I want to try leveling a Fire type in Emerald during a playthrough. I chose Mudkip for convenience, so no fiery chickens.

Any suggestions? I've never really leveled a Fire type during a playthrough that wasn't a starter.

Your options are limited, Slugma, Numel, Torkoal, Vulpix; I think Vulpix would be the best option but it is not available until you reach Mt. Pyre (if I recall correctly), in any case you may want to buy a Flamethrower TM for it or stick with its level-up moves, when you make sure it has learned all the moves it is recommended to use a Fire Stone to evolve it (and improve its stats, there is a fire stone somewhere between Mauville and Farlarbor), being a Generation III game I would suggest to train him with a bunch of Spindas to give it a good amount of extra SP.ATK.

Yep, Torkoal is a good option as well, it would be a Fire Tank in that case...

The fire stone is in Firey Path, I think it's called.

Right, I couldn't recall the location's name right then, in any case you can get it or find a red shard underwater too.

BTW, I just finished Emerald with a Torkoal in my team, it didn't have much S.ATK, but a huge DEF and decent ATK, it truly served as a tank, sadly my Aggron looked like a filler...

But he can learn fire moves, and he does.
If he wants to clear the Elite 4 the first time he won't be able to get Groudon anyway, besides, even if Groudon's stats are high enough, I think it is better to give it Fire Blast/Overheat as a side move, he gets no STAB and is more physical (being GEN III it is better for it to get Earthquake for STAB and more physical moves.)

I'm a Ninetales fan myself, but it depends. Do you want a tank or a sweeper?

He can tradeXD

Obviously, but sice he is asking for some advice on Fire pokemon for Emerald I assume he is going for the available pokemon in his game, otherwise he would ask for other fire pokemon, but then, if he hasn't cleared the Elite 4 he is still limited to Hoenn fire pokemon.

I don't hate Macargo, I just don't like it too much, but it is very useful for hatching eggs.
