Here me out.

In Sinnoh, one complaint that came up over time is that Chimchar, once Ash got it, slowly turned into the most prominent of his Pokemon. While it wasn't noticeable early on due to Maylene and then Crasher Wake, after that Chimchar won against two Pokemon in the following 4 gyms, personally winning the match for Ash in all but Byron. This also led to Ash's other Pokemon, mostly Buizel and Torterra, get turned into Jobbers for him (Buizel in the fight with Byron, Torterra with Volkner). I'd put Gliscor against Snover and Pikachu vs Driftblim here too, if the loses didn't rub me as badly because Gliscor was never hyped up a a powerhouse at that point and the Driftblim had established team killer reputation by that point and used a neat strategy.

Now, like Chimchar Froakie has a extensive backstory unlike most mons. He's a starter that's arguably the most popular of it's generation, and gets a lot of major fights and battles. However, he doesn't come off as badly as Chimchar did: he lost to Tyrunt and gave a roughly equal performance to Talonflame in the Meowstic fight. The only time I'd argue he was hyped up at the expense of another Pokemon was in the Ramos gym battle, and Hawlucha managed to recover his hype against Helioisk and Spritzee, the latter in a battle with similar type issues to Frogadier's match with Ramo and one that Frogadier would arguably have been just as, if not better suited than Hawlucha had been.

Of course he does have that Ash-Greninja thing, though we're going to have to see how that goes. But then again, I'd like to see Blaze Infernape vs a Mega at some point.....

Am I looking too much into this, or do you think that Froakie is the improved Chimchar storyarc, with 100% less Paul.

I don't think so. They both different pokemon and have different strength/weaknesses. At least this time he has a fully evolved water starter.

The lack of Paul thing makes it seem a whole lot different. The biggest thing for Infernape was the Sinnoh league battle against Paul, Greninja isn't going to have something like that battle and I doubt they would have the rest of Ash's Kalos team struggle in a battle only to win on the strength of one Pokemon like they did with Infernape. Also Froakie never really had any issues it had to overcome like Blaze or fear of Zangoose and Paul. Its really a lot different, the only comp is that it is a fast Pokemon that is the best on his current team, which could compare to his Sceptile too.

I agree that they both fill the same niche (which one could argue that Lizardon actually created), but I don't think that the Geckouga story is improved compared to Goukazaru. They both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Goukazaru had a much more fleshed out backstory, ongoing struggles and a fated battle against Shinji. Unfortunately the writers felt the need to shaft others (Dodaitose anyone?) in order to showcase it. Geckouga does feel like much more of a team player but I found its backstory pretty pathetic and despite this Satoshi-Geckouga hype, I'm not really mesmerised by the story in the same way I was with the Satoshi-Shinji-Goukazaru triangle in Shinnou. We've still (probably) got half a saga to see how it plays out though...

Is Froakie an improved Chimchar? No, their story is very different.

But if they are considered the same story by anyways, no. Its definitely nowhere close to improved. Worst seems to be the better word. I can't even find a way to write a worse script than this one. I thought the Goodra goodbye arc was bad writing, I was totally wrong.
