What's up Readers? Time for my third Fan Fic. I know I haven't finished either of my others, but I blame my ADD. I wanted to wait awhile before posting, but I think I'll let the prologue fester a bit before I start posting chapters. Also, I know how horrible the title is. I hadn't named it when I decided to post, so that's all I could come up with on short notice. (Feel free to offer suggestions for a change).

This will be a sort of twist on the classic story of Red. Now don't get me wrong, I'm generally on the opposing side of using canon characters as main characters (especially protagonists), but this isn't the typical story.

As mentioned above, this story will follow Red. "Unoriginal!" they cried. They were wrong! (I hope) This is a totally different take on how his journey played out. Let's just say that at one point in the story, he will take the road not chosen in the game.

Ok, so I'm not going to tell you what this choice is for fear of spoiling anything, so feel free to speculate at chapters are released. I believe you find out the twist around Chapter 5 or 6, so you don't have to wait long.

WARNING- MUST READ THIS- The prologue is kinda bad. As is the first chapter. Not badly written (I hope) just kinda boring. It pretty much starts out just as all other Journey fics do, the prologue is set the day before Prof. Whoever gives you a pokemon, and Chapter one shows the main character getting the pokemon. This being said, I will probably post the prologue today, Chapter 1 tomorrow, and then Chapter 2 the next day. After that I'll let the chapters sit awhile before posting new ones.
Note: Feel free to criticize the first two entries for grammar, structure, etc,but don't criticise my lack of originality for the beginning. It is MEANT to be unoriginal, and that is noted. Wait until Chapter 2 onward to bash my storyline :ksmile: Here goes...

~Prologue~

Red’s house, the day before Prof. Oak gives out pokemon and trainer’s licenses…

Red sat on his bed with an upturned alarm clock in his lap, fiddling with it. He set the alarm for 6:00 AM, tomorrow he would be receiving his first pokemon.

He had turned 15 a little less than a month ago which made him eligible to receive a pokemon from his regional professor, Oak, and a pokemon trainer’s license. With these tools, he would be allowed to journey across his home region of Kanto, challenging countless other trainers and gym leaders, and maybe even the Elite Four.

A poster was plastered onto one side of his wall which showed the faces of the Elite Four of Kanto; Bruno, Lorelei, Agatha, and Lance. There is also a Champion of the Elite Four, but the Champion changes so often that it would be pointless to have only one person listed.

The boy was trying to decide which pokemon he would pick. Professor Oak generally offered one of three very rare pokemon to new trainers; Squirtle the water type, Charmander the fire type, or Bulbasaur the grass type.

Professor Oak was an old man now. He had become confused in his older years, but still remained in his old ways. They said he was a genius, and I guess he was, but by the time Red received his pokemon he had become a shell of the man he once was. Every year he would give out pokemon to new, excited trainers, though he wouldn’t remember a thing about them, not even their names.

Hopefully this year he would remember a bit better. His grandson, Blue, had also turned 15 earlier in the year so he would be receiving a pokemon as well.

Red despised Blue. Whenever Red had achieved anything, Blue would not only do the same, but with more success and in much more impressive form. He was a talent in everything he did, Red knew this, but Red still made it his mission to best him in any way he could. Red saw that pokemon could be a chance to be better than Blue at something. They would both be beginners, so Red could take the opportunity to quickly get better than Blue and then leave him in the dust.

It was getting somewhat late in the evening, so Red thought it would be best to go to bed. He knew it would be terrible to wake up late on the day he received his pokemon, so he slipped under the covers. Red eventually got to sleep, even though his excitement was uncontainable.

Lol. Told you. (good things to come...)

Re: Rise To Power (Title Pending)

I like it. This story could be awesome or terrible though, because of, as you said, how clichéd Red is. If you make it original though, it'll be awesome! However, keep in mind that I can't give a full review based on the prologue. I'll definitely be looking on this story and I can't wait till the first chapter!

Re: Rise To Power (Title Pending)

Yeah, Red is definintely different. I'm a bit embarassed about this prologue, and chapter 1 might be a little better, but Chapter 2 is where things sort of take off a bit. Then once again in Chapter 5 or 6 the story REALLY takes off. Expect Ch.1 to drop sometime tonight.

