I spotted a 504.

This is the first time I've seen it since I returned, but I was 504'd while trying read a thread. I thought I wouldn't see it again now that the HGSS traffic more or less died down, but I did. I doubt anything needs to be done, but if I see any more, I'll be sure to post it.

On another note, has anyone else been 504'd since Team Rocket left?

A 504, as in a blank white page that says your browser could not access the site?
Uhhh. No, its just a blank page that says "504 ERROR"

I've been experiencing a series of 504 Errors too,
I gets really irritating waiting for them to go away.

It happens. There isn't really any need for discussion.

Maybe not, but it's still a matter of concern due to the fact that those and the 503s were all over the place on the release date of HGSS.

That means there is too much traffic(visitors) on the site for the servers to handle. Plus people want to edit the Wiki as well and both the forums and the wiki are all on the same servers.

Wait, so the same servers used to run BMGf also run the Wiki, and the other databases?

From what I understand yes. If Archaic sees this thread he'll mostly likely tell you how things work around here.

But yeah the 503s and 504s are because there is a lot of traffic on the forums/wiki.

There is probably a lot of traffic from all the BW hype. After all, every time a new game is announced, message boards get flooded with traffic.

Yes, and then the server is overwhelmed, and can't complete all its requests to view a page.

I've had one 504 error, but two 503 errors.

More or less, this.

We have a bunch of servers that run the site. The way they're set up is a bit technical, but I suppose I could discuss it if you really are curious. But anyway, when they have to do more than they're capable of, one of two things happens. First, they'll make things slower--your request for data gets pushed to the back of a line, so to speak. If it can't complete your request in a reasonable amount of time--which is only a few seconds, mind--it'll toss out a 504 or 503, depending on the precise situation.

That's a short-version. When we had TONS of 504's we added another server to keep up with the load. But with only a few now, it's not cost-effective to buy another server to deal with an hour or so of peak load per day that may throw a 504 or two to a user during that time.

I already know what it means, what worries me is when it tosses someone a 504 during normal peak traffic.

On another note, I ran into a bunch 503s while removing the spoilers from my signature.
