I'm starting to think Beedrill is not a bee

With real bees now coming into the game with Diamond and Pearl my thoughts about Beedrill being a hornet and not a bee seem to be closer to the truth than before.

What are your opinions on this?

I think it's been obvious since the beginning that the name Beedrill was a horrible decision.

But not as bad as changing Digda to Diglett.

And Sandshrew. And Mr. Mime.

Basically, species basis should not be judged solely on name. Not too mention many Pokemon borrow characteristics from many types of related species.

I never thought he was a bee. He seemed more like a wasp to me.

But there are plenty of Pokemon based on similar or identical concepts. Especially after Gen III. Does that mean that Butterfree isn't a butterfly because Beautifly was introduced? Or that Venomoth ain't a moth because of Dustox?

Butterfree's a Monarch and Beautifly is a Swallow Tail (hence the "tails" on the wings). Venomoth and Dustox are two different varieties of moths (can't think of the species).

Beedrill just hasn't looked bee like to me. It has a hornet like head and a hornet like body. So I would think it was a Hornet or wasp more than a bee.

I believe that beedrill was based mostly on bees as well as wasps and hornets but focusing more so on the aspects of stinging and venom rather than honey making.

That is it, in my opinion.

Where'd you get monarch from butterfree? I really doubt that that is the idea. Dustox and Venomoth are both based on moths in general. Pokemon aren't all based on different species. We got two cats. Doesn't mean they are based on different species, just different aspects of the same.

To me it also seems that analysing the body is a bit overdoing it, as the body seems to be just a generic insect body.

I have always seen it as a bee. But you people make very good points...what is Beedrill classified as?

I never thought Beedrill was a bee. It's obviously a wasp or a hornet. I started calling every male Beedrill I had "Waspinator" after I got Crystal. =P
