Is it just me or has the series been toned down over the years?

...or has Pokemon been toned down? i know it seems difficult to believe it's even possible, but the earlier episodes seemed aimed at at least a bit of a wider audience. definitely still aimed mostly at the younger viewers, but pretty much anyone could watch it. I find that the newer seasons are even more aimed at children than the older ones. Yes, I know Pokemon is, for the most part, a children franchise, don't get me wrong. Anyone else notice this?

Even the way Brock hits on women has changed. It used to insinuate, at least to some degree, that Brock pretty much wanted to make out/have sex with them. Obviously, this was not blatantly stated, but was still what I(and others) interpreted it as. He still its on women all the time, but he almost seems less aggressive. But hey, who knows? maybe I just had a dirty mind when i was a kid, or maybe I simply have a different view on the show than others, but that is the reason I made this topic. to discuss the changes from the earlier seasons, to what is happening now(as in character interaction and stuff like that).

For the tl;dr crowd
Pokemon is more aimed at kids now than it once was, even though it always has been. Discuss.

Re: Is it just me...

Its aimed at relatively the same age group now that it was when it started.

We all just grew up.

Re: Is it just me...

They probably got complaints from outside of Japan and they need to air them in other countries to make bigger profits. Its because there's too much censoring in the media of several Western/Middle Eastern nations.

Re: Is it just me...

Yeah, you're probably right, Urban. i remember during the ruby and sapphire arc, I think, they temporarily stopped airing an episode because May said "Wanna do it, Ash?"(She was talking about a team double battle).

Wow, that's too suggestive for a kid's show (or maybe not, dont remember that one).

I think its the Disneyfication of the franchise.

Re: Is it just me...

J is 99% most likely to be dead. I don't recall seeing anything like that in Kanto. I also think Satoshi and Hikari's plots are a bit more serious than the stuff you saw back then, what with Hikari being depressed for a few episodes and all the abusive stuff Shinji does.

So no, if anything I think the show is slightly growing up with the audience.

Re: Is it just me...

I think he is talking more about the sexual innuendo, compared to the literary stuff.

Re: Is it just me...

The Pokemon anime has always been watched by younger audiences, but it's just that more and more older people are starting to watch it (and some of those older people may have watched it while they were young).

Re: Is it just me...

The show hasn't changed. We have. We see it as childish because we're (hopefully) more mature now.

Re: Is it just me...

It's always been a kodomo-shonen type anime. Brock still acts the same too, if not even more sexual.

If anything, it's gotten even more serious lately.

Re: Is it just me...

I think most if not all of the juvenile humor is gone, but I don't really think that's a bad thing.

Re: Is it just me...

So it turned more into a PBS kids show compared to something from Nick?

I'd say it's more like a CN western cartoon during into a CN anime..Wait, what?

Anyway, if you compare it to Nick, it's a Nick show that stayed a Nick show but better then most Nick shows have stayed.

I definitely feel that it has.

Remember when Nyasu used to scratch people's faces on a regular basis? Remember when Musashi used to hit her friends over the head with whatever object she could get her hands on? Remember firearms? Cleavage?

Nowadays, you're lucky to see two pokemon hit each other without a big impact star getting in the way. Remember the Season 10 episode "Gymbaliar," when Musashi wasn't even allowed to throw a glove at someone without a big impact star?

While it's certainly true that things are starting to get back to the way they were, what with J's death and all, the show is very much toned down from the way it was.

Not true. Shudo stated himself in his blog, that the show originally was meant for wider audience - they wanted to make it appealing for both children and adults. But he noticed that as the time passed by, the episodes started to be more childish, starting from Jouto.

That's how I feel too, btw.

Eh, I feel it. Try getting an episode with James blowing up fake boobs in DP. Not gonna happen. I can't remember the last time I saw Prima-sized knockers or explicit violence against humans. Well, other than the fact the J was sent spiraling into the dark abyss in the water to be blown into smithereens.

But it's not that I mind, I don't exactly watch pokemon for it's raunchiness. XD

In some aspects (boobs and shipping), yes it's been toned down, but in other aspects (J, Galactic, depression, etc.) it's actually gone more mature.

What exactly about the depression is mature? Gible's not the only one who's used the depression as an example. I really don't know... how depressing is this depression? How great is this depression?

Also, I wish Pokemon still had those elements from the past. The things it's had now (like J) are cool, but... I wish Pokemon had all of that stuff. =P

(Except the inflatable boobs...)