Re: Rise To Power (Title Pending)

He takes the road not chosen...I have a feeling I know what that means, but I'll hold my silence. Nice air of mystery.

Re: Rise To Power (Title Pending)

Hehe, be my guest. I would love some discussion and speculation in here :)

Re: Rise To Power (Title Pending)

No, I'm doing it so that I won't ruin the read...
When's the first chapter coming?

Chapter 1: Love and War

Ok, here's Chapter 1 everbody! It's quite a long chapter (5 pages in MS Word I think), as most of the early ones are. I wanted to have as few chapters as possible in the early part of the story so 1-6 are all fairly long. Not a lot happens in this story. Red get's a pokemon, there are a couple of short battles, yada yada, etc etc. Basically just more set-up.

Anywho, here we go...

Chapter 1- Love and War

Red’s house, the morning he is to receive his pokemon…

The alarm rang at 6 AM sharp, but Red was already dressed and ready to go. His mother was cooking breakfast in the kitchen when he left his room. Red ran down the stairs, extremely excited.

“Morning honey, ready for some eggs?” his mother asked. She sniffed a little and wiped her eyes.

“Mom, you don’t need to cry. I won’t even be leaving Kanto!” Red said, trying to console his mother.

“I know, it’s just that you’re leaving. I’ll be the only one here.”

“Professor Oak is just across the street, Mom. Whenever you start getting bored or lonely just go over there, he would probably love a visit.” Red said.

His mother wiped her eyes once more and composed herself, “You’re right. I’ll be fine, Red. I guess you can go on a journey, I shouldn’t stop you, but you have to make me one promise.”

“What’s that?” asked Red.

“As soon as you can, you have to visit me.” She said.

“Of course I will! You don’t have to tell me that…” he was a little embarassed.

“Ok, ok. You should eat your breakfast and then head over to the professor’s lab.”

Red ate his breakfast quickly, much too quickly, and jogged over to Prof. Oak’s lab. He knocked on the door and heard a voice from inside tell him to come on in. The familiar voice was that of Prof. Oak. Red opened the door and entered. He saw several of Oak’s assistants busily working at various computer screens and tables, and the professor was at the far end of the room sitting at a desk.

“Ah, hello Red! How are you this morning?” The professor stood up and walked around the table. He welcomed Red with a firm handshake. “We should be able to begin shortly.”

They chatted for awhile and Red grew anxious. He had no clue why he wasn’t already half way to Viridian by now, what was Oak waiting around for? His questions were soon answered. Blue, Oak’s grandson, burst into the room carrying his massive swagger in with him. He walked over to where they were standing.

“’Sup Gramps? What’s this loser doing here?” he asked. Red was used to this abuse and thought little of it.

Oak apparently took no notice of this either and said, “Ok boys, are you ready to pick your first pokemon?”

“Why not? I’ve got nothing better to do.” Said Blue, treating this milestone as if it were nothing. Blue walked over to the table and reached for one of three pokeballs sitting on Oak’s table.

The professor put his arm in front of Blue, blocking his attempt to take the ball.”Hold on Blue, it will be your turn shortly. Red, would you pick your pokemon? There are three to choose from; Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur.” He said, pointing at each respective capsule.

Red had still not made his mind up. He thought of each pokemon, what they looked like, what type they were, and what they evolved into. He finally looked at the professor and said, “I think I’ll take the Charmander.”

Oak grabbed the ball holding the fire type and handed it to Red, smiling. “A fine choice, Red. This pokemon will take much patience and dedication to raise, but in the end it will be worth it. Blue! What will you be picking?”

Red released his pokemon from its ball, revealing a small orange salamander-like creature. The pokemon looked up at him and smiled warmly. His tail blazed behind him and he had small claws on both hands. Red thought that even for a new pokemon, this one looked tough. Red noticed that Blue was now looking over at he and his pokemon.

“He took the fire type, so I’ll go with water! Gimme that Squirtle, Gramps.” Blue grabbed the ball from the table and looked at it with a funny look in his eye. With his age came a thirst for power. He had learned that people with strong pokemon held authority over others in this world. Just look at the Elite Four, even Gym Leaders! He knew now that he had a pokemon, he had power.

