Does Langley come off as a bit of an expy of Evangelion's Asuka? Their personalities do come off as similar, they share a common name, and Langley's seiyuu is named Misato. They even look mildly similar:

Isn't virtually every major character in the anime based on some type of anime trope to begin with? You can find a character similar to almost the entire main cast in any other series.

Adding to this by saying that since her full name is Asuka Langley Soryu, 'Soryu' has 'Ryu' in it.

You know, like the word for dragon?

While they might have some similarities, i don't think those are enough to say that Langley was based exclusively on that character, since there are a buttload of characters with similar personalities that could have inspired Langley's background, or her personality, or, at the same time, they could have just created her with such traits without thinking of another characters.

It's like comparing Alder to Jiraya for sharing similar traits (same hair style, interest in women, and very powerful).

I think her name and personality are vague references (I got that impression in her debut episode), but I don't think they look similar.

not only that. the 'Soryu' in Asuka's name has exactly same pronunciation with Opelucid city's original japanese name. (as そうりゅう in hiragana)

Ohmigod, Langley is called Langley, Asuka is called Asuka Langley Soryu (or Shikinami, as in Rebuild) and Langley's voice actress shares the name with another Evangelion character - and they're both extroverted girls!

Seriously, this is such a stretch. Evangelion's Asuka and Misato aren't the only Asukas and Misatos out there.

Didn't the fandom already exhaust the Evangelion-Pokemon references last series when people were dead certain Shinji and Reiji were intended to be references to Gay Emo Kid Shinji and Gay Emo Slut Rei?

^ Also one of the reasons why ikarishipping is named as such.

I feel like no matter what it is every anime has to make as many Evangelion references as humanly possible.

I really never watch Evangelion
But after reading about her by your link I did come up with one option
Asuka's personality is perfect for both Ash's Rival & Lover
Too bad, Even if Langley is some sort of copy of Asuka , She's not Ash's Rival & too old to be Ash's lover
I would be more please If one of Ash's same aged Girl rival was a copy of Asuka rather then Langley who is Iris's Rival
