Hey all, Meowth Spouse here. Figured I'd set up an introduction since I've been posting stuff this past week. I'm a Zoomer from the States who's loved Pokémon for as long as I can remember. I remember I got into it with Gen 4 as a kid and I've been here since.

My latest of hyperfixations is Meowth, as you can see (Specifically TR's Meowth, I'm actually pretty neutral on other Meowths or the species as a whole funny enough). In fact I came to the forum looking for dialogue on Meowth to satisfy my desire for more content on him. But there's more to me than him. I enjoy writing, cooking, video gaming, tabletop gaming, and a gazillion other things.

Anyway, Pokémon is a huge part of why I developed the way I did (Including being a furry oh god oh fuck). I remember reading fanfics way back on my tiny little phone, forcing my mom to go to McDonalds so I could connect to the wi-fi and get a Hoopa, and watching Indigo League reruns (Not in that order of course). Despite how many times it fades into the background as an interest for me, it will always be very close and special to my heart, and it always comes back center stage one day or another.

You're all awesome for keeping Pokémon alive. I never dreamed it'd be as prolific as it is today. Love you all (In a camaraderie sort of way) :bulbaHugs:

I LOVE MEOWTH RAHHHHHHH

Hey MNO and welcome to the forums on here.

What you mean by this? I don't think Pokémon ever got particulariy close to dying in my experience even as a non-American. Hasn't it always been big in the US? Or are you talking about Pokémon forums in general? I'm not on SNS but isn't there a lot of online discussion as well in those areas?

I agree that Pokémon has become more popular in recent year due to various factors such as high adoption of the Switch, flooding the market with F2P mobage and the buzz created by Pokémon Go and the publicity for inflated card value. You could say these products only were released to fill demand, but I don't think it's that simple. There was still a huge online community with numerous fan projects around what's now considered one of the low points during Gen 5, and those games weren't even complete flops financially. IRL I dunno because I didn't have any friends into Pokémon at the time, still tourneys for the TGC and VGC were consistently held and attended.

Overall, I'd say the increase in popularity is mostly caused by the lowering of the barrier of entry to Pokémon games and the franchise as a whole. It's become way easier to play the older games emulated on your phone or download one of the many official mobage for free over past 10 years. On a larger scale, it's been about creating a new demand by targeting the F2P mobile of those aware of Pokémon that didn't want to spend money on a console or new games. Engaging with a free and simple Pokémon games wasn't yet popularised outside of online fangames. You say you enjoy watching anime episodes. Am I right to assume you watch them on a streaming platform or YT? Or you have a VHS collection of the whole Indigo League arc? This is what I mean when I say the barrier is lower.

I'm a vocal critic of TPC and even I admit the way they've leveraged the digitalisation of the world to expand Pokémon presence in the world has been very successful. Of course not to discredit fan efforts during this time helping to contribute to the communities we have today. Both we and TPC have been firing on all cilinders, but I'd say top-down engineered nature of Pokémon popularity is hard to ignore. Not like this hasn't always been the case lol. Just rings more true to me as of late. Even if we are the ones letting Pokémon flourish, the nurture from those in charge has definitely been evident imo. Some say Pokémon can never die and is too big to fail and I believe this has been true for a very long time. Let's say communities like this one are the beautiful and strange flowers sprouting from a very strong and well-maintained plant with firm roots in the world of business. Not a perfect analogy tbh. This is all my opinion so please lemme know whether you ever felt Pokémon was dying or how "we" kept Pokémon alive. I'd like to hear your opinion on this. If this is too in-depth of a discussion it could be moved to its own thread.

It's huge now! Just about everyone my age, even if not a fan, has a fairly positive opinion of Pokémon and I think that's cool. Merch is sold at basically any store I go to, it's always a topic people will understand, and everyone likes it for different reasons. The battling, the designs, the anime, the games, the manga, Go, all the apps, I think it's great how being a fan of Pokémon is so diverse in meaning. A Star Trek fan has the show/movies, fanfics and artwork maybe but it revolves around the show. Pokémon revolves around a lot! :yay:

Hello, and welcome to the forums. Meowth is such a great Pokémon!

I’m glad being a fan of Pokémon is considered less taboo now. What I mean is, the people who bullied me in the past and called me ‘too old to be playing it’ are the same people that jumped on the Pokémon Go bandwagon. It’s a bit frustrating.

Admittedly, I’m not much of a Pokémon fan anymore but I’m willing to play new games if they interest me.

Oh hey,welcome.

Meowth is pretty funny haha.
Thanks! And he is >:3

I'm the opposite funny enough, I am so over the games I find them lame lmao. But you should get back into it! Meowth specifically, just Meowth. :bulbaLol:
