Improved fainting animation?

Do you think that the animation of a Pokemon fainting will be more elaborate than it is in Generation four? Personally, I think the current animation (the pokemon sinking into the ground) is pretty boring, and it would add a little bit of excitement into the battle if they did stuff while they were fainting. In the same vein, perhaps Pokemon could do something, like move or recoil a little bit, when hit by a damaging attack.

We've already seen battle videos where the pokemon faints, and pretty much the same thing happens as before, They sink into the ground. So no changes from what we've seen so far.

Sadly, yes. I never got why they fall out of the screen. It really doesn't make sense. It would have been kind of cool to be able to catch pokemon when they are fainted in this game, or maybe just certain pokemon like strong legendaries, but it's a little hard to throw a pokeball at something if it just fell out of the bottom of your ds screen.

I never understood why you couldn't. Was it a programming limitation, or a design decision?

The pokemon fall down or pass out or fall asleep in Colloseum and XD is that what your talking about

Its a kids game. It might freak them out if they saw their precious monsters fall face-first onto the ground as if they just died :bheart:

Exactly! You know, they could just flash a different sprite of the pokemon in a "fainted" position to make the battles more dynamic. Although I agree that it's unlikely to ever be implemented, it would be awesome.

Although it would be cool, GameFreak's already making moving sprites for 500-600 Pokemon sprites probably consisting of 3 sprites each animation. Also factor in the new move animations, and all the other new graphical changes, I don't think GameFreak will have the time to make yet another 500-something sprites of a Pokemon collapsing.

No offense, but everytime I see one of these threads mentioning something to do with a new set of sprites, it just seems impractical. With the number of Pokemon increasing every generation, it's going to be harder to do so many sprites for each and every one of them (each one having a somewhat original pose to differentiate themselves from previous generations). The only solution to this would be to make the game full-on 3D and that won't happen on the handheld platform for a while.

The 3ds is out though, so they could do Handheld 3d. After all, if gen VI or VII was in 2d, it might get bashed by reviewers AND gamers.

Also, it isn't that hard to implement animated fainting animations. They are in Stadium, Colo, XD, and PBR.

Only thing that would be a issue is the ratings. In the EU, pokemon is rated 3+. It would get a 7+ like PBR if they changed it.

it does take a while, but that's their job. people are hired to make sprites for the games. that's what they do. they've got plenty of time to make sprites. someone who works at burger king starts working at 8:00 am and goes home at 2:00 pm. they work, they do their job, and then they get time off on the weekend. that's what spriters do. they work and they get their time off, just like someone who works at burger king. that's how they pay the bills and such... they sprite.

There is nothing to improve or fix or even add. It's fine as it is. A Pokemon fails in battle so it needs a flashy way to waste time. lol no.

Well, I don't know if you mean 'pop-out' 3D, but what I meant was just 3D onscreen. Or, you meant that and I'm just confused.

~ Can you have 'pop-out 3D' 2D sprites?

That's true, but then GameFreak would either have to take longer to make the games or hire more spriters. Each generation has taken a little bit longer to make, but they still average at around 3-4 years. It's not unthinkable, though, with the rapid growth of technology and art programs.

Never really cared to watch a pokemon faint after Ive beaten it. It would be good for game effects but no big need for it.

Except... that kids can watch Pokemon faint in the anime or play Stadium/Colosseum/XD/Battle Revolution and watch Pokemon faint in 3-D.

Besides that, the text already says they fainted...

Back in Gen I, it made sense, because the Pokémon didn't move at all, so I interpreted the sinking "animation" (if that could be called an animation) to represent the Pokémon falling down to the ground (like in the console games), just done in the same unanimated style of the time; but now that we have true animations it just doesn't make sense and looks pretty bad. But considering what we already got in animation advances, I think I should be thankful.

When someone mentioned 'catching a fainted Pokemon'. I think there are two reasons why that won't be in the games.

1) Catching Pokemon is way too easy that way. It's not challenge.
2) You'll want that feature removed when you get asked if you want to catch the Pokemon for every Bidoof that you defeat.

Njaah, I'm not too interested to see any improvement for fainting animation. The "sinking animation" works nicely and is a quick way out of a battle. More complex animations are always some what slower and that's not good really. I hated fainting animations in Colosseum and XD, since those really slowed down already a boring game. However in PBR fainting animations were much more enjoyable, since it didn't slow down ingame playing and in more tense WiFi battle fainting animations worked better. Seriously I'm not interested to see Bidoof's fainting animation again and again and again.

But they did that in Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2.

He meant the trainer coming out and catching (in their hands) their fainted pokemon. Like you would catch a friend if they were fainting. (Only on T.V.)

No, he meant catching as in capturing, since he mentioned throwing Poke Balls at it in the same post. But I agree that there's no reason they shouldn't make fainting animations from a design standpoint. It's just that from a development standpoint, that's a hell of a lot of manpower. Hopefully they'll switch to 3D model-based battle screens when they move up to games on 3DS; the current hardware isn't powerful enough to have models substantially better than Stadium-era graphics, but the 3DS looks pretty powerful at graphics.
