I've seen a few ignorant postings about how this wouldn't be a "real game" because it's "just an app" or what have you. Ultimately, we don't really know what it will turn out to be like but I strongly feel that people should me more optimistic given who the developers are: Niantic (a talented team from Google!) and what they've accomplished so far.
They've developed a rather interesting and innovative game called Ingress, which inspired Nintendo higher ups with its potential for the Pokemon setting. The game is quite successful (without relying on old IP like Nintendo does for most of its games.) If Ingress sucked, Nintendo wouldn't have bothered to launch this project. So you should really look at it from this angle.
I've been looking into Ingress but it looks like there's quite the learning curve depending on how advanced you want to play. What's interesting to me are the big community and tactical/planning aspects of it.

We don't know if Pokemon GO will go to this depth or not, and I'm not sure how they'd replicate the whole position based tactical aspect of it in Pokemon if at all (I guess they could do it with a Team Magma/Team Aqua type of conflict? idk). But I'd like this to serve as a baseline by which we judge potential, rather than believe it'll be like Angry Birds or whatever just because it's running on a smartphone.
