I really hope they keep Pochama's name.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's right that they're changing some names in Pokemon like they've been doing these past years to help it reach a wider audience, but I really think they should keep Pochama, because I don't see anything they could turn it into, and he's like the unofficial Diamond and Pearl mascot. Since PUSA keeps at least some Japanese names, I hope Pochama is one of them.

Out of the nine starters, only Chikorita's name is the same in both versions. The starters are a big marketing point so more effort is probably put into their localisation. I like Pochama too but it's a name that I can see PUSA changing.

Doubtful, only Naetle I could see staying.

Empelt, however, could maybe....

Anyway, how the heck is Pochamma the unofficial mascot? He always appears with the other two in almost every ad for DP. Munchlax is more of a DP mascot then him.

I thought Chikorita's Jap name was Chicolita. Not much of a difference, I know, but even so I'm barreling off topic as we speak.

That's just a different romanization. :P Chikorita's the official one.

I like Pochama's name. I hope they keep it, with the p for penguin thing.

...I just realized that both Pochama and Achamo have similar endings. o.o I know chamo is the sound a chicken makes or something like that. What's a chama?

And to kinda take this off-topic, some name changes makes no sense. Changing Digda to Diglett... whhhhy, exactly?

Because digda isn't as cool and clever?

'Kipedia says achamo's name is from shamo and some other word, so maybe it is just a coincidence.

To me Pochama looks and sounds weird. I prefer a punny name.

Well it doesn't really effect me considering I nickname all my pokes with their japanese names. I'm absolutely in love with the new japanese names so they'll most likely stay the same.

Hmm.... what were the old names of some of the starters?

What were some of the name changes that made you mad, or some that were really drastic?

Were there any name changes you liked?

Part of Pocchama's name origin is from the Japanese word (o)bocchama, meaning something like young gentleman or rich boy (in fact, the trainer type Rich Boy in the English games is Obocchama in the Japanese games).

According to the Bulbapedia article on it:
Pochama may be derived from 坊っちゃま botchama, meaning child, with the P perhaps coming from penguin. It may also be based on ぽちゃぽちゃ pochapocha, which means either splashing in water or having a plump appearance.

Therefore it's almost guaranteed that Pocchama will be changed in English, replacing the Japanese wordplay with some sort of English counterpart.

An example would be how Hitokage in Japanese, which came from hi (fire) and tokage (lizard), became Charmander in English (char for the fire aspect, and mander from salamander).

(Trademarked names. Please don't anyone start a debate about "correct" romanisation.)

Fushigidane (Bulbasaur)
Hitokage (Charmander)
Zenigame (Squirtle)
Chicorita (Chikorita)
Hinoarashi (Cyndaquil)
Waninoko (Totodile)
Kimori (Treecko)
Achamo (Torchic)
Mizugorou (Mudkip)

If you're talking about that picture that was floating around, I'd still like more
solid proof. However, Pochama really isn't a bad name if they keep it, I really like
the name myself.
