If you could go in the past, what would you change in the Pokémon series?

For me...
I would have made Leafeon in Gen 1 and make it Evolve with the leaf stone. I would have made Flareon and Leafeon 1 focused in sun and Jolteon and Vaporeon focused in rain. Design wise, I would have made it look like the same Leafeon we know except with a collar of leaves.
I would have made Dragon Eeveelution by Gen III, and Glaceon and Rock type Eeveelution as the duo for Gen IV, each one based on hail and sandstorm. I like Eeveelutions.
EDIT: I would have also made evolutions for Pokémon who need one desperately... And baby Kangaskhan would be a normal Poké.
What would you do?

Physical/Special split and Day/Night cycle in gen III.

And make Steven rematch able in Emerald.

Also, make the Pokemon E4 improve in levels after you beat them.

Luckily ORAS fixed all those and more.

What I would change:
  • Fixed the levels and other things in HGSS
  • Included Moss Rock and other 4th gen evolution methods in HGSS
  • Gym leaders are rematch at any time instead of specific time and register phone numbers at any time.
  • Include Battle Frontier in , Desert Underpass, Mirage Tower, Faraway Island, Birth Island, and Navel Rock in ORAS.
  • Change the climax of story in ORAS - Primal Groudon/Kyogre is uncatchable in story because it is in primal state.
  • Altered Delta Episode - get Rayquaza to stop the fighting of Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre. The opposite mascot appears in ORAS. Deoxys would be at Birth Island instead.
  • Gym leader rematches added to ORAS
  • Lugia and Ho-oh are at Navel Rock instead.
  • Event item to take you to faraway island where Mew is added.
  • Wally rematch at victory road without requiring to beat super rank at Battle Maison which will be replaced by Battle Frontier.
  • Secret Base trainer uses 6 pokemon instead of 3.
  • Milotic and Flygon are given mega evolutions.
  • Marine Cave and Terra Cave are in game where you catch Groudon and Kyogre in normal forms.
  • Southern Island can be visit at any time even if there is nothing there (just for fun).
  • Juan is gym leader while Wallace is Champion.
  • Steven can fought many times at Meteor Falls after Delta Episode.

-Have moves be categorized Physical and Special from the very beginning (or at least as early as the technology allows)
-Special Attack and Special Defense be separate stats from the get-go
-Have the Dark, Steel and Fairy-types have been in the game from the get-go, with current type-matchups
-A Dark-type gym leader
-Make the Johto gyms easier
-Change Red and Blue to have an event where you break Mewtwo out of Team Rocket's lab (similar to how he was created in the Anime), have Mew be a post-game encounter at the Pokémon Mansion that requires Mewtwo in your party, and then be able to catch Genesect in Cerulean Cave (no seriously)
-Make it so trade evolutions (such as Kadabra -> Alakazam) can also be obtained by level-up to a rather high level (such as Lv. 50), with the option to trade them to evolve them earlier
-Completely replace Emboar with an alternative Fire-starter with a more interesting typing (or retool Emboar to have another typing instead)
-Give Delibird, Farfetch'd, Luvdisc, and Spinda evolutions
-On the subject of Farfetch'd, make the one you get in a trade in RB just have a regular name instead of "DUX"
-Give Dawn a more sensible outfit
-Make every single improvement in ORAS (better contests, better villains, better water navigation, etc.) have always been in the originals
-Make the Regis more intuitive to get, or much more rewarding for the effort needed to get at them
-And finally, see to it that Pokémon Battle Revolution never got made

The main thing I would like changed is that Water types don't all get Ice-type attacks. It kinds of defeat the fact that Grass is the only type to have a complete type advantage over Water-types (it's the only type that resists it and hit them super-effectively).

Another thing I would change is to add two more resistances to the Ice-type, probably a Flying resistance and an Electric resistance.

For a devious change, I would like to suggest Defog stay a HM in HeartGold and SoulSilver. I will let you think about why it's a devious change, unless you want to know.

Thanks for reading.

To begin with, I would do away with the pairing of games and everything related to that - some Pokemon only available in one game but not the other, trade evolutions, etc. - because they have never been about "Trading and battling with your friends" as claimed and always about selling more units.
Either remove HMs completely and replace them with items (axe, sledgehammer, surfboard, etc.) or make them more useful by changing their typing and/or base power.
Do away with event-only legendaries and make them obtainable by doing something in-game.
Make training less tedious by having endless trainer and Gym rematches.

I would make sure the Gen 1 games were completed and properly tested before their release - Ghost being super effective against Psychic as planned, the initially intended amount of Pokemon available (iirc, about 200) and remove all the bugs and glitches caused by the lead programmer putting Mew in at the last minute.

