If this were an in-game option, would you use it?

I like having battles that are fair on both ends, even if the opponent is a.i. That's why I play on "set" battle style: I shouldn't be able to switch for type advantage when my opponent is switching.

Anyway, it's always bothered me that I win a lot of my battles because I have more pokemon than my opponent, especially gym leaders. I would like to see an option that says "Match Number of Pokemon". If I have more Pokemon than my opponent, I have to select which ones I will battle with, and if my opponent has more, I can't battle with him/her or he/she must leave some out.

What do you think, is this an option you would switch "on"?

Maybe, but I dont know that I would need to, since I usually only need a few Pokemon to beat a gym leader and sometimes am able to solo them with only one Pokemon, so even if it were to exist, I wouldnt use it.

A potential downside would be during the E4 when you might need your full team as backups to win. It would suck if you were limited then.

Interesting concept! I've recently been trying to match Gym Leaders in terms of team number when I challenge each one, so this would be convenient for that. I wouldn't have to box half my team just to fight Jasmine or whoever. I don't think I'd have it on for most battles though, because it would just get really tedious seeing as most trainers only seem to have one or two Pokemon.

I think I just like in the anime when a gym leader says "let's have a 2 on 2 battle". But in the game is 2 on 6... I didn't win because my pokemon were better, I just had more than the other trainer. I would keep this option for every trainer battle.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I just feel like if I have to pick a couple Pokemon to fight with every single time, I would get very tired of it after a while. I guess that's why it's an "option" though, and not forced! :D

I would probably use it to make things interesting and to improve my skills. However, battling the E4 would be hard doing that, so I wouldn't chance it. This same concept can go into leveling as well when you think about it.

I just bring a certain number of Pokemon to a Gym, or only limit myself to using certain Pokemon in a match. This option wouldn't mean much to me, really.

It does seem a shame that you don't see Gym Leaders toting 4 Pokemon in their team these days like they did back in G1/2/3/4.

However, for random NPC trainers I don't think it's necessary (except perhaps for rematch battles).

I don't think that should be an option, I just think gym leaders should have larger, maybe full teams anyway. They're supposed to be masters of their type, so it makes no sense for them to have just two or three pokemon, and not even two or three of the best. I think the game should have a much longer build-up before the first gym, to give you time to put together a party and get to know them, and stuff, and then the gym leader should be a proper distinct challenge from the rest of the trainers, not because they have one strong pokemon and another normal one, because they have a large team. I think every gym leader should have at least four pokemon. Also, the elite four should go back to having teams of five, or maybe just have full teams, which would seem more appropriate. Just my opinion, anyway.

^ Indeed.

Instead of giving us the option to match the amount of Pokemon, Game Freak should instead increase how many Pokemon your opponents have in general, especially when it comes to Gym Leaders and the E4. Fighting Gym Leaders with only a maximum team of 3 just feels lame, and the same goes for the E4's current apparent cap of 4.

I think they should have an option to have the sorts of matches where each sends out a Pokemon and after one loses both trainers have to send out a new Pokemon. I think that'd be cool to have if only as a side thing.

That would be cool. And battles like the League matches in the Manga, where whoever has a Pokemon faint first, loses. I can't help but think that Red must have been cheating...

That would be interesting, but I think the option should only be for Gym Leaders, E4, and other major trainers like your rival for instance. (Seriously Calem/Serena, it took you until postgame to get a full team? Really now?)

I also wonder if the option to scale trainers to your level would add more challenge, what with EXP share and all.

I personally probably wouldn't use it, but I think that it would be a great addition as another sort of 'challenge mode'!

I think that would be a cool concept or option. Ever since Diamond and Pearl, I've always matched the gym leaders amount of Pokemon with the Pokemon I challenged with to be fair. So having the option to choose rather than dropping them off in the Pokemon Center every time would be nice.

I think I'll try that Set option though. Battles with no switches seems fair and reasonable. At least in certain battles. Because with switching, that allows you to train certain Pokemon as well besides just getting a possible type advantage.

I'm still surprised they didn't go up to 6 per team on Elite 4 this time (after you beat them the first time, I mean). They could have given everyone a mega to use (Wikstrom and Siebold had them potentially).

Wikstrom could have had: Klefki, Propobass, Scizor, Aegislash, Steelix, Skarmory
Malva could have had: Pyroar, Talonflame, Torkoal, Chandelure, Magmortar, Houndoom
Siebold could have had: Clawitzer, Starmie, Barbacle, Gyrados, Milotic, Sharpedo
Drasna could have had: Dragalge, Altaria, Noivern, Druddigon, Dragonite, Garchomp

I probably wouldn't. I raise six guys for a reason, the gym leader's fault for using so little.

It's a nice option to have and potentially great challenge for veteran players. The only potential problem I could see with this is this scenario: An AI trainer with one Pokémon accidentally spots you and then challenges you to battle. Are you given the option of choosing the Pokémon to fight trainer before the battle begins, or are you going with the first Pokémon in your slot that just happens to be weak to the enemy Pokémon and be stuck with it?

Well I'm doing a Nuzlocke right now and have learned not to risk my pokes. It seems like an interesting idea but I wouldn't use it.

I think a gradual increase of teams for gym leaders would be nice during the original playthrough, then you'd be able to re-challenge the entire league all over again, with all of them having 6 Pokémon each.

Gyms 1 & 2: 1 Pokémon
Gyms 3 & 4: 2 Pokémon
Gyms 5 & 6: 3 Pokémon
Gyms 7 & 8: 4 Pokémon
E4: 5 Pokémon
Champion: 6 Pokémon
