Is it worth watching Johto?

Hello all, I just recently started getting back into the Pokemon anime. I just rewatched the Orange Island arc which is the point I dropped off. I glanced through Bulbapedia and it seems like Johto has a LOT of padding. Should I just skip over it and begin to watch the Honen stuff? Would I be missing out on anything big or exciting?

I say it is worth it! Yes, there are a lot of filler eps, but It's one of my favorite seasons. You'd miss Ash winning his Johto badges, leaving a couple pokemon behind (squirtle and charizard), Ash catching his Johto pokes, Misty and Brock leaving and thats probably the most important stuff that you'd miss.

Thanks for the speedy responses!

I'm thinking about making a guide for myself that cuts out all the filler episodes. But even though some material is filler doesn't mean it's automatically bad. Are there any notable filler episodes in the Johto stuff?

The poor quality is exagerated, though not grossly so, as there's a lot of honest-to-goodness trash throughout. But the same can be said of any other series, frankly. Sinnoh has continuity and plot centric stuff, but a lot of it is pretty dull, for example. Johto definately has many episodes that are well worth at least one watch, several of which are the best the series has to offer. Best bet would probably be to scroll through a list of episodes and go with the ones that sound good.

Fillers can be entertaining, so I wouldn't recommend missing an episode just because it doesn't directly relate to gym battles, captures etc

I'm just wondering what makes you so sure the Hoenn episodes are something you want to see?

The problem most had with Jouto was the long stretches where nothing of consequence happened. When you're watching the series on a weekly basis without knowing what's going to happen next, and when the next capture/gym is going to happen, it's understandably somewhat frustrating to get the nth "Satoshi and friends help a trainer with a troublesome Pokemon" episode in a row. Fans were hungry for the plot to move onwards, and the series failed to deliver week after week, month after month.
Watching the episodes in order years later obviously eliminates this problem - you have a pretty fair idea of where the plot is going and how much longer the arc will last, while not having to wait a week between episodes. The problem was never the quality of the episodes themselves, but rather so pacing.

So yeah, go for it.

I'd say go for it too. Johto is pretty okay if you're watching it straight through and only once or twice. Plus, if you don't, you'll miss the ending to Gary and Ash's rivalry which is actually a pretty cool battle, in my honest opinion.

I didn't have problems with Johto when I marathoned through the whole anime, though IIRC it got much better towards the end.

I think you should watch it. There are a lot of good episodes in Johto and if you're going to watch the rest of Ash's journey, it seems like a shame to miss some of it out. If you get to a filler that is neither interesting nor funny, you can just skip it.

I say it's worth it. For all the filler, Johto was still one of my fave part of Ash's journey. Plus, it gave us Ash VS Gary.

Most of the Johto haters are seriously exaggerating, you should watch the whole show and Johto is just as part of it as any other saga
That reminds me I still need to continue my rewatch... hopefully soon

Personally, no. Johto was interesting when we didn't know what direction the anime was going to take, and unfortunately it wasn't a fun one.

I thought the writers had problems coping with the fact the franchise was cooling off, and how to handle the transition in the games.

Some episodes might have been good, but as a whole its lower entertainment compared to Kanto and DP.

I'm doing it right now and yes, Johto is worth watching. Sure you have the occasional filler that makes you want to tear your eyes out and rip out your ears so you won't have to watch it anymore, but that's every saga.

Johto brought us some wonderful things, the pokémon on Ash's team now have real personalities, Misty and Brock now battle more often, Ash actually earning his gym badges for real, etc. So I say do it.

I'd say go for it. Johto has some very good eps. Make sure you watch "Forest Grumps" too, by the way! A very good filler, IMO.

Oh, and those eps that concern Ash getting his last badge - those are pretty good too, and even include a nice battle amongst dragons (you'll see what I mean if you watch them - I'm not going to ruin it for you).

Yes, watch Johto. Trust me, I hear and understand the gripes of what seems to be the majority of the Pokemon fandom, but in the end it all comes down to personal preference, and Johto actually happens to be one of my favorite sagas (better than OI, in my humble opinion). Yeah, it's true that there's more filler than actual plot, but there's still this great sense of fun present throughout most of the episodes, which is more than DP can say.

As was previously mentioned, some of the best episodes the series has to offer can be found in Johto, so definitely give it a chance!

Yeah, you should watch Johto. It isn't as terrible as some people on this forum say. I do wish it had less fillers, though.

Selective watching. It's what I do.

You can watch riveting stuff like The Whistle Stop or The Apple Corp... or skip to the episodes that are actually a joy to watch.
