I always like it when gaming sites talk about the Pokemon anime, IGN recently did an article about the banned eps of Pokemon. Some funny stuff, they even talk about the edited Meowth boss fantasy from the recent Cheryl eps in DP.

For the most parts, I'm kinda glad that they banned these episodes. Meowth's Boss Fantasy seemed more awkward than funny. It doesn't mention that Barboach/Whiscash episode, though, but I guess it wasn't as interesting as the others. I mostly stick with the dub, but I did watch the original version of "Legend of Dratini" in YouTube, and it was quite funny at some points. Still, I can see why they didn't air it, although it confused me to no end when I was a kid(They didn't even visit the Safari Zone? When did Ash get all those Tauros?)

I see someone who doesn't like Jessie and James. Anyway, cute little article for educating people. Needs some more spelling and grammar checking, though.

Ehhhh....I Don't Watch freakin POKEMONNNN anymore it's freakin GaY alreadaYYY!!! ahahhahaaha anywayz i only watch it becuz there nothing freakin anything good on anymore besides i watch KNIGHT RIDER and TERMINATOR:SaRaH CoNNoR ChoRoNiCaLs ahahhahaa
I love the internet. <3

I don't understand how someone couldn't like TR... the tickle machine plot was one of their best!

But the stupidity of the comments was probably the best part of the article.

I think the comments took my IQ down 15 points, than again some of those comments are from folks who wish that Pokemon would be more "Dark and Violent". About the article the Barborach episode isn't even mentioned in there and it did'nt even air.

I read it that comment, I was like, so. Silly people, he probably lost anyways.

Not too many people know that except for fansites. Since it was never officially released in Japan and as well known to the wide public, not too many people would knew that little mishap. I didn't find out about the Barborach episode up to the last year only.

Why on earth should Pokémon be "darker" and "more violent"? But that's a whole other issue.

I've seen worse comments, though. I have read too many reviews and YouTube comments that claim that the anime came before the games, so I'm used to the stupidity of others...

Apart from the Barboach ep and those mentioned in the article, were there any other banned episodes? Can't think of any right now... I think one AG episodes was banned in Germany or somewhere...

I kinda found out about the episode existing around september of this year. The episode was probably a small filler episode anyway from the preview i saw on youtube.

The episode is "The Bicker the Better" though i do not know the contries that banned it though.

Why did that episode get banned?

I think the Battle of the Sexes theme, might have something to do with it. Some countries found it a touchy subject I guess.

Sorry for postwhoring, I just love talking about banned episodes. :)

I didn't bother to read the comments, but I thought overall it was a nice article. I'm glad he included video from all the episodes even if he got the summery of the honey scene wrong.

were there any other banned episodes?

Not really "banned" but there are the two recap episodes (one in AG and one in DP) and if to count not just regular episodes there are some of the ANA shorts, that "Slowking's day" thing and maybe some other things...

Haha, I never knew about that boss fantasy. That arc used to be my most hated arc I can remember, but I think that scene is hilarious enough to excuse it.

Also I really wish they would have just edited the other banned episodes like they did with Beauty and the Beach if they were unwilling to show them as are.

With some creative editing there's no reason they couldn't have aired the Dratini ep. I mean come on, all they'd have to do is say it shoots lasers or something, like on the Superman cartoon that aired on the same network at the same time. Granted, this'd have been before 4Kids had the budget to make it *look* like a laser gun, but still, dialogue edits should have been able to suffice.

No, dialogue edits would not have sufficed because we had a man pointing a realistic gun at children. It doesn't matter if 4Kids is able to come up with a convincing cover-up story; to your average viewer, flipping through the channels, they'll see an old man pointing his pistol at a ten-year old's head.

It's kind of like how Inu-Yasha was rejected for Toonami (and forced to go to Adult Swim):

Sean Akins: I mean, with Inuyasha was kept off of Toonami because of the first episode, where he's impaled to the tree with the arrow. And on Toonami at the time, you couldn't impale people to trees. And if I go "No, he's a demon dog monster from another dimension," they're like "It looks like a guy, it's a guy impaled to a tree."

Toon Zone: Well, he does have long flowing white hair.

Sean Akins: I tried that one too. "He's got dog ears as well, wearing a strange crazy outfit." They're like "he's a guy impaled on a tree." And you can't do that on Toonami, and that's what got it on Adult Swim. "The whole thing's fantastic, it's a fairy tale, blah blah blah." Sorry, but the lawyers don't look at it like that. If you press play on the VCR and it's a guy impaled on a tree, it's a guy impaled on a tree. They don't want to hear any backstory. So, that's kind of what lead that to happen.

You should also know that the kind of parents who complain about these things never take anything into context.

Besides, those laser guns you cited weren't being used against children, IIRC. These kind of things make all the difference to the censors.

Anyway, I can't access IGN at work, so I won't be able to read the article until I get home :(

I guess they just view costumed superheroes with an adult around differently from a bunch of small town kids being shot at by a crazy old man.

And on a side note...did TNBA ever say how old their Robin was? I'm thinking twelve-ish, but I don't know if it was ever actually stated.

I figured something like that.

By the way, just to be clear...I'm not actually advocating the line of thinking that says that guns have no place in kids' cartoons. I'm merely trying to demonstrate the various issues the censors *may* have had with the episode and how getting the episode suitable for a TV-Y rating wouldn't have been as simple as a few snips here and a few dialogue edits there.

Oh, I know, but I'm saying that compared to other shows running on the same network in the same childrens block, it would have fit in just fine.

Besides, who knows what guns in that world could shoot? Rio had what's apparently the spittin' image of a massively powerful Cold War-era assault rifle, but it shot nets. Granted, Rio wouldn't show up for something like six more years, but still.
