Okay, restrictions on images are getting ridiculous now. If it's not PNG, users like Sketch automatically label it as bad even though the picture is of perfect quality.

This is stupid. The picture should be labeled bad ONLY if the quality is below average. ex: low pixel count, logos, static, bad scans, etc...

Also some users are being threatened to be banned from the archives for uploading JPG images, in which their only flaw is being in JPG. Right now, it is preferred, not required, and we shouldn't be threatening banishment to users who are just trying to find pictures to add to the articles. What if they don't know how to turn the pictures into PNG? If we hate JPGs so much, we should make it so users are unable to upload them and make PNG the only available format for still images.

Most of the images are thumb nailed anyway. It's impossible to tell the difference between a high quality JPG and a PNG unless you zoom in on it.

Maxim did bring up something on Seymour's page. "Bulbapedia is being really bitchy about images", and I couldn't agree with him more. Bad images should only be the ones listed in my examples, not JPGs.

1. Policy states PNGs.

2. The blocking from the archives warning comes from asking said user several times to use PNG. Everytime she comes to someone with an image we said PNG and she neither responded or listened. Therefore the warning is justified. If she would have just responded in the first place with "I don't know how" then that would be different. But no, she doesn't respond at all.

3. Yeah, and the image that you were so sure had the correct colors so you took my tag off was not only not correct like said it was, but it was full of artifacts. So, like I said in my edit summary for replacing DP80's image: I know what I'm doing. So back off.

And just so everyone can see that I was correct about this image: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/User_talk:Kenji-girl#Tyler

That is a lie.

Nowhere within easy access of the upload page does it say, "PNGs" only.

In fact, let's show what the immediate upload page say.

The preferred formats are JPEG for photographic images, PNG for diagrams, sprites, icons and other simpler images, and Ogg Vorbis for sounds.

Avoid GIFs for complex images as it has a limited colorspace.
Let's break that apart.

A screenshot is generally considered a "photographic image" by immediate viewers, and nowhere on the list of "thing that should be PNG" does it say anything relative to a captured image. PNG says "diagrams", which these aren't, "sprites", which a captured image is not, "icons", which aren't far from sprits and still aren't captured images, and "simpler images", which captured images, compared to the cards we got being uploaded, are no simpler than them in the minds of an uploader. They won't consider a capture a "simple image".

Continuing. To the linked "image use policy" on the front page, which describes what should be done to the image.

Images should have a descriptive but concise file name.
Image summary pages should contain source information.
Images must be tagged appropriately.
Images should be used on a Bulbagarden project.
Images should be relevant.

Not a word of captured images needing to be JPGs. But yet it tells you what the file name should be, so you're technically trying to get to people before they upload with something like "AG0089".

There is no clearly stated policy where everyone can see it and read it, and all the accusations that is up to this point should be null and void because as far as all the offenders could see, you guys were pulling it out of thin air.

Then where did the PNG come from? It had to have been somewhere for most of the admins to enforce it.

Even so, that still doesn't make up the fact that the person who brought it up can't notice a bad image from a good image in the first place.

That's not really it. It's not so much that they're doing it in the first place and more that they continue to do it repeatedly after being told to stop. Even if that in and of itself isn't a block-worthy offense, ignoring bureaucrats is.

Augh. The policy is not pngs only period, it's if you're gonna make an image the header for an episode, that image must be png so that we can keep track of them all.

This is all in the name of making it so that we don't have random kids showing up and changing images just for the sake of changing them, so that they're integrated into the template. AG025's image will be AG025.png, and thus we can protect that image so that someone has to ask permission to change it.

In addition to what TTE said, we also want quality. png.s are much higher quality than jpgs and gifs. Also, most other websites carry jpgs for anime screenshots. By enforcing pngs, we are attempting to stop users from stealing from those sites like Pokémon Nightmares and Pokezam, because if they aren't allowed to upload jpgs, they can't upload the images from those sites. It's all an attempt to stop theif from those sites, and also make it more consistant with naming head images. Do you now see why we enforce it?

Let me tell you a story. There is a certain user, who will remain nameless, that was trying to get images for every CotD that didn't have one. That was all fine and dandy until we found out that he was stealing from Pokemon Nightmares. They may have asked for permission from them after stealing about 70 images, but they were still stealing from the start. Now, Pokemon Nightmares thinks that they can steal our bandwidth because of how we are using their images. This is a major problem. By enforcing the need of only having pngs, we are preventing these probems like users stealing from other sites, as well as other sites stealing from us. If we can prevent these problems just by prohibiting the uploading of anything but pngs, then that is a fantastic idea that will be great in the long run. Quality just happens to be a side effect of this. By making users get the images themselves, we no longer have to worry about thievery and stealing, which will prevent problems with our site as well as others.

You enforce a rule no one knows about except by your say-so. The keyword to your post is "want". It is not policy; it's your preference. Because what TTE is saying isn't jiving with the so-called policy you guys are enforcing. PNGs for episode headers is all I'm hearing.

As for the so-called theft, some of us don't steal our images. You shouldn't slap us all on the wrist for what a few may do. Innocent before proven guilty.

Now I'm all for my images being replaced /if/ the quality is better and it's nearly the same, identical shot and roughly the same size as what I upload. What I'm not for is being told I should submit something that jumbo-sizes file-size for something that is only better by the slimmest margin (as in, if no one looks to hard, no one will notice) and it's considered a warning. That's not cool.

When I uploaded some full N64 screenshots, I did so as JPEGs and not PNGs. The reason? PNG versions were four times the filesize. Taking the screenshots (which were PNG originally) and converting them to JPEGs really decreased the filesize with no discernable change in quality. Literally having both in image viewers and going back and forth, I could notice no difference save that the JPG had a slightly darker shade of yellow. (The shots do have noticeable artifacts, but those were in the original image as well.)

This is also why you shouldn’t post PNG screenshots in desktop threads unless your wallpaper is composed of mostly solid colors.

Okay, I'm now officially lost. I really don't know what to post, as far as pictures go.

It seems that there is a revamp of the episode lists. BUT THE IMAGES SHOULD STAY THE SAME WHILE CONVERTING THEM TO .PNG, there shouldn't be new images. The images should stay the same as the previous .jpg images.

You're saying we take the original jpg and convert it to png? That just increases the file size and keeps the horrible quality.
