Review HZ117: Quiz Time! What is Uruto's Training?

An okay episode, where Lacey questioning on Uruto before going into battle which end up ultimate loss. Also how dirty as Briar treating Liko like servant. While Dot having scare battle with Carmine's Sinistcha in the most cringe way.

Uruto can't answer any of the question till being attacked by the Alola Exeggutor and battling it to win from Dragonite. At the same time, revealing it ownership from his father. Not surprised at all.

Overall rating: C+

The battle was short but passable at best. It is nice to see Ult starting to make progress bonding with Dragonite. But I have come to the realization that Ult hasn't really won any battle with Sableye except against Wild Pokémon. I really hope that changes in the future. Otherwise, the rest of the episode only made marginally progress to finding out how to handle the Strong Spheres and Laqium. Also, I am rather unmoved by Gimmighoul, save the fright battle between it and Sinistcha.

Lacey deserves a raise and a vacation and a promotion. And a bonus for having to deal with Drayton's... unorthodox approach to his duties.
Oh wait, no one is paying her for this at all, right? And I am willing to bet her only reward for being such a good kindergarten teacher is going to be more work...
Briar going nonverbal when in full hyperfocus mode is relatable...
(Btw, I will never not consider this hilarious when in a series doing what is essentially novel biology and physics research consists mostly of reading books, staring at computer screens and making notes and then suddenly having answers out of the blue.)
Liko is such a people pleaser, with taking over the assistant duties. Carmine being jealous about it makes sense considering her competitive nature.
Finally, we also have confirmation that Kieran at least exists in this continuity. This still does not mean we will see him appear though. The comparison of Dot to Kieran was... interesting I guess.
Dragonite is cute, and Uruto gets some more character growth, but remains a forever tsundere. At least he did show some, abeit half assed, gratitude to Lacey.
Overall, fun to watch episode.

So from what I've been hearing from people is they thought this episode felt like it was a nothing burger as no progress or training was done other than Ult and his Dragonite bonding.

What do YOU think?

If Uruto bonding with Dragonite is not progress, then I am curious what "progress" would look like. Uruto is not my fave, not even by a mile, but it is unfair to not give credit when its due.

This was the episode of all time x2 :wynaut:

I liked it overall even if it was kinda slow, Dot and Carmine was not the pairing I expected to see in all honesty (also is carmine blind what resemblance do kieran and dot have beyond "purple")

I think Lacey and Ult were fun again their dynamic is goofy and I'm always up for an older sister character + Drayton never ceases to be the funniest character on screen

Normally not one for episode ratings but this one warrants being 7/10!! Now to wait for next week because we're finally getting an Ann episode AND a Hattrem episode :yay:

Lookit da baby

Think this episode is a good standard for "good episode". I liked it!

"Oh hold on, we finally getting Dot battles?"
"Ope, nope, Gimmighoul."

Drayton continues to be best character lol
Lacey also continues to be best character XD

Nice to see Ult actually bonding with Dragonite, progress is being made!

Love how Lacey broke the fourth wall when she said "Quizzes will continue right after this" and then the eye catches show up.

It's crazy how it's Lacey of all people who's taming Ult to finally get his act together. You'd think he'd get his act together by now, but it had through be two of his biggest weaknesses: girls and studying.

Like what someone here just said, Ult never had an on-screen win from a Trainer battle by himself. He's always participating in double or multi battles, but his individual strength is pretty weak. He only wins via wild Pokemon battles. I just think that's a nice detail they brought up.

The fact that Carmine finally brings up Kieran means that he'll show up whether it be in BB academy or not?

And that battle between Gimmighoul and Sinistea was a joke. Dot's really getting the short end of the stick when it comes to training...

Ok after watching it, it wasn't that bad and I did like Ult bonding with Dragonite alot, though I did feel the Briar and Carmine parts were a bit thumb twiddling at times.

I think I would have liked to see Liko, Dot, and Ann back in the Terarium if they weren't going to do too much with Briar and Carmine to advance how to deal with the Laqium.

my girlfriend sent a picture of liko and meowscarada with pagogo in this episode.

liko and meowscarada coparenting.png

and it gave me the idea for a joke because in this picture it kind of looks like liko and meowscarada are pagogo's parents

liko when asked about her parenting goals for pagogo: well, i want pagogo to grow up and be happy and successful and full of love!
meowscarada when asked about her parenting goals for pagogo: make sure she doesn't kill herself

she/her-ing pagogo for fun and also whimsy

damn i finally got around to watching the episode (i usually end up watching them saturday nights instead of friday nights) and am i the only one that REALLY enjoyed this episode? i was surprised finishing it and then opening this thread and backreading through all the mixed reactions! personally, i felt it was comedic (or at least i found it really funny) which is what i expected from the preview but it also had a genuine emotional beat with ult that i enjoyed and even my favorite dot got a little bit of screentime that wasn't just being tricked by her collecurei for 5 seconds before cutting away (yeah the bar is in hell but whatever! i'm happy!)

