Cheat CC Mystery Dungeon Review

I found this while rummaging for wonder mail codes.
I read it and I was offended. Don't get me wrong, I CAN handle a pokemon games getting a bad review, but not if it's written by someone who glossed over it in 5 mins and knows nothing about it.

The writer has an obvious lack of info (before I emailed them, the developer was listed as CAPCOM) about the game and only listed the features found in the first 5 minutes of playing (basically the "tutorial" with Tiny Woods and TW cave.)

Am I just over reacting or is this as inaccurate as I think it is. Reviews are meant to be fact, and if the writer is not a pokemon fan, that shouldn't get in the way.

Now I can see how they could say that it's repetitive from other games from other series (haven't played it, but it sounds a lot like Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon), but it's certainly nothing like any of the other games, so I don't know where they're getting that from.

That's right it kind of is, seeing as how it's based on Chocobo's MD, but the only time the writer said anything good about it was the features at the bottom (taken from the back of the case.) He obviously didn't play it very long. There is no-one alive that can say it has a bad story!

The plot is what made Mystery Dungeon great. And as for being like other games in the MD series, I have never played one and I hear they weren't translated anyway so that wouldn't affect me.

Should this be in "Pokémon Video Games"?

There’s little to work for in this game as it’s all just dungeon crawling,

That is truth.

which is superficial

Truth.

and repetitive.

And that.

There’s little advantage to owning the DS version over the GBA version since it was originally designed for the GBA. That means the graphics and sound are likely to suffer, and they do.

And that.

Even though the dungeons are different, they all use the same standard formula. In fact, the entire gameplay is formulaic. Been there, done it.

Yup.

Your character has mysteriously been transformed into a Pokemon. Not only will you have to figure out what has happened to you, but in the meantime you will be asked to take advantage of your new-found powers to join the Pokemon Rescue Team and assist fellow Pokemon in danger. This breaks down into exploring the area, entering a dungeon, collecting the loot, avoiding the traps and pitfalls, combating enemies and then finding your way to the exit. When you return home to a hero’s welcome you can look forward to doing it all over again, and again and again.

Again, all truth. Especially the "again and again" bit.

Dungeons are randomly generated so that they are never the same twice, but the structure is always identical.

Yup.

You do get to customize some attacks, link various moves and add new characters to your party but you won’t find that these features add much more depth or strategy to the already over-simplified combat system.

"Assign attack to A; Hit A; Wait for Enemy to die; Rinse and Repeat".

The wireless connectivity may be a disappointment since you can only trade with it, but so are the other exclusive DS features such as the touch controls and dual screen.

Teh Truth.

Using the stylus is sloppy and cumbersome compared to the D-pad which is not only more precise but has a good feel to it. The graphics are definitely not up to DS standards and the sound effects and soundtrack are bare bones. You’re not getting your money’s worth with the production values but to be fair I didn’t come across any technical problems.

There seems to be no end to the truths.

I’m confident that you’ll eventually grow weary of the repetitious dungeon crawling.

Me too.

Like I mentioned, it’s not a bad game and you’ll probably enjoy it if you’re a brand loyal Pokemon fanatic.

And this is the biggest truth in the entire review.

So... uh... what's the problem with the review exactly? It's probably the most accurate review i've actually read about the game.

I got to agree with Doctor Oak. It's not a brilliant game (though it far from sucks, it was worth the money). The plot however is grabbing and the antics before and after missions is entertaining.

Though I haven't played a dungeon crawling game since we got rid of our Black and White Computer (I think Bush41 was still in the White House when that happened) so it was a relatively new experience for me. Considering the dungeon is different each time, you can crawl until your eyes fall out of their sockets.

It wasn't a "LOLZ EET SUX CUZ EETS POKEEMAN!" review. Then you'd have reason to be offended.

This is only the same argument against the pokemon franchise as a whole. Although, I must say that this is the only Dungeon game to ever make it to the American shores. There has to be some credit to that, if anything.

As for the repetition factor, as true as it is, I find it to be an excuse to hate something as countless series have been successful on so-called repetitious gimmicks. People obviously like these games despite them being the same thing over and over, so your argument is null and void. If you want to call them fools, then that is to your own discretion, but there is obviously more to gaming than the surface.

who do you mean with "people"? because the users here are pokemon fans, many of them ( including me ;p) are hardcore enough to register here and talk manly aout pokemon. Of course people here tend to like it more than an "average" pokemon fan.

I agree with the article very much. I´ve played the game for..mh...7-8 hours and liked it ( still saving the money for buying it..it was a expensive months ^^; ) but it IS pretty much the same over and over again with simple GBA layout.

I've seen worse reviews in magazines. Such as the one which states "You can't catch any Pokemons except for sucky ones or ones only on a special list that never changes". -_-

Oh. My. God. Are you serious?
Again, this proves my initial point. The people that give the bad reviews don't give the game a chance. They just assume it's a kids game, find fault with it, then move onto the next big shoot-'em-up or racing game.

Point taken, but you can't tell me that their precious shoot 'em ups, racers, or any other games like that are not also the same thing over and over at the core.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is a great game, the plot was great, Moltres and Rayquaza were hard, and people who would give this game below a 7 just hate Pokemon overall.

Or maybe they find the repetitiveness too much of a put-off.

Not me, but I can see where the people who don't like it are coming from.

I guess so, repetiveness and overlaying floors did kind of suck, but still, who doesn't love the possibility of a good monster house!
But still, if I had to rate this game, I'd give it a 7.5.
