You know how boltbeam hits every pokemon for regular or super effective damage except Lanturn, Shedinja, and Magnezone? I found a combination that gets all of those three. A Dragon-type move and a Fire-type move (IE Dragon Claw/Fire Fang) will hit nearly everything, since Steel is the only type that resists Dragon, and Fire beats steel. However, Heatran is the only pokemon that is unaffected by this combo; it's part steel and has Flash Fire.

Just something I noticed. Also, boltbeam is learned by a lot more different pokemon than a dragon/fire combo, so that's why I might not see it as often.

Another thing is that Dragon/Fire cannot cover as many type combinations when it comes to super-effective hits.

So true
though Fighting/Ghost gets you neutral on everything and a few decent Super Effective hits as well, but for a mass of Super Effective with just 2 moves, I think Boltbeam can't be beat.

Yeah these are all pretty common 'coverage' combos:

Fire / Dragon / Ground

Water / Normal or Water / Dragon

Electric / Ice

Ice / Ground

Fighting / Ghost or Dark