taro and ult's dynamic in this episode was actually better than i expected. i don't really like the trope of the girl character putting up with the boy character's BS for lack of a better way to describe it, but taro actually felt pretty in control of the interactions this entire episode. she kicked ult's butt in battle and from then on she seemed to be having fun with him even lol. and she was observant enough to realize that ult had a genuine reason under all his immaturity and bravado for wanting to be stronger and she was the one who dragged a little bit of an emotional beat out of him, not forcibly but just by being understanding and bonding with him over the course of the episode. i really liked it! and also taro makes some really incredible expressions, i loved her incredulous face at kakitsubata in the bit with her plusle and minun. really all of ult and taro's A plot was funny as hell, every bit landed for me, maybe i'm just easily amused tonight LOL

horizons' interpretation of seille so far fascinates me a little. i haven't played the DLC plot of SV in a while (well, while actually reading the dialogue and not just spamming A to go catch another ogerpon or terapagos as fast as possible) but i feel like in the game iteration of her, her serious and down to earth side isn't quite as visible? she's still hotheaded (her getting jealous of liko helping briar and then liko being able to effortlessly help briar herself once seille was offscreen was amusing) but like, she immediately realizes she's the one who chased collecurei off and feels bad about it and even dot is like, huh, do you feel bad for it? like even she's a little surprised lol. i'm enjoying it though! and the astonish battle between collecurei and yabasocha took me out. really giving that one metapod battle from early anipoke for me. just two little guys in containers jumpscaring each other and for some reason both their trainers are really into it. incredible. (btw i had to ask my friend and gf to pause the episode when seille compared dot to suguri because last year in april or so i was talking about how dot and suguri are so similar in a bunch of ways and since dot is my favorite HZ character and suguri is my favorite SV character i must have a type of character that i like and it's ONION HAIR. ...in speaking of which seille comparing dot's hairstyle to suguri's during the time that dot's hair looks the least like him is a little funny. anyway wonder if this will be a throwaway line or if suguri will show up sometime, idc either way)

oh yeah random but liko talked about pagogo's love of sweet things and i passively wondered what nature pagogo might be if we assumed that its favorite flavor is sweet like how pokemon have favorite flavors in the games. there is precedent for this because liko's masquernya is canonically quirky nature (confirmed by the in-game distribution of Liko's Nyahoja, the one with the partner ribbon) which is associated with the bitter flavor and we found out that she loved bitter things (matcha!) all the way back when she was a nyahoja.
hz2.png
the possible options for sweet as a favorite flavor are timid, hasty, jolly, naive, and serious. out of all of those i'd think naive to be the most fitting, especially because right after sharing pagogo's favorite flavor, liko goes on to talk about how pagogo is super curious and wants to touch anything unusual (like a baby) and she has to take a beaker of god knows what away from it. there is a case for the jolly nature but naive just seems more fitting to me, and while stats like this really don't matter in an anime context, it's worth mentioning that jolly detracts from special attack and pagogo is mostly a special attacker. so it'd just be a little awkward lol.

oh and final note, this frame that appeared for like half a second of liko and dot's faces in this scene was priceless and i rewound just to get a better screencap of it LOL

(my friend pointed out that welkamo and masquernya don't react until their trainers fall over and that's a cute little detail because they probably weren't fully understanding the conversation but their trainers falling over still surprised them lol)

my girlfriend sent a picture of liko and meowscarada with pagogo in this episode.
YOU POSTED IT WHILE I WAS STILL TYPING MY EPISODE REVIEW LOL
i wheezed

I enjoyed the duo of Ult and Lacey for this episode, they had fun chemistry and bounced off each other well. Lacey was the perfect choice to teach Ult how to think intelligently. But to be fair, Ult didn't even know how to read not too long ago. He doesn't seem to have had a traditional childhood up to this point. The scene where he was trying to guess where Pikachu stored his electricity was great. I was skeptical about Ult when he was first revealed but I've really grown to like his presence in the group and his development. Now he is making real progress with Dragonite.

Kieran is real. I wonder if we'll eventually get to see him in some form. Would be funny if he has been here the whole time. Carmine has definitely been done justice in her characterization at the very least.

I like that we got another Metapod vs. Metapod type battle between Gimmighoul and Sinistcha. The coin collection grows larger every day.

oh my god!? this episode was actually incredible, I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did!

Usually, Gimmighoul being in an episode has a 90% chance to ruin the whole thing for me, but here it was fine. I like that it sort-of forced Carmine and Dot to get along and get to know each other, and they actually make for an interesting pair as a duo of girls who initially seem offputting and rude but are not like that deep down. I'm hoping we get to see more of them interacting in the future.

The stuff with Ult was just perfect, no notes. I didn't understand why they paired Ult and Lacey together until the answer was right in front of me, but they make for a great pair that moves Ult's character forward, much like Drayton and Roy as a pairing serve to teach Roy to relax again after becoming so serious after Friede's disappearance. Ult finally connecting with Dragonite in a meaningful way was amazing, the two of them seem like they're going to have a great relationship (and Ult's angsting about not being able to protect everyone felt very HZ, in the sense that it adds depth to the characters and gives them human struggles).

In general, after an entire arc of mediocrity, I'm really happy to see Rising Again getting back on track with the amazing writing that made me fall in love with Horizons in the first place...! I was worried the show lost its shine for a while, but it seems to still have a lot in stock for us!
