Yeah, what do you think? Music or electronic crap? I believe it's music but @TheCapsFan; disagrees.

Music is whatever the artist says is music.

I don't believe it is anybody's place to dictate what "music" is since, aside from technically agreed classifications for the sake of organisation, I don't think one can or should really be trying to quantify creative and subjective things in such a way. I don't like dubstep personally, but it is a series of sounds woven together in a deliberate manner and that does make it music to my mind.

I think it's fine. When electronic stuff is done to music well, it really enhances the intensity of it. Done not as well, and it's just annoying.

Well it is technically music. It's purpose is to be aurally pleasing and significant. Whether you think it is danceable or fun or rubbish is up the listener. I don't like much dubstep and I hate brostep. But every genre has its gems.

Yes, it is music. It'd be like saying video game music isn't music.

Yeah, going by dictionary definition. But good music? Depends on the listener's tastes.

Isn't this true of most musical genres?

Yeah, going by dictionary definition. But good music? Depends on the listener's tastes.

Again, difficult to quantify the quality of an entire genre in one fell swoop. There are few other genres where people attempt to do this so I never understand why it's so common to do it with dubstep. There's a huge variety in dubstep, from the more mainstream songs that most non-dubstep fans wouldn't even especially quantify as dubstep (it's not really any more electronic than a huge number of pop/rap songs) to hardcore wubwubwub whattheshitisgoingon sort of dubstep. Obviously within that huge spectrum there are also huge numbers of songs of massively varying quality.

Hell no. Dubstep is noise. Shitty noise, I might add. Shitty, loud, abrasive, electronic noise.

Regardless of personal taste, dubstep falls clearly into the definitions of music. There are a lot more radical types of experimental and progressive music that most modern listeners would call "noise" but still remains music - whether you like it or not. :p

I say yes. Though I'm the type of person who likes a beat and flow of a song rather than words.

Dubstep ain't music. It's just noise, as @Orion; states. My reason for that is that you can make anything into dubstep, my favorite example is a car accident. As terrible it may seem, it's just a justification for my point. Dubstep is just music.

I think that dubstep is indeed music, but not the kind of music we are used to.
A musical composition is usually conformed by two main characteristics: rhythm and melody. The genre dubstep focuses more in what is the rhythm, so most people don't find it appealing because of it's constant change of it. Now, I have to admit that sometimes the is not even rhythm, which is the main reason that people questions if it's music or not.
I honestly don't like it, and I wouldn't think about downloading a complete album; but I think that there are people for every taste.

It's ludicrous to think dubstep is anything other than music. If it's sound created with the intent of being, y'know, music, rather than just sound, then it's music. It doesn't matter if it's arrhythmic, it doesn't matter if it lacks melody; all that matters is that an individual or body of individuals created it and deliberately differentiated it from unrestrained ambiance. It's no less music than the Carmina Burana and no more than Metal Machine Music.

Just because something goes against the artistic norms of a medium does not disqualify it from being part of that medium. "The Red Wheelbarrow" is still poetry, isn't it?

This is possibly one of the most stupid topics I have seen in a long time.

Whether or not it's good music, is a completely different matter. Besides, if you don't like it, don't listen to it? It doesn't have to be more difficult than that.

Yes it's music. It's nonsensical to even try and dispute that. As far as theory goes (both musical-wise and production-wise), some dubstep is actually quite complex music.

Too many people fall into the "I don't like it so it sucks" mindset. I wouldn't choose to listen to most dubstep, but that doesn't mean it's not good. Obviously you're gonna get some poor attempts, but you get that with every genre.

Agree with this completely. I'm not exactly a huge dubstep fan, but I'm getting sick of debates about "is this music?" that really mean "is this good music?"

It is music but not song :)

Song is a specific form of musical composition, so a lot of good music are not "songs."
