Windows Media Player doesn't support the .ogm extension. VLC can play it, but I can't seem to find a way to take a screenshot from it that shows up as anything other than black. I know in Media Player that can be fixed by turning off the hardware acceleration, but I can find no such option in VLC.

I don't know about non-Mac versions, but my copy of VLC has a "Snapshot" command on the Video menu.

(Of course, I've never had trouble taking screenshots directly from VLC, either.)

While we're on the subject, does anyone know of a free program for Windows that enables taking screenshots of DVDs?

Thank you SO much. You have no idea how long I was looking for something like that.

I use InterVideo WinDVD, but that came with my computer...well, a trial version did. I liked it, so I bought one that was a couple versions old.

BTW, I managed to find a codec or something that I thought was only for another program (Zoom Player), and now Windows Media Player will play my OGM files. Heh, problem solved.

My VLC has no screenshot function, nope. I wonder if there's an updated version? hmm...

I have the trial version of InterView WinDVD, too, but I'm too cheap to buy the full version.

MPC works for all that fun stuff ;P

Best part ist aht you don't need to install any junk either. You could burn it to CD and bring it everywhere D:

Yeah, I use MPC as well. Small, lightweight, and functional. For the record, if someone still wants to take a screenshot with Windows Media Player, you need to disable hardware acceleration manually. You can do so by going to the start menu -> "Run..." -> "dxdiag" -> Display tab ... then just disable the "DirectX Features". Just remember to re-enable it later for games and whatnot. That, or the hardware acceleration option in some Windows menu that I can't remember off the top of my head. XP Also, you can disable hardware acceleration for Winamp, from within the program itself.

You can also use avidemux to capture screenshots as well... http://avidemux.sourceforge.net I find that it better to use than MPC simply because you can get right to the specific frame that you wish to take a screenshot of. It's pretty straightforward to use, it's also an encoder as well, just in case you need to convert video to mpeg-2 to create a dvd, or if you wanted to reencode to xvid, or another mpeg-4 standard.

That's what you can do in VirtualDub, and that's what I wanted to do with the OGM file...oddly, now that I can get WMP to play OGMs and take screens from them, it won't fast-forward, rewind, or jump around in the file at all. I'm forced to play it at normal speed until I get to what I want. Quite limiting. I might try out that program, thanks.
