Is it just me, or do the rivals get more badass by the season?

I was the first one to reply and I say "Hell yeah!"
In badass by the meaning of FTW awesome, yeah. The original series only had Gary and Ritchie. Gary was only seen in 15 out of the 270 episodes of that series. Gary was acting like a douche at first but he later becomes a friendly rival in Johto. Ritchie was only seen in about 5 episodes and he wasn't really a "rival." Advanced Generation had no real rivals at all (assuming Morrison counts). Morrison was only there for the tournament, nothing else. Paul and Barry are actually here to stick around and they are better than any other rival for Ash in the past.
In badass by the definition of being a badass, then yes. Paul obviously wants stronger pokemon so he gets rid of the ones he deemed weak. More so than Gary who has also caught a lot of pokemon but has trained them as opposed to getting rid of them. Paul makes Gary look friendly by comparison.
