Is it just me, or are the contests biased?

This probably should go in some other thread, but I couldn't find one and wasn't really sure.

I think that the contests seem to be bias against some trainers (Namely Jessie and Ursula) Heres my Exhample. In the Togekiss episode, seviper is literally playing with the Jubilee pokemon like a ragdoll. Hitting it with various Haze/Poison Tail attacks, wrapping it and smashing it into the ground and Dodging all of Togekiss attempts to pull something off itself. Seviper has pulled off many moves and attacks sucessfully and has poor Togekiss down to half of it's total points. Then, Togekiss blocks one Bite attack with a Safeguard and Seviper's points are cut down a quarter. IN ONE HIT. I'm not arguing about what follows, but If it was fairer, Togekiss should have barely scraped a victory or lost by an inch.

Anyone else?

Re: Is it just me, or are the contests biast?

Jessie's Pokémon are always portyed weak in contests and other battles, in defense at least. They are always done in two hits.

Also, seeing the preview picture of DP175 one might speculate that Dawn will get a knock out victory against Ursula in DP175 so time limit won't be a problem.

It's "biased" but whatever.

Safeguard blocked an attack and gave Togekiss a nice little glow. Hence more points lost for Musashi.

it's called plot and randomly moving colored bars. Anime shows are full of them.

Yes and no... The point of contests is that they're not regular battle where the goal is to knock out your opponent, but it's also about utilizing moves and pokémon in an elegant, beautiful and creative way (basically make with da sparklez).

If I remember the contest correctly... Seviper attacks Togekiss a lot, but doesn't really do it in a beautiful way, where as every single one of Togekiss' attacks was made to look elegant and sparkly and showed off Togekiss

I think Jessie's angle was to make Togekiss look stupid, flailing it around and such. Also if you ask me, Seviper was dodging the attacks pretty elegantly (The penultimate Aura Sphere).

The contests aren't biased, the writers are.

Considering how often the "good guys" lose, I doubt you can say that.

I'd say it's just arbitrary. Whatever point loss is most dramatic, they do that.

This. It's very true.

Seriously, how could contests be biased? The defeats of some characters are opportunities for character developement and neccesities for the plot.

Now Jessie was always shown as a weak competitor, defensively. That's why she loses a lot. However, her offensive strategies are usually very strong and damaging. And if they have a bias against her, why did she make it to the GF?
Also, I bet Jessie will be even more of a threat in contests in BW. I bet that she might make it into the top 4 in BW's GF.

As for Ursula, she loses because she's a b*tch...an AWESOME b*itch for the sake of the plot. By defeating her, Dawn will get better as a coordinator and their rivalry will spicen up. Yay for Drama!

Re: Is it just me, or are the contests biast?

I keep thinking back to the episode when Mamoswine debuted for contests, when James was pretending to be Jessie. Carnivine dodged all the attacks elegantly, Mamoswine was going absolutely nuts with rage and was completely inelegant, and yet when we look back at the scoreboard, James lost about half his points. WTFH?!

I agree with this. It's almost as if the writers wanted the main coordinators to lose (or win, depending on the situation).

Contests really just make up shit as they go along.

It's like playing Calvinball.

Yeah Jessie has good strong evolved pokemon and Dawn doesn't yet she still loses to her what's up with that

The problem is that Jessie never uses her stronger Pokemon in the battle round. When will she learn that Yanmega would do great in the Battle Round? As far as I can tell, it's the only Rocket Pokemon to send the twerps blasting off. Ever. (Remember Yanmega's debut?)

If you ask me, the scoreboard has never been correct since the very first contest we saw and I've been complaining about this inconsistency ever since.
By now I've learned to put up with that...well at least partly, but thank God that the contests are only a byproduct of the Anime so to speak and that the main focus is still on the Pokemon TRAINERS and the battles. I guess this makes it easier for us to tolerate the sometimes flawed contests.

I hope this will help allay your fears concerning the bias.

Nice analogy! Haven't seen that in awhile, so kudos to you!

But that about sums contests up. They're all about the plot. Logic got nothin' to do with it, or we'd have seen Jessie and Ursula get all their ribbons before Dawn (esp. when Ursula completely shut Dawn down in their last battle).

Yes. It's called "main character syndrome."

Except in those contests where the points work in favor of the opponent.

Basically, whoever is going to win a contest will get more points from their opponents, and take less point damage when they're attacked, and yet the opposite will happen to the other character.

Granted, I don't really care. The point bar has never made total sense.

This. I never really did get the point system and it always seems the writers are biased against the character who will win in that certain episode.

Contest sometimes make me wonder how the character would fare in full battles against each other. Like Dawn vs Ursula or Nando, or Zoey vs Ursula or Kenny. Because one character can be losing in terms of a the battle aspect, but win thanks to using flashier moves, and a time up.

Though to go against Ursula's idea that Dawn only wins thanks to time, the writers will probably allow her to knock Gabite and Flareon out.
