Aside from the rapid pixel silouettes in the games and the ever popular glowing of the anime, in a real world how would Pokemon evolve and would it not be painful.

Their cells would be altercating at a extreme pace. Think about us with growing pains we face as a child and put even the incredible Hulk in mind. In live adaptations when Bruce Banner turns he seems to be going through some pain, my guess is that evolution would be something like that.

Nonetheless, Pokemon are tough creatures and they can get over it in no time but after 11 years in love with the franchise, this has just now dawned on me.

Well, the real world variation is painful. And adding to the whole body composition changing near-instantaneously thing, I would guess it would be painful, yes.

wonder if its painful for starfish to regrow missing legs, it would probably like that. Instant transformation would be probably painful, it happens so fast, why would it not be

But do pokemon experience pain like we do? If they do, many of the attacks they use on eachother would really hurt them and make them feel pain

Well, like in the Animorphs, turning into something else should hurt, but they may have some numbing effect that affects when they evolve.

Well, probably not considering what I know about evolution.
But I'm not sure.
I should probably read that "Origins of Species" book I got.

Well, mentioned in the series several times, Pokemon do get tired right after evolution, so, if not feeling pain, they would at least be worn out from experiencing such a change.

That makes sense. Rapid growth or change of any kind would create a metabolic strain. I don't think it has to be painful, though. If it's a natural part of their growth, it's possible that something in their bodies would dull the pain; i.e., naturally-released painkillers, or a temporary deadening of certain nerves. Illogical from a biological standpoint, yes, but this is a fictional world.

I guess it would maybe it will be like a guy turning into a werewolf at the full moon

yea....that would be painful.........having a large tree andd spikes grow out of u would be very painful, right?

a large volcane coming out of ur back would be more painful

and last,......eevee's ._.

It most likely won't be painful, but either way there is a big asterisk at the end of the answer because it hasn't been tested in reality, but regardless in what a person may think because of American comic books, I think there would be a bigger chance for it to not be painful only because their bodies are designed for that kind of transformation.

I guess one can argue that giving birth is painful, but that is less of a transformation.

That's probably why forced evolution like in the Lake of Rage was something that was concerning since the Magikarp's body were'nt ready to handle the stress (well that and a lake of gyarados could be dangerous to Mahogany town)

Pokemon evolution is nothing like what Darwin describes as evolution. Pokemon evolution is more like the metamorphoses of a butterfly, except instead of being in a cocoon, the change is rapid, happening in a matter of seconds.

Real evolution takes many generations to happen, and the offspring of said evolved species do not revert back to its old forms.

I don't think it would be very painful because Evolving is like growing up, But it happens so quickly. So it would not be painful.
You never see the Pokemon going to Pokemoncenters after.

Yeah I know that. That why I said I'm not sure since instantaneous evolution has never been recorded in reality.

Really though, if you think about it, it would probably vary from Pokemon to Pokemon.

Also worth considering is that it apparently does no damage to reduce a Pokémon to red light and store it in a little ball that itself becomes smaller upon being stored away.
