I need some help please

I've been on this forum for over a year and don't have an avatar.

I've finally decided to get one and I want to use this picture.

However, I need some help resizing it and blanking out the background white. Could someone please either do it for me or give me some instructions on how to do it as if you're talking to a child? (Seriously, I'm terrible at this sort of thing.)
