Irony: Why does 4Kids do this?

Isn't it ironic that 4Kids and other dubbing companies feel the need to shelter children from tobacco and alchohol, when one of the most popular bus ride songs is "Ninety-nine Bottles of Beer on the Wall" and candy companies make bubblegum cigars for children?

And then there's the matter of gun violence. Children as young as age 3 happily shoot their friends with water pistols and Nerf guns. Several classic shows frequently watched by children such as "Tom and Jerry" and "Looney Toons" contain several firearms intended for humor.

Why is 4Kids so concerned?

Guns, cigarettes and alchohol have no place on Saturday mornings.

Even if 4kids left it in, the FCC and KidsWb execs would demand that it be removed. This is how television works, they don't want to send negative messages to kids.

It's not like Pokemon ever had cigarettes.

Although, I don't see why they can't show an adult take a sip from wine.

Heh. One would have hoped that the "4Kids stole my sandwich" style topics would vanish now that they have no further relevance to Pokemon.

Guess not. :/

Well, the posted seemed to be talking about 4kids in general, who still have thier claws on GX *cries*

Dr. Oak lol.

Since this is about anime in general, does it belong here?

I thought the biggest complaint was that they gave us a sandwich. You know, instead of onigiri.

Which is kind of odd, now that I think of it in that context - I mean, usually people are happy to get a sandwich.

Espeically since kids can get almost all of those at school during the week. Guns? Have you ever watched Bugs Bunny being shot at by Elmer Fudd? Or Yosemite Sam?

There's a big difference between a Nerf gun and a real gun. Hell, there was a law passed to further distance the two. That's why Megatron can't be fucking released as a realistic gun, or reissued in America. Besides, you can't completely remove guns or the NRA will start shooting people. The tobacco industry has no power anymore, and it's hard to fake alcohol.

But wine should be allowed, atleast to show adults sipping on it. Most American kids see it every sunday, and even drink it!

Was it 4Kids or Kids' WB! making the wine glass edits?

I wonder if PSUA will be able to get away with more now that the show's not going to be on cable instead of broadcast...

You know, 4Kids seemed to send out mixed messages... they paint over a wine glass and then add a line with Meowth saying, "I'll drink ta 'dat!" o_O;

In season one, Jessie called herself a "wine expert". I believe that was in "The Ultamate Test" (the same episode in which she said she was 17, ironically). Later on, 4Kids got stricter. Or the FCC did. Or KidsWB did.

Well,I suppose that if a character is shot, and blood and guts gush from his wound, then yes it has no place on Saturday morning cartoons. But if a gun is simply shown on a picture, then there's no reason to edit it.

Just as long as we don't see teens getting drunk and vomiting everywhere, like on Family Guy,then what's the problem? Kids see their parents smoking cigarettes and drinking wine all the time.

Besides, has marijuana ever been used in pokemon?

It's amazing how standards have tightened up. I think part of it was the fcc going bonkers after "The Boob". The OPSMOD's have come out in force and few want to anger them.

I was going to bring up the exact same thing, YumeHeart. ^_^ It's not really 4Kids, it's more FCC, I think.
No marijuana. I doubt there'd be a way to put it in, anyhow. But that Shuckle juice that TR drank was very potent. XD

I would shit my pants if it ever was. It's not legal in Japan, either, and from what I've heard from a Japanese friend who has seen her fair share of drinking parties, it's not that easy to come by, either. Not like it is in the United States, at least.

I found a shop in Osaka where you could buy all sorts of illegal drugs, and I was only in the city for two days.

I weep for the world.
