Is anyone else sort of disappointed with Ash's team this generation?

When it comes to the D/P Pokemon, everyone talks about how Dawn and Brock's Pokemon this gen are full of personality and are funny characters. But it seems to me as if Ash got stuck with the short-end of the stick this gen.

Turtwig is pretty bland and uninteresting compared to previous grass types, and Staravia is fairly decent but sucks battle wise, so that really only leaves Chimchar and Buizel. While those two are nice, its still disappointing the writers stuck Ash with the same types he has every gen, even if he got them through different means.

I'm not sure why, but at this point his D/P team doesn't feel as interesting or as compelling as some of his previous teams did. Does anyone else feel slightly disappointed with Ash's lineup this gen? Hopefully some evolutions down the line can spice some of them up, at least.

EDIT: I originally posted this thread before I found out that Ash captured Gligar. Now it seems like his team is already looking a bit better. Gligar is awesome.

Ah, not realy, and Turtwig does to have personalty! Bulbasaur's a democrat and Turtwig's a republican, how can that not be cool? And since when does Staravia have personalty? On top of that, emo Chimchar RULES! But I think Buizel's personal was more interesting with Dawn, because they clash, and I liked that.

Ash's pokemon were never very exciting, with only key figures, namely Charizard, Torkoal, Bulbasuar, Pikachu, Squirtle, the GSC starters, and maybe Grovyle being really interesting. Some of the best personailtiies, liek Noctowl and Corpish, weren't used enough or compelty ignored. Turtwig is just a Bulbasuar clone, even if he is more liberal, and Staravia is following in Pidgeot's and Swellow's footsteps: little importance to the show beyond flight. Chimchar is really a Cyndaquil and Charizard combo, which makes him interesting enough, but Buizel is just a Grovyle clone, if not worse.

Staravia = Swellow
Turtwig < Sceptile
Chimchar > Torkoal
Buizel > Corphish

In my opinion obviously... and despite what I just said I still liked the Hoenn team better... I don't know why
I guess sometimes there's a difference between like each of the team members and the team as a whole

^ lol, we'll see. Then the Lucario fanboys will swarm the show. :p

Corphish was ignored? What? Corphish was used in the bulk of Hoenn Gyms and Frontier Brain matches, and battled in countless filler episodes. Corphish was used nearly as much as Grovyle over the course of AG. How can you honestly say Corphish was ignored? Did you watch the same show as everyone else?

and Staravia is following in Pidgeot's and Swellow's footsteps: little importance to the show beyond flight.

That is completely untrue. Swellow was used as a battler far more than the other two. Swellow was never treated as just a balloon scout, it was Ash's first flying type where he really used it for battle.

The reason why people liked Swellow is because it showed for the first time how strong a bird Pokemon could really be in battle, unlike Pidgeotto and Noctowl who didn't get used all that much.

The thing is Ash usually has the best team every generation, but this gen I think Dawn has better Pokemon than he does...

Currently, Ash's team is still a work in progress, they'll get better as more episodes pass.

I'll come right out and say I love Turtwig. The thing's adorable.

Mukkubird, Buizel, and Chimchar rock as well...so, I don't see the problem.

i dont really know what to say.....
but yea i am disappointed. I guess its just cuz i liked all his old pokemon better, especially the 1&2 generation ones.

But I've always wondered.....its true that the writers want to focus/introduce the new pokemon from each generation, but does anyone agree with me that Ash should have just stuck with his old pokemon. Remember all his "friends forever", "never separate" talks. Instead he just leaves them with Professor Oak. Plus if he used his old pokemon, Im sure he would kick butt, which is what everyone wants to see....instead of losing

I remember being pissed what Ash did to Bayleef. The poor thing had a crush on him for 3 seasons, and Ash just dumped Bayleef at Oak's and to top it all off...it did not even get a goodbye!

Did anyone notice Ash's Johto Pokemon never received a goodbye scene? Bulbasaur/Squirtle/Charizard all had memorable ending episodes when they left the team, and Ash's AG Pokemon were all standing there happily saying goodbye to Ash in the last episode of Battle Frontier.

But man, the Johto team sure was treated like shit. They didn't even get a goodbye episode and the writers pretty much forgot about them. Aside from Heracross and Donphan, his core three Johto starters and Noctowl have been completely ignored ever since Johto ended. None of them got a chance to make comebacks in Battle Frontier and they're essentially going to continue rotting there for the forseeable future.

Its almost like you can notice that the writers go out of their way to pretend a good portion of Johto never happened. Sad, really, as I did love Bayleef.

Maybe if there is a "return to Johto" year Ash can just take his Johto Pokemon with him. Cyndaquil, Bayleaf, Totodile, Pikachu, Noctowl, Heracross.

I'm not entirely disappointed. Just give Ash some time and I think his team should get better and improved. It takes time and effort to assemble just the right team, it just doesn't happen overnight.

I was initially, but with all the recent developments it's suddenly become a lot more colourful (in more ways than one) and thus I am more than content with the current set-up. However, I personally feel that none of the pokémon are currently as well defined in terms of overall character than the likes of Corphish, who imo was probably the best of Ash's pokémon in terms of personality. Though to be fair, it's only the newest acquisitions that actually have any real character, so I suppose it's not something to concern oneself with at the moment. But otherwise, I'm pleased with the route it's headed down.

Staravia = Swellow

Soon it'll become Staravia < Swellow. I must admit now that Swellow's proven to be a great battler than Pidgeotto or Staravia. What would Faulkner say?!?! *gasp*

Johto was raped by the writers. Personally, its the best place, best region, but no one cared about it. To them it was a "Kanto extension" of episodes. Probably thinking why Pokemon just added another 151 monsters. They weren't ready. They weren't prepared. Not to mention the bland pixel art, then the late change to CGI at the end. I dunno, the end of "Johto League Champions" through "Master Quest" was so long.

Heck, I can't differentiate between the second and third seasons of Hoenn.

It'll take time. But his recent capture of Gligar doesn't seem like he's getting Sinnoh Pokemon. That Hippopotas would've made a nice addition. Why Gligar though...we haven't seen that thing since the Gligarman episode in Johto.

Crap, I posted this thread right before the episode aired when Ash caught Gligar.

Now I may have to rethink things a little....Gligar is a pretty cool Pokemon.

If to add Gligar and Glalie now to my list... despite I didn't watch the episode I can already say I prefer Gligar

Gligar HAS Sinnoh evolution. And I am sure it evolve and Gliscor seem like good addition to Ash's team. But I don't understand it either. If they wanna show that old Pokémon have new evolutions, they sure do enough work on Ambipom. I personaly prefer some comic relief in Ash's team, like, lets say, Stunky or Skutank. It would be funny to have this Pokémon in main team.
But anyway, at least Ash will not have Riolu and 8 movie's fan shut their mouths up:thumbup:
