I made this thread before, but a memcache error made me lose it, so I'll start it again.

If you were told by GameFreak you had to create a pokemon game for the current handheld nintendo console, what would you do?

You have to use regions already shown and use max 2 regions. Can use any of the 493 pokemon in the game and any of the items in any game to date and so on.

For me I'd have game where you visit both Johto and Hoenn. You start in Johto and go through it as normal, collecting badges and so on. You have two PCs for storing pokemon "Johto" and "Hoenn" and when you finish Johto, Professor Elm says that he was in touch with Birch and said about how good your getting and that he wanted you to go to Hoenn and try the Hoenn league. You'll have item storage too

When you travel to Hoenn, your pokedex will become Hoenn dex and your Johto PC and pokemon will be locked until you complete Hoenn. All your party will be put in your PC and you'll receive a Hoenn starter. YOu can go back to Johto and your pokemon in PC will be unlocked but Hoenn pokemon will be locked. This will stop you using powerful pokemon and defeating Gyms easily.

When you get national dex, your pcs will be unlocked and all pokemon will be available.

National Park in Johto will be Pal Park and you'll be able to find Ho-oH roaming from Johto to Hoenn and back, so it will be hard to find and catch, but after your first encounter and beating Johto, you can track it in pokedex.

Hoenn will be like Emerald Hoenn, but with Raquqaza, Kyogre, Groudon and Regis available and there will be a way to catch Jirachi on this game and Celebi too and All roaming dogs.

Some Sinnoh pokemon will be available like Starly, Budew, Burmy/Wormadam in Hoenn and Johto.

Pokeradar will be available from Elm after defeating Hoenn E4 and going home. And Gym leaders pokemon will all be EV trained with Battle tower stats so they are tougher to beat. Team Rocket will be in Hoenn too now, they will be trying to obtain Rayquaza while Aqua/Magma want Kyogre/Groudon and you have to battle them a few times.

Upgrade Hoenn contests so they are more like Sinnoh ones, but only make them better. The graphics will be like Platinum graphics and sprites only slightly better.

Also for catching a certain amount of pokemon in the national dex, you can obtain other Johto/Hoenn starters you did not get. The GTS system will be in Lilycove maybe or Hoenn somewhere.

Also after you obtain national dex (seeing about 250+ pokemon and beating Hoenn E4) you will be able to go to Alto Mare and catch both Latias and Latios.

So what would you do in a game if you could make a main pokemon game?

I must be missing something here. This is the anime thread, and yet the very topic title says "game". This needs to be moved.

whoops, could someone move the thread then? Neer realised I put it on anime

I'd make a game where you got to be a member of team rocket. It would be set in Kanto, 12 years in the past, and would explore stuff like who founded team rocket, and how giovanni became boss. The starter types you could choose from would be Dark, psychic, or fighting type. You could choose a poochyena, drowzee, or makuhita, and your rival would be an annoying good guy with the starter that's srong vs. yours. Your goal at first would be to perform missions for the first boss, who is a tad incompetent (Let's call him Bob for now.) Later, you join Giovanni, who wants you to help him overthrow Bob. Then, your missions would focus on getting people on Bob's side to join you, and stealing a legendary pokemon you previously stole for bob. The game would end in an epic showdown, with you and Giovanni vs. Bob and your rival (who decided to join team rocket.) the game would have pokemon drawn in the style of the second gen pokemon games. It would be much darker than the other pokemon games, like shadow the hedgehog and the sonic games.

I would make a game where you can customize your character in minor ways, such as gender, skin color, hair color, hair style (only a few options), and general age (10, 14, 18, 30, 60, perhaps. There would be more options in the younger ages because that's where more players will be.) There will be a preset rival for each age, made to match the player's. Dialogue would change based on age, as would the story behind why you're starting Pokémon long after turning 10, if applicable, but the general story would be the same.

The two versions would each have the player a part of a faction that is a rival to the other. The character's rival, naturally, will be a part of the opposing faction. Though competitive, neither group is evil, and they're not out to hurt each other, but instead just prove themselves better. This would allow for minor conflict to be concentrated here, allowing the evil team of the game to be more evil. And they actually would be evil, not just ambitious and amoral/immoral. The story would also vary slightly from game to game because of this, not unlike in Ruby and Sapphire.

There would also be difficulty options, where you can choose at what difficulty you want to play the game. They would be Normal, Hard, and Extreme or something like that; Normal would be what older games were; Hard would be a more reasonable challenge for an RPG, and Extreme would take some pages out of Fire Emblem's book. If trying to select anything but normal, the professor or whoever is doing the introduction would ask you if it's your first time playing Pokémon, and if you say it is, (s)he will warn you about the difficulty, and let you decide if you want it for sure. If you chose Extreme, (s)he'll warn you either way. If playing on Hard or Extreme, all Pokémon will give the same amount of experience as they would have if they were in Easy, so you can't raise them faster by playing through on a higher difficulty. After completing the game (main bonus quests included), you get the option to change the difficulty at any time, possibly for a cost. In addition, the experience damper on Hard and Extreme that served to avoid punishing players for playing through on Easy goes away. Obviously, multiplayer battles are made fair, regardless of difficulty, and the level 50 option makes all Pokémon level 50, even if they're lower than 50.

Money would also actually be worth something, and there would be next to no one-time-only content, including many useful items like Max Elixirs. Perhaps useful and previously rare items could be sold for ridiculous prices(200,000 for a PP-Up, 500,000 for a PP-Max, etc.) yet sell at a normal price. Naturally, the Master Ball (outside of lottery and such) and legendary encounters would still be one-chance-only.

There would be more species richness in places where Pokémon can be found. While one route might be dominated by Shinx and Starly, there could still be the rare chance of finding a Pidgey, or a Sentret, a Hoppip, or even a Drifloon. Basically, each route should have dozens of possible Pokémon, even though most of the time you'll see the same few. You'd be more excited about random encounters in a cave if you knew you might find a Skarmory among the Gravelers and Zubats.

There would also be opponents going all the way up to level 100, as bonus content or as rematches. You shouldn't have to level from 99 to 100 by KO'ing a level 65 Pokémon.

AI, naturally would be improved a little bit. It's not bad, but it should do what is the obvious choice if the trainer in question is talented. Newbie Bug Catchers will tell their Caterpie to String Shot your Munchlax sometimes, but don't expect an Elite Four to do anything but the most deadly attack available, or use their non-damage moves for anything other than strategic purposes. Wild Pokémon would have slight AI differences as well. A Kadabra will make smarter choices than a Bidoof.

Lastly, the battles would not be 3D, but they would be more animated. Physical moves will make contact, sprites will do more than just slide around and glow, but will stick to basic animation to make sure the game fits the cartridge.

I'd say that if I couldn't create my own regions and pokemon and whatnot, then forget it.

I would set my game in Johto and Kanto, because I'm a complete Johto freak, but I'd be emphasizing different areas of gameplay.

First, as another poster mentioned, I would want to improve the computer's responses. (Note: I'm not a programmer, so I don't know how much of this is actually possible.) In the beginning of the game, it's logical for random trainers you find out on low level routes to not know their Pokemon type effectiveness charts, or the best uses of moves. But there's no excuse for this not being so with the Gym Leaders and the Elite. For example, in FRLG, it makes no sense for Lorelei's Slowbro to use Yawn five times in a row... especially if he were facing an Exeggutor which he could quickly dispatch with Ice Beam. Heighten the difficulty of the game by smartening up whatever programming chooses the move; make the characters respond like a human would, to type effectiveness etc.

Another thing I'd like to improve is the Gym Leaders' and Elites' rosters. I know it makes it easier to go into a battle knowing exactly what you'll face, but I surely can't be the only one who would rather these major in-game battles be more difficult. Instead of a set team, I'd prefer to have a pool of Pokemon for each Leader/Elite. X number of Pokemon could be drawn out of that pool at random. Now, for Leaders/Elites that specialize in a less common type (Morty and Agatha immediately spring to mind) there would of course be a number of duplicate Pokemon, for example five Haunters in the pool. But each Haunter would have a different moveset. Harder? Yes. More like a "real" (ie metagame) battle? Yes. More fun? I think so.

Speaking of movesets? OHKO moves are cheap. Cull them from the game.

One of the things that has always interested me (and the reason that I would have my game set on the Johto/Kanto continent) is the mythology. Hoenn and Sinnoh have a very definite mythology in that their legends are connected, and their Legendaries somewhat pantheonic. Johto was getting there, but not quite, and it seems to me that with Kanto and Johto being so geographically close they should share aspects of their mythologies. (In fact, if you count the anime, it seems they do: the legend of Lugia is inextricably connected to the legends of the Birds.) Not all quests have to deal with the Legendaries, and in fact I'd rather they didn't, but I'm interested in world-building and so would like to see the links between the legends of Kanto and Johto better connected. For instance, what about the mythology of Mew? She is a minor component of the game, true, but given the amount of information presented about Mewtwo, it would seem that Mewtwo's "mother" (and, genetically, the mother of all Pokemon) should have a bit of a cameo too.

Plot-wise, I would start the game off in Kanto, and it would progress roughly as normal. Collecting the three Legendary Birds and beating the Elite would open the gates to Johto; you would report to Oak with the Birds' information in your Pokedex and have him evaluate your Pokedex progress. At that point, he would say something like, "My colleague Professor Elm would be very interested to see this. You see, he has been studying a Legendary Pokemon of Johto who is said to be connected to Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. ...Perhaps you would like to tell him about these three Legendary Birds?" At that point the player would gain access to Johto (passing through Mt. Silver first.)

While in Johto the player would progress through up-leveled gyms (with Falkner starting at, say, level 50) but because of the reduced training possibilities in Johto, gym levels would only go up to 75. I feel that there is sufficient room for player growth here and that you wouldn't be incredibly overleveled when you got 'round to Clair, simply because of the difference in experience required to level a Pokemon from 50 to 75 when compared to, say, 5 to 30. This would also allow for easier incorporation of Johto Pokemon into an existing team.

