Hi all,

I have been a fan since The very first games, but I just recently got back into the game.

This being said, I completed missed out on Gen. III because i wasn't interested with pokemon for a number of years. It was Gen. IV that lured me back into the games.

So, friends, my questions to you are:

Would it be worth it for me to go back and experience a gen. III game in the advance port on my DS?

If I were interested in finding a used Gen. III game to buy, which version would be the best one of Gen. III?

I'm new here so sorry if this is opening up a can of worms or a huge debate. It's just hearing you guys talk about all these pokemon from Gen. III I feel like I might missed out on something.

Am I crazy? lol just kidding... Thank you for your replies :mallet:

Hello! Gen III was my absolute favourite, so I recommend you get Emerald(If you can find it). My favourite game I own is Sapphire, and I never actually got Emerald(Which is apparently better)

I got back into the games last August, so I had to catch up on Gen IV.

Play emerald definately. It improves on everything that RS offered so its the obvious choice ;) Very fun game.

Pokemon Emerald is one of the best (and my personal favorite) Pokemon games in the main series. Hoenn is a beautiful region, and Pokemon Emerald boasts a great plot and some great characters, many unique and awesome locations, and a great selection of Pokemon. I would definitely recommend you play through it first, as long as you can find it.

FireRed and LeafGreen are faithful remakes of the original games; they retain all the charm of the originals, but aside from the Sevii Islands, there isn't too much new content. If you're looking for a nostalgia overload, or you simply want to explore Kanto all over again, I'd say it's worth the purchase. This is, of course, assuming you've already played through the originals - if you haven't, I'd recommend them much more, but playing Emerald should still be your number one priority.

I'd go with Emerald (it improved on Ruby and Sapphire immeasurably, in both the story, features and graphics) and one of the Kanto remakes. I'd try to find them locally in a used store, though, rather than relying on eBay. There are more fake GBA games on eBay than real ones, and it's usually impossible to tell you've been ripped off until you actually receive the game.

You'll get varied answers on that one. Gen III is by far the biggest caseof Brocken Base in the Pokemon fandom. If you're used to Gen IV graphics and mechanicsm it may take a while to get used to it. However, you shouldn't miss any of the generations as all of them have their good points. Which you like best depends on your preference. Many have complained about the sea routes. BUt at the same time, Hoenn has many varied environments.

The best of Gen III is definitely Emerald. It combines the plots of Ruby and Sapphire with very few flaws. And Rayquaza's epic descent is Epic. The music is heavy on Trumpet style music. I feel Gen III had the best music.

You may also want to check out one of Fire Red and Leaf Green as both are great games. The Sevii Islands are awesome addition even if the quests there are very short.

Colosseum and XD also count as Gen III games. These games are the only console versions to have any story line. Both are excellent games. Colosseum in particular is different from the other games as the main character is an Anti-Hero ans significantly older(In his late teens) than all the other main characters.

I consider Emerald to be one of the finest games ever produced. Colosseum and XD are also well worth a look.

The only problem I have with Generation III is its incompatibility with the previous two generations. Other than that, it's definitely worth at least one playthrough.

I've never actually played Emerald, but I have heard good things about it. I also highly recommend Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness.

Thank you all for your kind replies. I am thinking now that I will defintely head down to my local used game store tomorrow and see if they have any for cheap.

(PS thank you to whichever mod moved this thread to the proper place. my bad:XD2:)

A word of caution - look out for pirated games. The best way to tell if a game is pirated or not is to look at the back of it. Real games will have a small, square shaped metal part visible on the back. The color of the cart should also be traslucent, so you can see through it.

If you want to be 100% sure however, you should bring along a Gen IV game. Catch 6 useless Route 101/102 Pokemon and try to migrate them. If it erases the Gen III game's data, it's a pirated copy.

Gen III's Emerald is the best game in the series. It contains the Hoenn region, which even if revisited in Gen V, still could not capture the beauty of the Part-Gen II Part-Gen IV style graphics. The first game with true colour and animation, and with a pure gold storyline, I restarted emerald and saved forgetting I had a deoxys on it

I'd say it is definitely worth a visit. And, like the others, I would recommend you go with Emerald, as it has the more the more complete story, more features, and it has the Battle Frontier.

IMO (In My Opinion), the third gen is one of the best Gens so far.
If your lucky enough to find any of them, I would go with Emerald.
Quick comparasion to Ruby and Sapphire to Emerald:
R & S -
Houeen starters
The 8 gyms
The Elite Four
In Sapphire, you can get Kyogre
Ruby- Groudon
Battle Tower (Not the frontier)
Sapphire- Latias
Ruby- Latios

Emerald-
A slightly better Story Line then R & S
Houen starters
Johoto starters (When you finish the Hoeenn dex)
Rayquazza, Groudon and Kyogre (If I'm correct, you can get them all in Emerald)
The only Major Difference is that you can't get either of the Latis without an event that ended a while ago.
Battle Frontier (Not just the Battle Tower)
More Pokémon in the Safari Zone
List of Safari Pokémon in Emerald
Wait, you can get Latias in Emerald, it roams around after the Elite Four
And Latios, CD said you have to choose one, them it roams around Hoenn

I only played Sapphire, so I'm not sure of the differences between the two, but what's listed above I know is true. :)
So I'd go with Emerald, it offers more. :)

First off, you might have trouble readjusting to the Physical/Special system...I always do when I replay Emerald. :p

Also, another plus of the 3rd Gen I feel doesn't get enough praise is the variety of Pokemon to choose from. The Dex is 202 strong and, outside of Jirachi and Deoxys (Rayquaza in R/S) you can get all of them post-E4, giving you a lot of variety as the game probably has the best mix of types too.

For example, before the first Gym, you can get Ralts, Zigzagoon, Taillow, Wingull, Poochyena, Wurmple, Marrill, Slakoth, Seedot, and Lotad (last two depending on what version you've got) which is a nice variety of types for the early game.

Of course, you may see this as a bad thing if you dislike the Gen III Pokemon...but, I feel the best way to get to like the new Pokemon is actually using them.

You can get Rayquaza in Ruby and Sapphire, trust me i have done it.

I personally wouldn't recommend it, as you're not missing much. It's usually considered the "worst" Generation.

However, if you decide to try it, get Emerald. It contains a large variety of Pokemon to capture; including all of the Weather trio. It also has sidequests, such as the Battle Frontier.

Or FR/LG if you want a nostalgia trip.

Emerald is worth a visit for all the reasons already said. It wasn't a bad game. As for the remakes, you may enjoy playing through those if you liked the originals.

Only FireRed and LeafGreen were really worth it. If you want the whole experience, try Emerald. I never liked that generation.

My feelings on ADV is that while RSE were rather bland and boring, that unfairly puts a bad rap on the other great games that came out in that period. Remember that RSE =/= the whole of ADV. I like FR/LG not just because of the nostalgia factor, but they were genuinely enjoyable games. XD, while not the GBA game you're looking for, is probably the best non-handheld Pokemon game ever (a good case can be made for Stadium 2 but it's not an RPG). Honestly, though, as other posters have said you are not missing much and it's better to just stick with the 4th gen games. Same shit, similar story, more content.

A pokemon plot being overdone. Thats laughable. The previous Gen's had no real plot.

But I'll stop right there. This isn't the place to argue which is the best generation.
