spiritual pressure would force characters to the ground. It looked like Spinel was crushing Ult with his aura xD

The narrator for the next episode caught me off guard (explosion sound DIANA. COMES. BACK. ) It looks like Diana is making a completely over-the-top return with a sunglasses-wearing Arcanine, a Revavroom powering a car, and a Rotom-Wash. A lot of fun in perspective.

Murdock appears to have a flair for the dramatic.

A really good episode that establishes Uruto's character! He's just been someone who had a vague idea of what it meant to be the strongest. He set sights on Rayquaza, believing that a strong Pokemon meant being the strongest, but he learns that being strong means to protect anyone you hold dear. I'm guessing that the idea of wanting to be strong comes from him losing his father?

I think this was also the toughest Indy and Rubella have been since their debut.

The preview was absolutely legendary--please have Murdock narrate the previews going forth!

The battle was really cool and Roy’s team was getting cooked, it was nice to not see Lucario overpowering everything easily. The gravity strategy + psychic combination was neat. I do find that the way they quickly cut into the forest after the battle ended, was abrupt. Specially with all of Spinel’s talk about luring the rising volt tacklers… he could’ve intervened directly if he wanted to stop them, but I guess this is one of those convenient situations where they led the heroes go just to gather more data on them.

Liko's Grandmother and Hamber discuss the current situation after catching an unspecified Pokémon. Meanwhile, Ult makes his way to the Explorers' base and gets captured. He has Sableye leave. Sableye then finds Roy and leads him to the base (while Spinel and Agate discuss their plans), where he rescues Ult. Indy and Rubella show up and have the courtesy to actually introduce themselves. They then switch Pokéballs and send out their two Darmantain, who enter Zen Mode (apparently, Indy and Rubella consider their theme colors more important than sticking with a Pokémon. An unexpected quirk for the stoic grunt duo). They then use Strong Spheres on their Pokémon. Roy and Ult send out all of their Pokémon (Dragonite excluded), and shortly into the battle, the grunts have a group of Rabsca use Gravity.

The grunts' strategy works quite well, but Roy comes up with a strategy to defeat the Unovan Darmanitan. Roy's strategy successfully defeats the one Darmanitan, but then one of the Rabsca revives it. The two Darmanitan then swiftly defeat Roy and Ult's Pokémon. Ult then asks Dragonite to come out so Ult can protect everyone. After a brief flashback of someone telling Dragonite to help Ult if he is trying to help someone, Dragonite comes out. Unfortunately, Gravity works on Dragonite as well, at least until Dragonite Mega Evolves. After everyone is done expressing their surprise at this new development, Dragonite defeats the Rabsca (Ult even getting to command it this time), and then Roy and Ult's other Pokémon get back up. Roy Mega evolves Lucario, and the two Mega Evolutions defeat the two Darmanitan. The episode then cuts to Roy and Ult in the forest heading back to the Brave Asagi. Ult declares that he now wants to be the strongest in order to protect everyone he cares about, including Roy. Roy comments on his inclusion as someone Ult holds dear, and the two of them argue a bit before being interrupted by Cap. Roy and Ult laugh, and then the episode cuts to the Brave Asagi. Liko asks Roy and Ult where they've been, and Ult tells them in a manner that makes him sound cooler. Roy then denies Ult's interpretation of the episode. The conversation continues a bit, then Roy heads off to take a shower, and Ult heads outside. He thanks Mollie for not telling everyone he ran away, and they talk for a bit.

The natural counterpart to LikoDot is RoyUlt, but I haven't been convinced by the latter until this episode. In particular, Ult including Roy as someone he holds dear and then denying it right after, is a very Ult-like way of showing he holds Roy especially dear (fans with a broader interest in subbed anime will know this behavior as being a tsundere and even fans who don't watch other anime will find it a familar pattern if they are long time viewers of the Pokémon anime). Besides, Ult is too shy around girls to ask any of them out and unlikely to get a yes if he could manage it, so Roy's his only option at this point, and it's not like Roy's got a lot of options either. I'm not saying either pairing will become canon, but my point is the subtext definitely leans LikoDot and RoyUlt if it leans anywhere at all (and LikoDot is a hill I will die on, RoyUlt is more of an I see it but don't really care much scenario).

Yeah I also felt like they transitioned too fast from "we're in the middle of the enemy base" to "walking peacefully in the forest". For the same price, they could at least have showed Roy and Ult running away. It's just a detail, it doesn't matter that much, you mentally make the bridge between both scenes no matter what, but it still bothers a tiny bit.

I really hope Spinel puts his money where his mouth is. It's hype when a villain say "let's nip them in the bud" because it means they're not underestimating the heroes, so hopefully the Explorers will quickly launch an attack on the Brave Olivine or do something that will really prove they have to be taken seriously. If Spinel does nothing after saying that, it will be really disappointing.

Oh I really liked that part btw. I'm glad they included these small interactions between Mollie and Ult both episodes. Honestly I'm happy whenever the adult RVTs get to interact more personally with the "main" characters, and here it's nice since Mollie mentions, she knows how it feels to run away from home. I don't have high expectations, but I'd like it if she became Ult's confident whenever he doesn't feel like he can be honest with Liko/Roy.

So is this Revavroom, or Wash Rotom?

I'm sure, it is Revavroom. Otherwise, why Diana riding one of it to reach Liko out of nowhere in next episode preview? Also gotta love the effect from Dragonite Mega evolve:

Not the best episode on Earth but still fun. The highlights were definitely Hamber and Diana being on good terms after all they've gone through and the creative use of Darmanitan.

Also, is this the first time in 28 years a Pokemon has been revived within the same battle?

Why would Diana need a Revavroom when she has an Arcanine.

We get a whole lot of foreshadowing and set up for the ending in the conversation between Diana and Hamber. How this conflict has been passed down over time, and now comes down to the descendants of Lucius and Gibeon to settle it once and for all. I’m interested to see what Pokémon the two caught. I’d imagine a Pokémon getting a new Mega Evolution in Z-A.

I almost forgot how cold and intimidating Spinel could be. The way he seems so composed and smiles, and the tone of his voice, is unsettling. Plus, he isn’t taking the RVTs lightly. He knows that even if they couldn’t do it alone, when they work together, they can get it done. It seems like he is transferring the Five Heroes he has in his possession for some reason.

I like how Ult saved Sableye, which is what allowed Roy to come save him. Of course, capturing Ult was just a ploy to draw in more of them. I think he and Roy have a good dynamic and I’m looking forward to seeing how they met and became friends/rivals in their special episodes. We get a bit more information on where Dragonite came from. I’m assuming it previously belonged to his father? Seems like he gave it the directive to respond to when Ult wants to protect someone, but they’ll learn to work together as partners in time. What I found interesting was how Dragonite Mega Evolved on its own, although it seemed to have a Dragoniteite or whatever it’ll be called. Also the fact that the grunts said that they had never heard of a Dragonite Mega Evolving before. And I know we’re a little tired of Lucario and Dragonite, but seeing their Megas fighting side by side was cool. Finally, Ult found real conviction behind his desire to become the strongest - that being the strongest means being able to protect everybody, which is why he’ll do it, and officially-officially viewing himself as a member of the RVTs.

We finally get the names of the new grunts, Lubell and Indi. I thought it was funny that they’re so committed to their respective colors that they have to literally switch Darmanitan when they go Zen Mode because of their inverted coloration. At least that gives them something interesting. They had a pretty unique battle strategy, using Unovian Darmanitan’s Psychic to move the Galarian Darmanitan under the effects of heavy gravity. They were actually very well coordinated.
