In the World Tournament, one option is that you can face major trainers in a mono-type challenge, with the player being forced to use that type as well. And obviously for Dark, there aren't any Dark type trainers, so they had to go for 3 'normal' trainers'.

But look you who one of the trainers is called.

Yep, Vito. Vito of the Winstrate family? Maybe, but it isn't confirmed. However, there is a bit of evidence - in Gen III, one of Vito's four Pokemon was Shiftry, and that Pokemon makes a return here (as well as five other Dark type Pokemon, three of which are from Hoenn).

So, do you think this could be Vito of the Winstrate family, or an entirely unrelated character all together?

Knowing how names repeat in both our world and the Pokemon world, it's probably just a coincidence. I mean, we have two Youngsters named Joey: one in Johto and one in Unova. That too was probably just a coincidence.

It is worth noting though that 4 of the 6 Pokémon he uses are from Hoenn.

I have already noted his Hoenn-centric theme in the PWT thread, but like I said there, his Japanese and English names are not the same. Bulbapedia is being weird listing the Japanese VA's with the English character names, but the name chart shows his name is Ryohei iirc.

Unless @Serebii went to the trouble of translating his name for us by catching this, Vito from Hoenn and this Vito technically dont even share the same name.

Well is there any way to check if the trainer's name is Ryohei (which would confirm that this is Vito)?

Serebii is reporting it as Vito. The only way we'd know for sure if you dont trust him is if someone playing the game confirms he has the same Japanese name, but right now I doubt Serebii translated the name without mentioning it.

You can also look for PWT videos on Youtube (using untranslated Japanese roms) and match up the characters.

Finally, in the unlikely event it *is* the same name, all these trainers get a brief intro so that may inform us if he is indeed Vito Winstrate.

Fair enough. Shame that E4 isn't in the World Turnament, because they could have had Karen, Sydney and Grimsley representing the darks xD.

It's a shame I'm not far enough in the game to check myself...

No need, confirmation from @bluesun on the PWT thread shows his Japanese name is indeed Vito and his lines make no mention of Hoenn.

The Dark specialist tournament just got less interesting.

Nah, it's not Ryouhei. His name's actually Vito (ヴィトー).

Though Serebii is really weird with names sometimes. (Jurietta, Rozumari, Marugurito, Jefur?, Channel, Policy I spy in the Black Skyscraper/White Hollow Tree lists -- they should be Julietta, Rosemary, Marguerite, Jeffrey, Nel, Housaku, etc)

On the bright side, maybe GameFreak will finally they take this as a sign we need some Dark-type Gym Leaders?

I hope it is Vito. I remember realizing the connection when I was about 10. Blew my mind.

You guys, crushing my hopes with your research, logic, and common sense. :(

Vito could have changed his name. Or it's a retcon. Or the Japanese version is taking a cue from the English version. I'm grasping at straw here.

The lack of the correct Japanese name is discouraging, but it still could be Vito. I hope it is, that would be cool.

Also, this guy uses a Shiftry, same as Vito Winstrate.

He'll be Vito in my head when I'm battling him, so no worries there.

That's a serious case of denial right there, and I'm there with you D:

English names being incorrect is nothing, the localisation team misses movie references and even called Janine Charine, but Game Freak would know who they are. Unless that American Game Freak Employee programmed him D:

Yes. Let's all be in denial together. I'm in denial with a lot of stuff in this game already so why not Vito.....

Vito's not exactly a common name (at least, not that I know of), so in my opinion it's still fairly likely. ^^;

It's hardly likely when Vito isn't even his name in the Japanese version. There is absolutely no evidence to support the idea
I suppose. And for evidence, there's the name and Shiftry. Not much, but yeah. I don't care a whole lot to be honest, it's just a minor trainer in Hoenn. =/