“Thanks professor. I guess I’ll see you when I come back through Pallet Town.” Red said. He turned to leave the room, his Charmander following behind him.

“Wait a minute. You’re not leaving just yet.” Red turned to see Blue releasing his Squirtle from its ball.”You and I are having a battle.”

“No! Not in my lab you aren’t!” shouted Oak. By now, the assistants had stopped their work and were watching the young boys.

“Quiet down, Gramps. Squirtle, Tackle it!” cried Blue. His small pokemon obeyed and rocketed toward Red’s Charmander. The fire type who was extremely quick on his feet dodged and leapt above Squirtle.

“Nice one Charmander, use Scratch!” said Red. His pokemon ran at his foe and dug his claws deep into it. Squirtle winced in pain and fell back. Squirtle seemed hurt, but was soon back on its feet.

“Tackle! Hit this time!” Blue commanded. His Squirtle ran at Charmander a second time, this time making full contact. Charmander was sent backwards by the blow and hit the back wall. Several books fell onto him, but he emerged and charged at Squirtle.

“Scratch it Charmander!” cried Red. His pokemon’s claw began to glow white and he slashed across Squirtle’s face with it. The tiny pokemon cried out in pain, it had received a critical hit. Squirtle fell down and tried to get back up but couldn’t. Blue’s pokemon lay on the floor of the lab, defeated.

“Way to go Charmander!” said Red. His pokemon ran over to him and hugged his leg.

“Wow. How lucky can you get? Ok, you can expect a rematch soon, Red. No way I’m taking that again.” Blue left the building in a rage. The door slammed behind him, causing a few more books to fall from a shelf.

Oak looked around at the now messy lab. “Look what you boys have done to the place!” he called two assistants over to clean up the mess left over from the battle. “No, it isn’t fair to say you both did it. You didn’t even want to battle, did you Red?”

Secretly, he had. Red said nothing though; he didn’t want to have to clean this mess up.

“Anyway, congratulations on your first victory. I would love to chat awhile, but I have a mess to clean up and you have an adventure to start! Good luck, Red!” Professor Oak said.

Red said his goodbyes, and apologized once more for the mess he had helped make. He looked down at Charmander, so proud of his new pokemon. Red decided to go back home to show his mother his new partner.

“Mom! Check this pokemon out, I just picked it at the professor’s lab!” shouted Red.

“Oh wow! A Charmander, huh? I hear those are really tough. Have you used it in a battle yet?”

“Sure did. I beat Blue all over the place.” Said Red proudly.

“Good for you honey. So what do you plan on doing today?" His mother asked.

“I was wondering the same thing. The next town over is Viridian, so I guess I’ll go there. I hear that there’s a gym there as well, so maybe I can make my first challenge!” said Red.

“Ok then. Viridian City is just a short walk from here, so you should be able to get there before nightfall. Be careful!” As she said this, Red was walking out the door, ready to start his journey.

He had thought and dreamt of this day nearly every day of his life. Red wondered as he walked towards the city what kind of pokemon he would meet on his adventure. There were nearly 500 in the world. He knew that he wouldn’t see that many, only certain species lived in Kanto just as only certain species lived in Hoenn, Sinnoh, and the nearby Johto.

Suddenly his thoughts were interrupted. He saw a small bird pecking at the ground a few feet from where he and Charmander stood. Red recognized the bird pokemon as a Pidgey. He saw several of these in Pallet Town, as they were somewhat of an urban pokemon. Though they were seen in towns sometimes, mostly they lived just outside them in small woods.

Red thought this would be a good opportunity to train with Charmander a little bit before arriving at Viridian. He edged closer to the Pidgey, trying not to startle it too much. Pidgey stopped pecking and looked up at the duo. Instead of running, as Red had anticipated, the bird turned and faced them with an angry look about him.

Red was surprised it took such a stance, and thought it was somewhat funny. He saw that the bird was being territorial, so he called his pokemon out. “Charmander, ready for action?” Charmander walked out from behind Red and nodded, staring at the Pidgey. “Alright then, use Scratch!”

The tiny bird now took an aggressive stance and got ready to dodge Charmander’s claw. The bird wasn’t fast enough, and Charmander dug his hand across the small bird’s side. The scrappy little bird pokemon was angered by this and started to wildly peck Charmander, who was now shielding himself with his arms and tail.

