We will have over 500 Pokemon, can we have some variety pre-E4? DP was absolutely horrible at this (2 fire type families? Seriously!?).

And if almost a fifth of all pokes are water type, why can I only find 2 or 4 types when surfing on any route and to get the rest I have to fish in some cave?

Gold/Silver didn't do it, and it had a great deal of options for in-game use.

Re: I hope there is none of this reigonal dex nonsense this time.

Well gold and silver only introduced about 100 pokemon. Close to 600 pokemon or more may be a little much to find in game.

Re: I hope there is none of this reigonal dex nonsense this time.

Then what do we have 500 for if it's too many to use?

DP, as well as the other games after it, at least let you trade for pokemon not in the regional dex as soon as you get your first pokeballs. As long as that stays in BW, I don't really mind regional-dex.

I can only guess that the point of one is to try and give the pokemon featured in it some time to shine, though it doesn't always work, some mons get a lot more than others, and some just love showing up long past their introduction. I'm looking at you, Zubat, Geodude, and Tentacool. You've been in every single game, and we all know you're going to be in this one. Why GF loves to shove them down our throats I'll never know.

Re: I hope there is none of this reigonal dex nonsense this time.

Gold and Silver also didn't have some of their Johto Pokemon in Johto despite the fact that its regional dex was a renumbered National dex.

Re: I hope there is none of this reigonal dex nonsense this time.

I'd prefer to know what were getting before I say "No Regional dex" as long as there is a decent choice of Pokemon, I don't see why there wouldn't be a regional dex.

Sure some old Pokemon could show up in the regional dex, no problem, but I'd prefer not to have all available Pokemon be available. I'd actually like to be forced to use Current Gen Pokemon; instead of relying on for example Lucario in Black and White.

Re: I hope there is none of this reigonal dex nonsense this time.

HGSS didn't even bother to have you finish filling the dex to get the regional dex, thus making the regional dex really pointless. What that says for the future I don't know. I'd like the regional dex to be gone, and yet I don't. I like the unlockables after beating the league.

Huh? What do you mean, are you talking about not finishing up the regional dex to get the national dex?

But, my point on this is that I don't see what the problem is with the regional dex, as long as they keep the pokemon from that region, and once you've filled that up, you unlock the naitonal dex to get all pokemon, like in DP.

im with you on that one. tentacool and zubat are most of the reason i use repels constantly.

There's a thread for that.

That said, I don't really get the animosity for the regional dex. Admittedly, Ruby/Sapphire didn't require you to jump through any hoops to get the National Dex, either... the first "foreign" Pokemon you acquired through trading automatically activated it. Though for that, I guess you still needed a game to trade such a Pokemon over from. Fr/Lg were the biggest pains to get the regional dex, actually requiring you to catch a certain number of Pokemon before you could get it. At least in D/P/Pt, the Pokemon of trainers you encountered on your journey were chosen in a way so that by the time you got to the Elite 4, there was only 1 or 2 left to register (which the E4 had).

I'm pretty sure this game will have a regional dex, though. I don't really mind it, either way.

So we can have awesome group picture fan art.

I've never had a problem with the regional Dex concept at all, as long as they're well-constructed to give you a good selection for the main storyline - which has been the case in all but Diamond and Pearl, in my opinion.

Re: I hope there is none of this reigonal dex nonsense this time.

Holy crap. That picture is like Where's Waldo...
Anyway, I don't mind the regional dex. I don't even see what's so bad about it (but that just my opinion). It's gonna return anyway.

We have 500 Pokemon and they restrict us to ~150 in game (9 of them being starters). Why should we be restricted from using our favorites AND find the same thing on every single route.)?

Re: I hope there is none of this reigonal dex nonsense this time.

As long as the list has a decent amount of Pokemon to use (Diamond and Pearl, I'm looking at you), the regional dex shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Re: I hope there is none of this reigonal dex nonsense this time.

i don't mind the regional dex. i really liked RSE, so not having my old pokemon never really bothered me. still, the pokemon of gen 5 should be showcased before the older pokemon, which is basically the same thing that the national dex does.

