Image Policy

This has gone on for long enough! We need to implement an image use policy about what images should be head images and such. There have been too many problems because some users think that "[they] know better than everyone else about what images to use." There have been countless edit wars because someone didn't like the image that was used on Ash's Charizard, Bugsy's Scyther, etc... and there are now so many problems because people "didn't like" the head images on episode pages. Because they only switched the image half-assed and didn't bother doing all the other work involved, the episode pages and the episode list don't have the same image and hundreds of images have the wrong category on the archives. We need to create a policy and it needs to happen soon.

Possible courses of action:
a. Remove image-revert privilleges from normal users.
b. Remove image uploading privilleges from normal users.
c. Block the troublesome users.

But I don't really see any policy-based solution to deciding which image is better...

Then maybe we should make one? The only question is what you would include in such a policy...

I was thinking that the policy would state that they need to ask permission from a sysop in order to change the image. I think this is also somewhat what Pie would think... based on her quote: "...Neither you nor the other user has the final say on which screenshot is best used as the displayed screenshot of an episode - we, the sysops, do." So, the sysop would have to approve of the image switch in order for it actually being done.

There's no real way of enforcing that though. Unless we restrict uploading, people could just change the image links on Bulbapedia to whatever they just uploaded.

We could codify the particular nature of the image used as a thumbnail, or at least, list criteria it must have. It would limit dispute if phrased properly.

Possible courses of action:
b. Remove image uploading privilleges from normal users.

No thanks on that one. Everyone would be asking admins to upload images for them. It would be a pain for everyone.