“Charmander, keep him off of you!” Red cried, but the bird was still delivering an onslaught of vicious pecks onto Charmander. Finally, Charmander’s mouth started to glow and he let loose a stream of fire at the bird. Pidgey was blasted back by the unexpected attack. It collapsed and fainted.

“Way to go, buddy. Looks like you learned a fire type move! That should come in handy.” Red, once again, was very proud of his pokemon. They managed their way through the rest of that route, beating a few wild Ratatta and Pidgey, and even the occasional Mankey. Red loved that his Charmander was getting stronger all the time. He could tell that he was, Charmander was becoming aware of his power and using it to the fullest.

*****

They arrived in Viridian City just before nightfall. Red thought it would be best to stop by the local pokemart to stock up on goods before setting off again. He dropped Charmander off with Nurse Joy at the pokemon center and walked across the street to the store.

When he entered he was met by a friendly man who called him over to the counter. “Hey there son, you came from Pallet Town, correct?” he asked.

“Um, yes sir. Did you need something?”

“Well, I have this package here. It’s to be delivered to Prof. Oak of Pallet Town and our delivery boy has the day off. Normally I would wait for him to get back, but the package is labeled ‘URGENT’. Would you mind taking this by his lab?”

Red was very annoyed that he had to go all the way back to Pallet Town. He wanted to tell the man that he could do it himself, or wait for his delivery boy, but Red grudgingly accepted the task. “Sure, I’ll do it.”

“Thanks son, you’re a real life saver. I wouldn’t try heading out tonight, it looks like it’s getting dark. You can probably spend the night at the pokemon center or something until morning comes. Thanks again for your help!” the man said.

Red left the store, without buying a thing, and went back to the pokemon center. Upon entering, Nurse Joy handed him his pokeball which he released Charmander from. He thanked her and then went upstairs to go to bed. Charmander curled up at his feet, and he laid the package on a table near the bed. It was just a box, no bigger than a lunch box, with no markings other than Oak’s address and the ‘urgent’ label. Red was curious as to what was inside, but he didn’t look.

Red slept well that night, the walk from town to town had worn him out. Charmander had been very sleepy as well, he had fallen asleep instantly. Red had successfully completed his first day as a real pokemon trainer, and was very excited about it. After his delivery job tomorrow, his journey could truly begin and he could fulfill his dream.

Re: In Name and Blood: Vol. 1- Ch. 1 (Previously Rise to Power)

I have 2 main problems with thi schapter.
First of all, it's rushed. It's only the first chapter and he's already in the first city. Take it easy! At this rate you'll be done in less than 20 chapters!
My second point ties in with my first. Since it's so rushed, you're not having time to detail each section enough.
Next time, take it slower, add more description, and you'll go far!

Re: In Name and Blood: Vol. 1- Ch. 1 (Previously Rise to Power)

*Sigh* I was expecting this D:

Yeah, I must agree, it's rushed. When I was writing it I was just focusing on getting onto the main plot and out of the boring stuff. The stuff that's happened so far though really isn't all that important in relation to the overall story and plot.

Also, this is just volume 1. Keep that in mind. There may be 20 episodes in this volume, but the story is far from over.

Thanks for reading and criticizing!

Chapter 2: Familiar Faces

Ok, here's Chapter 2! Enjoy :)

Chapter 2: Familiar Faces

Viridian City, around mid-morning…

Red left the pokemon center fairly early so he could check out Viridian a bit. His first stop would be the gym. As he approached it, he noticed that it was dark and abandoned looking. There was a man standing outside the front door of the gym.

“Hey, is the gym open right now?” Red asked the man, he looked homeless.

“This Gym?” he drunkenly replied.

Red just looked at the man and didn’t reply.

“Yeah, I reckon maybe this Gym’s closed now. Maybe not forever, but right now definitely. The Gym leader don’t never stay around for long, always leaving for this reason or another.” The man smelled a bit and Red had all the info he needed, so he left.

He decided that he might as well just head to Pallet Town; he had procrastinated enough already. Once again, he walked down the route with Charmander, occasionally battling the local weak pokemon. As he was walking, the package he was delivering fell out of his arms and onto the ground. He picked it up and noticed a small hole on one corner. Through the hole, Red saw a glint of metallic red and found himself being curious again.