The legend of the Unown would be expanded on (as briefly done so in Crystal) as would the legends of the Burnt and Tin Towers. With Ecruteak being touted as the city of history, a library would be added with stories about Houou, Lugia, and the three Beasts. (Eusine could cameo here.) Depending on the game version, because I recognize that mythology geeks are not exactly a target audience and I would have to do something to bring money to Nintendo ;) , access to Houou or Lugia would vary.

If you played one version (say you call it Pokemon Phoenix, although that's a ridiculous name that has nothing to do with metals or gemstones) Houou would be the ultimate Legendary who would be accessed last in the game once a sequence of tasks were accomplished. First, Lugia would have to be caught by accessing the Whirl Islands with Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres all in the party. He would not be fought here, however, leaving the player with plenty of room for their HM slave and whatever other Pokemon they wanted to bring with them. Once disturbed, Lugia would fly from his nest in the Whirl Islands to Ecruteak City, seeking to recover his perch above the Brass Tower. Of course, since that's burned down, he has nowhere to roost. The player would climb to the charred rooftop of the Brass Tower (such as it remains) and use the move Fly to access the sky. At that point, Lugia would attack and could be captured. At that point, the game would seem to shake and provide the text "It sounds as if a great door has been opened nearby!" (similar to unlocking the Regis in RSE.) That would be the Legendary Beasts being loosed. They would still be runners; however, since it makes sense for one Beast to know where the other ones are, capturing one would attract the other two, making it easier to nab all three in a timely manner. Once all three were captured, the Tin Tower would be accessible and Houou could be captured at level 70.

In the other version, say we call it for verisimilitude Pokemon Halcyon, the events would be reversed. After beating the Elite Four a second time (this time the Johto Elite, on account of Lorelei having gone off to Four Island and Karin and Will existing) the player would return to the Brass Tower. This time, s/he would be able to release the Legendary Beasts and allow them to roam Johto, running around and being annoying until one of them is caught. That would permit access to Houou on top of the Tin Tower. After capturing Houou Lugia could be caught using the Legendary Birds as triggers in the same way as the other version.

Other things I'd like to include for the fun of it: Blackthorn City being made more awesome with the history of the Dragon Clan; Lance having a brief cameo in the Dragon's Den (he is just leaving as you arrive; he tells you he's been training up and he hopes to have a good battle with you sometime soon); an explanation for why, exactly, the Elite roster has changed (perhaps coming from someone in the Indigo Pokemon Center); Red up-leveled, still in Mt. Silver.

Pokemon Wifi Gen IV. Runs in a modified Jhoto a Shinoh. Plug Card into another that plugs into DS. Uses normal team, all 493, Works as an MMO. Better ideas later.

As a lover of sim games, I'd probably make a Pokemon game that simulated the job of a Breeder. It would be a gameplay mix of The Sims (where you have to watch the needs/wants of both your character and the Pokemon he's looking after) and Harvest Moon (where you do menial jobs in a fun way, and also interact with the locals and woo the girls, heheh).

I don't have much details to put in at the moment, but you guys get the idea...

Now that I think about it... I wonder if that would look good done in RPG Maker? Hmm...

I would make it where you play 2 people, one for contests and one for battles
I would also set it in Orre (but with wild pokemon) and you catch your first pokemon with a master ball that your parents give you. Your partner has a pokemon already (chosen randomly out of all pre-evolved pokemon) so you can wait to use your master ball

To be honest, if I could make a main handheld game tapered to my liking and not sales, and without adding anything new, I'd probably just make a Red/Green re-remake that played into Heart Gold/Soul Silver. Like Dragon Quest 1/2, or Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls.

The Time Machine could trade between files in either game(i.e. If you finish Red, you can import from it into your Gold save)

I'd also have miscellaneous cosmetic changes, such as a "continuation" mode where you can play as your first game character through Gold/Silver like Ash seems to do repeatedly(Leave your Pokèmon with Bill, then play through G/S with Red/Leaf, or you could start R/G playing Gold/(Crystal/Soul)) Of course, you can still go back and pull your Pokèmon forward with you after some point too. Another idea might be to have a secret means of starting the original games with Pikachu or something.

i agree with sleet.
but i would allow the character to interact with people more like you can make them like you by having proper conversations. like you have options to chose from. E.G. Hello, Goodbye, How Are You?....
it would make it better.

And the elite 4 + champ keep growing levels every time you defeat them and once your champ, once in a while a challenger arrives at pokemon league and you have to fight him eventually. To get to him you take a lift or something to avoid elite 4

Would you have to follow the previous format of the pokemon games?

Because for me, I would have Kanto and Johto, except with Kanto first. Instead of gym leaders being based off of type, it would be based off of battle styles (ex. Attack, Defense, Stat-boosting, Accuracy, etc.). There would be a Team Rocket plot involving them using Mewtwo to capture other legendaries or something like that. I dunno, I was never a good plot guy. After you beat Giovanni in his gym, he would flee to Johto, and you would have to spend Johto beating the remnants of Team Rocket. When you finally go to the Elite 4 after beating the Kanto and Johto gym leaders, you would find that Giovanni was the champion.

I dunno, my ideas probably suck.
