Two men have been arrested in central India for allegedly killing a 7-year-old girl and cutting out her liver in a ritual sacrifice to ensure a better harvest, police said Monday.

Lalita Tati disappeared in October and her dismembered remains were found a week later, Rajendra Narayan Das, a senior police officer in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh state, told The Associated Press.
Police arrested two men, both poor farmers, last week and they told police they killed the girl to appease their gods and get a better harvest, Das said.

Tati was walking home after watching television at a neighbor's house when she was kidnapped, Das said. The two men confessed to cutting her open and removing her liver as an offering.

Das said the police had gathered enough evidence, apart from the confessions, to charge the two with murder. They would face life in prison or even the death sentence if convicted.

The men were described as "tribals," a term referring to the region's indigenous people, most of whom remain mired in poverty and illiteracy.

Human sacrifices are rare in India but get prominent attention every few years. A deep belief in traditional healers, or witch doctors, is common in mostly tribal Chhattisgarh.

What a bunch of freaks; I'm glad the police have caught them, this little girl did nothing at all to deserve being murdered.

It's great when your country's got people you refer to as "tribals", but you don't really find it necessary to lift a finger that way.

India has plenty of problems and nowhere near the resources to take care of them. I doubt the poverty and illiteracy of isolated "tribals" is of high concern to a government that is (last I read) crumbling while trying to take care of what it can.

It's too bad though. If they did have the ability to fix these problems, this girl would still be alive.

It may not be a great comfort to the young girl's parents, but at least the men responsible for this can be brought to justice.

Yes, it is extremely important to punish, probably executing, these people. Considering there's only 85 million living in such conditions over the country (an "isolated" number when it comes to India) hopefully the government could work something out in the way of a fence, to keep them from infesting the towns.

Isn't education a better option? Why isolate them when they might not know any better?
They're not animals, you know. They're human beings, and they can be educated if the government puts in the effort. No reason to punish an entire group of people over the acts of a few.

Wasn't that the concept of a South Park episode? Because that's the first thing that came to mind when I saw the title.

*googles*

Ah, indeed it was. That episode was so fucking disturbing. And so is this article. It probably hurts like hell to have that happen to you 0.o

I'm glad that things like this only happen "every few years", because this is really harrowing. I hope people see this and realize how lucky we really are

So, here's their logic for a better harvest:

1. Kill a young girl and cut out her liver
2. ???
3. Profit!

Yeah, I don't get it.

In all seriousness, these guys have been brought to justice and I hope they get what's coming to them.

India has so many problems (much like this) and can't seem to fix many of them. Maybe "traditions" like this need to be broken.

Shame. Due to the huge population, there are not enough resources for each and every person.

Which would eventually result in all these problems.