He looked around both shoulders and decided to open the box a little more. When he got the package opened, he saw that it contained six pokeballs.

“Wow, pokeballs. Looks like Oak is doing some research. I was meaning to buy some of these.” Red thought. Then another thought occurred to him. Why bother going all the way back to Pallet Town, then all the way back to Viridian and then having to buy more balls? Oak wouldn’t miss these at all, he was a well-off man. All he had to do was place another order, maybe they got lost while being processed? How would they know?

After Red mulled over the decision in his head for awhile, he emptied the balls into his bag. Red normally didn’t do this kind of thing; he had no clue what caused this urge. He disposed of the packaging and turned back toward Viridian.

When he arrived back in town, he avoided the pokemart and instead went left, past the pokecenter. He walked until he reached the edge of town where he saw a brick path. Curious, he followed the path.

“Hey there Red! Didn’t expect to see you so soon, what a pleasure.” The sarcastic tone of Blue could be heard from nearby. Blue walked over to Red, taunting him further. “So, given up yet?”

“No. Still a douche bag?” Red replied.

“Of course! I bet you haven’t even caught a new pokemon yet. Haha I already have several; pretty much anything you could find between here and home. I wouldn’t expect you to have anything though, you’re kinda lame and all.”

“I don’t need any others. Charmander is really strong, probably even stronger than all of yours combined.” Red said.

“Wanna bet? There’s no way you could beat me twice in a row. Pfft, especially with only one pokemon on you.”

“We’ll see about that. Go Charmander!” cried Red. Charmander stepped in front of Red, awaiting a challenge.

“Haha, that runt doesn’t look any stronger since the last time I saw it. Come out Pidgey!” Blue released a Pidgey just like the one Charmander had so soundly defeated the previous day. “Use Tackle!”

Pidgey bolted towards Charmander as a blur. Blue’s Pidgey was obviously stronger and faster than the wild ones around here. The small bird hit Charmander, but didn’t do a lot of damage because of its size.

Red smiled. Blue didn’t think that Charmander was any stronger, but he had no idea that he had a new powerful move. “Use Ember, Charmander!” The fire type blasted Pidgey with flames. The little bird flew around crazily trying to extinguish himself. “Now, use Scratch while it’s putting out the fire!”

Pidgey glanced up just in time to see Charmander charging at him with its claw raised. He raked his glowing claw across the Pidgey and sent him to the ground. When the bird fell, a cloud of dust surrounded it. The two boys both waited anxiously to see what was under all of it. When it finally cleared, they saw a small bird lying on the ground, fainted.

“Nice job Charmander.” Red told his partner, patting him on the head.

“What?! Totally unfair. Come out Squirtle!” Blue sent out his strongest pokemon to face Red and Charmander. Squirtle had lost any friendly qualities he had had in Professor Oak’s lab, now he looked angry and mean. “Use Water Gun!” Squirtle’s mouth filled with water, and he emptied it onto the fire type.

Charmander looked pained, and Red said, “Charmander, you can’t use Ember on this one. You’ve gotta rely on your speed if you want to win this battle. Be quick and use Scratch!” Charmander, who had superior speed, rushed at Squirtle and scratched him hard. Squirtle had gotten stronger so the attack hadn’t phased him much.

Blue saw an opportunity to attack. “Use Bubble while he’s close!” Squirtle began to emit bubbles from his mouth, aiming them at Charmander.

Red noticed how slow the bubbles were moving and commanded his Charmander to do something a little unorthodox. “Charmander, use Ember on those Bubbles to make steam!” The fire hit the bubbles in midair and did just what Red had wanted. The air was filled with steam which couldn’t be seen through.

Squirtle was looking around helplessly, as was Blue. “Charmander, break through the steam and use Scratch again!” Squirtle was looking scared, and he had good reason to. Charmander came out of the steamy air and was upon him before he realized it. Charmander slashed at the Squirtle’s face with his claws; both of them. He slashed and slashed the turtle until finally he fainted.

