So it's a little late. Live with it, I wasn't home yesterday.
----
Ruuj held her newly lamenated trainer card as she watched fireworks shoot above the hills around Pallet Town. She held a Pokeball containing her first Pokemon, given to her by her uncle, Professor Blue Oak, named after his many-times great-grandfather. As each ball of fire exploded, she became more confident that she could follow the path of her ancestor, the legendary Red Aart.
As she looked at her watch, she realized that her tenth birthday was drawing to a close, and July 5 would be coming soon. She was starting her journey a day late, for three reasons; one, she wanted to see the fireworks one last time. Two, her close friend and cousin, Azul Oak, was turning ten tommorow. And three, she wanted to say goodbye to her mother. While she watched the eruptions and crackling explosions grew bigger and grander, she hoped she would live up to her family name, and maybe win the Pokemon League.
"Maybe you'll help me," she said to the metallic sphere she held. "I hope I made the right choice with you. A fighter, one that can show me what it means to be a trainer. You may not be what he started out with, but you're mine. If you help me, I'll be eternally grateful."
"Nervous?" Azul said as he crested the hill Ruuj sat on. "I could see why. If I could, I would run over to dad's lab at midnight to get my first Pokemon. But I'm so nervous, I'm sure I would freeze at the door. I saw you walk in, and you were shaking. But we'll travel together, right? Help each other out, find out what Red saw..."
"And see the gates to his memorial," Ruuj finished for him, reffering to the League Gates where statues of Red could be seen all over. She stood up, standing next to Azul as the final few blasts of the grand finale shook the air, and left for her house, ready for the long journey ahead of them.

Dedicated to my cousin, Helena. Happy tenth B-Day/Independence Day.