Add secondary types to a great deal of Pokemon or change them, eg. -
Gyarados gets Dragon instead of Flying
Luxio or more likely, Luxray gets Dark
Electivire and Magmortar gets Fighting
Gothitelle gets Dark
Reuniclus gets Ghost

Having Bill proudly say from Generation 1: "Hey, I developed a new system called the 'Auto-Sort!' Press LR at the same time (or whatever) to open the menu and select how you want your mons to line up in your boxes automatically. Neat, huh?"

Fix that stupid thing in Diamond/Pearl/Platinum where the game has to take longer to save whenever you altered the PC box.

Sadly, even if I could travel back in time (and try not to risk erasing "Tangled" from existence), I've no idea how to fix that.

-Overhaul the Pokemon distribution in G/S/C
-Add more Ghost and Dragon type moves in Gen 1 and not make the Psychic type so powerful
-Make the VS. Seeker a staple
-Make Diamond and Pearl faster.
-Add Gen 3 events, Gym Leader rematches, and Emerald Battle Frontier in OR/AS

That is unfairly incorrect. You should make more research about Mew. It was not put in the last minute.

Yes it was - Iwata Asks - Pokémon HeartGold Version & SoulSilver Version

Here's the relevant part if you don't want to read the whole interview -

This is my favourite thing about gen I! I would add in more bugs! Running around glitch city was such a great experience for me, I wrote about it in a school assessment. Discovering bugs, whether on purpose or not, was such an amazing thing for me because it reinforced the exploration aspect of the game, and made me feel like I was setting foot where nobody else ever had. However, I wouldn't put more glitches in gen III and beyond, because they were more fleshed out and gave that feeling all on their own. Gen I and II were pretty bare bones in comparison to today's games, and kinda needed that extra kick. Just goes to show how different the strokes can be for different folks!

I'd also add the ability to choose, at the start of the game, between a regular and hard mode. I would also add in the ability to skip tutorials but if they really wanted to keep them, they could just put it in the regular mode. I also think one or two more move slots would be cool, but I'm not sure how well that would work out in real life. And I'd also add in hints of a romantic interest a la BW 2 because why not? As of gen III I would have added more fleshed out plots and characters, also like gen V. Also character customization would have been awesome, too. And worldwide distribution of events! I think events are fun when everyone gets access to most of them - I can understand if some of them are influenced by the region or local culture. Living in Australia, we didn't get anything close to regular distributions until very recently and I'm sure my neighbours in New Zealand agree. Last but not least, I would have established they night/day split in gen I and put it back into gen III.

Edited to add a couple more things

Confusion and trade evolutions would have never existed, gym leaders would be more important to the plot, and there would be items instead of HMs (the HM moves would still exist, however). Surf becomes a jet ski, Cut an axe... really, I can only see Strength and Fly staying the way they are.

-Add in more trainer customization options.
-Make Zubats cuter by making their necks more obvious and less fat, not to mention let them smile more often, much like this cutie I drew. :3

-Relabel the "Pokemon Ranger" trainer class. We already have the other kind of Rangersssssssss
-Give Kadabra a different design and Japanese name to avoid the Uri Geller situation.

All I can think of ATM. :p

Oh my goodness, that! All of that!

I would just keep the design but change the name. I would say get rid of the spoon, but that would imply that Geller has a copyright on spoons and, I mean, c'mon... I've seen numerous cartoons where spoon bending was a thing.

As for my personal changes, I would nix the Field egg group and just have seperate egg groups like Canine, Feline, Rodent... it's such a mess of an egg group and has created numerous images in my head that I wish would go away. Also, I would nerf dragons and make them as common as any other type.

Slightly off topic, but Pokemon Bank could really benefit from this.

If I could change something about past generations, I would want every Pokemon to have a two or three stage evolutionary line from the start... Baby Pokemon are interesting in the method of how they are obtained, but some of them don't make a lot of sense. (You have to have a Pokemon hold an Incense to obtain a Baby Pokemon, and if you don't, the Egg will hatch in a more mature stage?)

When I was younger, my favourite part about training a team was watching them level up and evolve. As a result, I rarely, if ever, put single stage Pokemon on my team. it always seemed to make those Pokemon seem more boring and somehow less strong than they actually were, and it seemed unfair on them.

Change Fairy type into Light type instead. It has the same advantages but is weak against Psychic, Poison and Steel. Resists Dragon, Bug and Fighting. Immune to Dark. Resisted by Fire, Poison and Steel.
