Emerald confuses me. It stars the same characters but obviously takes place after R/S. How much longer afterward? Is it sort of an alternate story? It has to take place after R/S since Wallace is the champion.....

Also, G/S/C take place 3 years after R/B/Y. How much longer after that do R/S take place? Or is it not stated?

Emerald is an alternative version of R/S.

R/S/E apparently takes place at the same time as R/B/Y.

Woah Fabu; proof please? We don't know that D/P come after R/S/E.... all we know is that D/P come at the same time as Johto.

Paperfairy,you answered your own questioned

The D/P games take places a while after the events in Johto(contemporary or after)so its 3 years before the original games and R/S/E

With the report on TV at the start about the Red Gyarados in the lake of rage, the events of D/P have to take place some time along the G/S/C timeline, not after.

Emerald is an alternative version of R/S.
Kind of... and kind of not. The kind of not part comes from Wallace mentioning that he did in fact used to be the Sootopolis Gym Leader, which he was in R/S. The whole twist on the teams' plot, on the other hand, does strongly suggest that it is an alternative storyline.

Well, he was the Sootopolis Gym Leader before R/S, too. It's just that he never stopped being such, as he had in Emerald.

you have the game or you know?

The info's all over. There's a report on the telly and you and your rival go to the lake nearby to see if you can spot anything cool, where you get your starter...or something.

Another point in favor of Ru/Sa/Em being concurrent with FR/LG is that Celio links up with Lanette's PC system, and there's no need for a Time Capsule to trade with Hoenn.

The existence of the Time Capsule in G/S/C was entirely based on the programming need for it as opposed to any plot point for it. R/S/E was designed with a game like Fr/Lg in mind - and thus there wasn't any need for it at all, plot point or no.

Uh Doctor, you're trading with Red THREE YEARS AGO. Time Capsule, yes.

As for RS to E, I would assume that E takes precedence over RS, storyline wise.

Where is it stated that Generation I and Generation III take place at the same time?

Having R/S/E and FR/LG in the same Generation isn't proof that in my opinion, unless I'm missing something.

Uh Doctor, you're trading with Red THREE YEARS AGO. Time Capsule, yes.

That's just something that they came onto after realising they needed something to control the trading between R/B/Y/G - it's called the time capsule for plot reasons but its purpose in the game wasn't created out of a plot need. Whereas in Fr/Lg and R/S/E, there would only have been a need to create such a plot device of a machine for the point of in-game plot. There was no programming need for it as R/S was created with expansion in mind.

So claiming that there was "no time capsule in Hoenn" proves absolutely zip either way.

There's nothing weak about it. There's no time capsule to trade between Kanto and Hoenn. There's a Network Center instead, suggesting that the trades happen in real time, not in different eras of time.