By then the steam was all gone and you could see the victorious and glowing Charmander and the blackened, defeated Squirtle. Once more, Red had secured victory over his rival. Red was overjoyed in the fact that he was actually better than Blue at something, he had always been second best in the past.

Blue screamed with disappointment. “Red! Mark my words, you will never beat me again. I’m making it my goal to destroy you next time. You’re gonna want to pack up and go back home to Pallet Town when I’m done with you. Oh by the way, there’s no need in going any further than this up the road. The pokemon league is up there and you’ve gotta have badges to get in, and I doubt you ever even get a badge.”

With that, Blue stormed off towards Viridian again and was out of sight before Red knew it. Red patted Charmander on the head and told him he was proud again. Even thought they had won again, Red knew that no trainer could be great without several pokemon. He decided that he would try to catch a new pokemon in Viridian Forest tomorrow.

Re: In Name and Blood: Vol. 1- Ch. 2

OK, first of all, I'm really sorry I didn't post here earlier. I was so busy for a few days, and when I got back here it wasn't among the newer fics anymore, so I didn't see it. Really sorry.
As for the battle, well-written! Charmander does seem a bit...overpowered. I mean, it is possible to take out 3 of Blue's pokemon considering Red is only focusing on one, but it's just something to be aware of. You've slowed down a bit, which I like. The battle was very ingenious. I quite enjoyed this chapter and I can't wait till the next one!]

EDIT: Oh, and by the way...I think I know what's happening.
The whole In name and blood title--Red's his name and the same in blood. When you said he'd choose the other path, I think it meant that he'd no longer be he noble hero we all know.

Re: In Name and Blood: Vol. 1- Ch. 2

Very right about that Magnus and thanks for the nice things ;)
The question remains, what will be the reason he isn't a noble hero? ~think about that~ lol
Expect Chapter 3: A Fateful Encounter to be up tomorrow sometime.

EDIT: Forgot to mention something. Don't expect a TON of battling in this fic. There will be some (I just wrote an entire chapter made up of only a battle actually), but a lot of the time you either hear about a battle happening or the narrator just tells you a brief overview of the battle. I mostly wanted to focus on the actual storytelling on this one. NOTE: All important battles (rival battles, gyms, etc) are kept in full detail.

Sorry, but I'll probably only be able to get a review up Friday. Don't worry, I'll still read it.
And as for the spoiler, great. Now you're making me think my head off.Now where did my head go? lol.
Either way, remember that a fic doesn't HAVE to have battling to make it a good fic. I mean, you should have the importtant battles, but like you said, it in't a huge thing.
Oh, and I think that either Giovinni will turn him, or he'll start to steal little things, like the Poke Balls, and try to reason them out, but eventually he'll become a real crook.

Re: In Name and Blood: Vol. 1- Ch. 2

Hehehehe this is fun. You'll find out in a few chapters :p This chapter is really interesting to me, it's the first one where Red encounters a recurring character in this fic. Kudos to you if you can guess who this "mysterious character" is.

Actually, I got ready to post and Word is being weird, so I'll post tonight I guess :/ sorry guys.

No prob. By the way, I think it's either
Lance or Giovinni.

Re: In Name and Blood: Vol. 1- Ch. 2

SOrry for the double post, but when will we get a new chapter?

Re: In Name and Blood: Vol. 1- Ch. 2

Hopefully soon, my laptop is busted so I'm having to post from my iPhone.. I haven't forgotten this fic!!

Re: In Name and Blood: Vol. 1- Ch. 2

Phew! Since before the post said that you would post "tomorrow" but then nothing happened, so I was afraid this fic had fallen through.

Re: In Name and Blood: Vol. 1- Ch. 2

Yeah I plan on sticking with this fic, I think it has potential. I have about 13 chapters written and the story is getting interesting so I'm looking forward tovseeing what people think :)

Re: In Name and Blood: Vol. 1- Ch. 2

UPDATE: Yes, everyone, this fic is still alive. It's been a long time since I've posted, I know, but I will start posting again soon (hopefully ><). The laptop all my fic is on died, and the charger is busted, so I'm waiting on a new one. As I said earlier, I have a lot written. Also, I've had...I guess it would be the opposite of writer's block lately, so I have a lot planned out for the next few chapters. Wish me luck on getting the laptop fixed :) (crosses fingers)