Re: I hope there is none of this reigonal dex nonsense this time.

Oh jeez, we had this discussion somewhere else on the forum not too long ago. It might be in one of the combined threads.

I can't remember exactly what the opinions were, but I'm sure it was similar to the ones most of the regulars are saying: No more region dex. Especially not a region dex that is going to restrict you.

But, on the flipside, I don't think getting rid of the regional Dex would necessarily fix the problem. Game Freak has to consciously add more Pokemon to the world. Yeah, it's great if you had a National Dex right off the bat in the game, but that doesn't mean much if every route is filled with nothing but Pidgeys and Rattatas.

So they need to make the changes.

They do not need to impose an artificial limitation so that I use the new Pokemon over the old ones. It's a new Pokemon game -- Don't worry, I'M GOING TO USE THE NEW POKEMON! That's the whole point of getting a new game! But people love to mix-and-match, especially with their old favorites. And it makes more sense to have Pokemon you can catch in the game early on so a fan isn't restricted to importing older Pokemon for a different experience.

Unfortunately, there's this knee-jerk reaction to anything new in the franchise. Anything new is met with disdain and many people are more then willing to stick with what they know. They just aren't as adventurous.

Anyway, I for one actually like the idea of the regional dex because it reflects just how ecology works in real life. There's no naturally-occuring place on earth that has every species existing on it at the same time. For example, Polar Bears aren't found with Pengiuns even though they inhabit similar enviroments. Every region has a number of species native to it while species from other regions are exotic.

So for the sake of this kind of "realism", we get a regional dex. But it's not like you're somehow limited to just it. While you only have a limited number in the DS games, you're more then capable of trading non-regional Pokémon into the games just fine (unlike the GBA games). The only difference is that you don't get a Pokédex entry for it until you've beaten the Champion. Once you get the national dex, the entire roster is opened to you.

Anyway, seeing who is chosen to appear in a regional dex is pretty fun since it's a chance for overlooked Pokémon to have a chance to shine that they didn't get when they were first introduced. Murkrow and Misdreavus for instance; in GSC, they could only be found very late in the game (Murkrow could only be found in Kanto while Misdreavus could only be found inside the last area of the game) by then, you would have had a team of strong Pokémon. The trend continued in the GBA games, where they were made version exclusives of each other and can only be found in a late area. This changed with DP, they were both found early enough to make it onto people's teams (and given more powerful evolutions).

Re: I hope there is none of this reigonal dex nonsense this time.

I have a feeling they also do it so that older Pokémon that haven't had a chance to shine in past generations get used more. They haven't done nearly as good a job of that as they could have in the past, but the fact that they gave a bunch of overlooked Pokémon new evolutions last generation, and threw some other Pokémon into the Sinnoh Dex that had been rare before (Remoraid, Barboach, Houndour, etc.) shows that they're at least trying. Hopefully they'll give some other less famous Pokémon a place in Isshu's Dex - Personally, I think that forest we got a glimpse of looks like a perfect Shroomish habitat. :)

Re: I hope there is none of this reigonal dex nonsense this time.

But Houndour wasn't until GF realized they completely messed up and included only 2 fire type families (then compounded it by adding a fire using E4 guy)

PDL's reason would be fine... if you didn't find the same damn bats, jellyfish, sapient rocks and ducks in every single country (seriously, even RS's mass duplicates only added another thing to find at sea, not replace them).

I don't see how a lack of a regional dex would prevent the game from giving you under utilized pokes early (GSC handed you quite a few)

Re: I hope there is none of this reigonal dex nonsense this time.

Even if they did ditch the regional dex they'd still have to re-number all the Pokemon. There's no way they're gonna make you scroll through the first 493 entries just to get to the Pokemon that are relevant in the game you just started
