Gladion and Guzma were strong trainers, they same type of trainers Ash battles in previous leagues, so he fought formidable opponents. Guzma's plan was to battle Kukui eventually, so Guzma probably would have done it.

Gladion or Guzma. Gladion was shown to be a formidable, and Guzma was definitely a strong contender as well. Guzma actually DID beat Gladion in the video games, so I'd give it to Guzma.
