For reference, the first cry you'll hear is Zubat's. The one that sounds like Crobat's is the last in the video.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if that was the case, after all, if you look at the Pokémon by index number, you will see that there are slots where Missingno will become a Generation II Pokémon if traded to a Generation II game. Crobat being one of those Pokémon. Shigeki Morimoto did say that there was originally going to be 190 Pokémon in the first games after all.

There are like 40 cries in the game, just set up to different filters. And a ton of different "Missingno" with different cries. Though those that do share garbage data will naturally share the same cry, as it'd be the same random base cry to the same random settings.

Calling all combinations of base cries and filters unused would be silly. Not to mention garbage data picked for the base cry (hello locking the game up with a series of songs and things that aren't songs for a cry)

Hi, as the author of this video I'd like to clarify some things.

There are like 40 cries in the game, just set up to different filters. And a ton of different "Missingno" with different cries. Though those that do share garbage data will naturally share the same cry, as it'd be the same random base cry to the same random settings.

38 actually, including base cry 0 (Nidoran♂). All Missingno. share garbage data, either be because of their garbage sprite data (I don't know the exact location where it loads it from), or because of their base stats, starting moves, TM/HM compatability, although for the ghost/fossil Missingno. which have valid sprites, the above in game will depend on data last loaded into the game's memory. I don't know exactly how this works.

To find Missingno.'s base stats and starting moves in Red/Blue the game uses the algorithm 0x0383DE + (PkmnNo. - 1) * 0x1C. As Missingno. and 'M are number 000, the game adds 256 and coincidentally it erroneously starts reading from the offsets of a Biker's roster.

In all there are 39 "Missingno." in between the index numbers of real Pokémon. The cry data for Pokémon is located at 0x39446 in Red/Blue and just follows on with three bytes for every cry (ID, pitch and length). If you look in a hex editor, you'll see the cry data for valid Pokémon in index ordering and some of the cry data for 'Missingno.' Of the 39 Missingno. most of them (30) have entries as "00,00,00" which means you get a Nidoran♂ cry with 'pitch 0' and 'length 0', so those cries aren't random in the literal sense, (unlike you could argue post 190 glitch Pokémon and only certain channels of background music) but are rather undefined. Nine Missingno. however, have their own data, for instance 69 (hex:45) is "29, 224, 64". It differs from Zubat only slightly, which is "29 (Squirtle), 224, 128". Another example is 181 (hex:B5) the so called 'Wartortle'/'Crobat' this uses "29 (Squirtle), 0, 128".

For reference, the first cry you'll hear is Zubat's. The one that sounds like Crobat's is the last in the video.

Generation II uses a table to calculate the equivalent Pokémon starting from 0xFBA26 (more information here). For example, the first byte from 0xFBA26 is 0x70 (112) meaning that Generation II's 0x70 (Rhydon) becomes 001 (Rhydon). The second byte is 0x73 (115) meaning that Generation II's 0x73 becomes 002 (Kangaskhan) and so on. While it might be significant some Missingno. became Generation II Pokémon (e.g. the 31st/1Fth byte is for Scizor 0xD4 (212), I find it a mystery because the equivalent for each Missingno. follows on in Pokédex order and in proper evolutionary order e.g. Missingno. (hex:3F) is Slugma, Missingno. (hex:43) is Magcargo, where as Generation I's index ordering didn't match the Pokédex numbers, and evolutionary stages were often far apart (e.g. Clefairy = index number 4, where as Clefable is index number 142), which could be argued against what they equate to having any significance.
