My question to you, dear readers, is this:

If Misty returned to, say, Generation 5, and did exactly what she did before... Which means, engage herself in a rare TR battle, enter maybe 1 or 2 water-based arcs in the series, and perhaps had a couple trainer matches or something with Ash and all, how would you feel?

If she were to have stayed throughout the past so many sagas, doing the exact things that she's pretty much done since Johto (more or less), how would you feel?

So you'd have:

Ash: Trainer/Primary
Boy: Coordinator
Misty: Trainer/Sidekick

Call this a "survey" if you will, with added discussion.

Would she replace the main girl, or would she be an addition?

If she replaced the primary girl, then the boy (or Brock, even) would take on the big role like that of a coordinator. So you'd have the same lineup, with:

Ash: Trainer/Primary
Boy: Coordinator
Misty: Trainer/Sidekick

It's pretty much, if Misty returned to fulfill the same role she did in Johto

And

If Misty were to have stayed throughout the series (meaning she'd never left), fulfilling that same role, season after season

In that case I wouldn't like it at all. The boys would get to have all the fun while Kasumi would basically be what Takeshi is now.

If Kasumi never left I have to wonder if the show would still be on. Going for that girl audience with Contests was a smart thing to do. If it had been some new boy I don't things would've worked as well.

I think it's better for Misty to have a reccuring role as a Gym Leader imo. If she retunred to do exactly as before...I mean if such a thing would happen, I'll be okay (I don't complain about the show a lot lol) but I think I prefer the Gym Leader route better.

EDIT: Rocket Girl brings up a good point too. Imo, I'd rather watch a girl coordinator than a new guy. I think it works well.

Yeah, that's a pretty bad idea. Misty was already sidelined in Johto even without a second quest going on, to see something like that would make it seem like she was even more pointless.

It really puts into perspective why that didn't happen.

I'd like her back, definitely, but I feel she would do more than, as you put it, "exactly as before."

Nonsense. That's the POINT of this thread. If she came back doing exactly as she did before, slightly more or less, but no change. In a similar fashion to Brock. That's the entire point.

well, if she did what she did before, I'd still be happy.

I'd be annoyed.
I want Misty back, badly I do. I really want her to come back.
But I'd insist she do Contests, she's so pretty, and water pokemon are perfect for contests which she specialises in, as they are beautiful.

Misty, to me, just doesn't seem to have a contest flare in her. She's not about prettying pokemon up for show.

She could be, she mellowed a lot, from that Angry red head, to that caring beautiful angel.
Azurill, Goldeen, Dewgong, Luvdisc, Corsola, would all be perfect for Contests.

Misty doing contests is one of the stupidest ideas ever. If they wanted her to do them in the first place, they would've kept her instead of bringing in someone new to do them.

If Misty returned to do pretty much nothing, then I wouldn't be too happy, to put things lightly. I like Misty, actually I think she's my favorite of the main girls, at least pre-Johto Misty, but still, having her return would be just... "blah." =/

I think they should stick with just having Misty come back in Pallet Town or whatever.

Exactly as she was? Uh, no. She'd HAVE to change to come back, outfit and all. She'd have to girl it up if she'd want to be THE main girl, not just sidekick/girl. Some sort of fanservicey outfit would need to happen and she'd have to appeal to girls with stuff like cute Pokemon, pink, and fashion. Its stereotypical sure, but that's just how it is. And she'd do the cooking and taking care of Pokemon like Brock does now but do a little Water Pokemon training on the side? Basically a housewife with a part time job? Someone would be super pissed about that.

Someone in the show has to appeal to girls with stereotypical girl things, and if she's not and she's basically Brock who battles occasionally (GASP just like he does now!) then the guy would have to be some sort of Jonas Brothers/Boy Band pretty boy type.

Lol @ Misty as a housewife.

And oh, yes, what's that they call it again? BISHOJO or BISHONEN or something. Yeah, the boy would have to be the second, like James, but worse. Lulz.

So far, everyone's pretty much confirming what I thought. There's like one person here thus far who sounds pleased.

That would be a shit idea. No Kasumi for me if this is the scenario!

And Insomnia, he'd be a bishounen ;-)

Under the condition that she needs to be just like her old role (I assume you mean besides the first ten or so episodes or in late Johto, where she actually did something), I would not be particularly thrilled, but I would not really see it as a bad thing. A trainer, a coordinator and a sideline trainer is exactly what we have now. That'd be a sidestep for the most part. I personally like Misty as a character, so that'd be a plus for me, but you couldn't say that about everyone, especially the people who never knew of her. It could also be good to break out of the rut Brock has been put in, but we can't guarantee that they wouldn't put Misty into a rut of her own, so my final answer would be, "I'd be happy to see Misty back, but it would have neither a positive nor negative effect on the show."

I can't BEGIN to say how stupid an idea it would be to change Misty just for a full time return. You wonder why so many people like her? Well, compared to May and Dawn she is UNIQUE and already DOES appeal to girls as is. And for the earlier comment about whether the show would still be running or not if Misty was still on the main cast I would say YES and not only that the show would most likely be doing better than it is now. The reason why its ratings dropped off so quickly, even more so than previous years was because of a few things and one of which being the main cast revamp and others being the fact that the R/S games in general were a real disappointment to many and also the fact that Pokemon was weaker because of the fad chasers jumping ship. I would make her more active in things since unlike Brock her goal is more action oriented and would work well in the show. Also a complaint I am hearing against May and Dawn is that their interactions with Ash and Brock are poor compared to Misty's and that is actually very important in making filler episodes tolerable, even more so than throwing in random battle after random battle after random battle. That's one reason why the Orange Islands worked so well even though it was a filler, because of the interactions among the main cast along with battles. Although I would not mind at all if Misty came back unchanged I would try to make her more active in the show without forcing her to do contests. I think its about time we got a break from that and it would do more good than harm since for some it would be something new and different.

There's extreme bias in that post, I don't even know where to start. The fad would have died even without Misty, get over that.

Kanto/OI Misty was great for her time, when the show was just trying to appeal to boys and boys only. Now that girls are also being targeted, she'd have to be stereotypically girly to fit that roll of appealing to girls, that's just how it is.
