Without ever really giving it much conscious thought, I have just known that Platane/Prof. Sycamore is Alan/"Alain"'s father.

Reasons for:
1. They look the freaking same, including the same damn colour palette! (But Alan has shinier hair...)

2. Daddy issues. See: Every appearance of Alan, ever.
3. What more evidence do you need?!

Reasons against:
1. Back in DP, I knew Jindai (Brandon) was Shinji (Paul)'s father but the anime chose to bypass this obvious truth.
2. I can never love again.
3. I mean--

Anyway, you guys agree with me right??
 
Theory: Maybe not father, but other relatives. So, they are still part of a big family.

I don't think that's the consensus on his age. Maybe I'm wrong.

Bear in mind that Professor Oak is 50, as established by Movie 4. I'd peg Birch and Juniper as being in their early 40s, and Elm, Sycamore in Kukui in their early 30s. Rowan is known to be 60 from the games.

Edit: Even Professor Birch is 35 according to ORAS. If we're really pushing it, Sycamore is also 35 and Alain is 15, but I'd wager on the gap being 15 years.

Speaking of Alain, y'know his name isn't an attempt to be edgy or anything(Alan + SLAIN)---that's legitimately the French spelling of Alan according to Behind the Name.

I'd say Sycamore is 33-34. But since he's a flirt and can be a little silly at times, maybe he was a lot worse when he was younger. After he had Alain (and some other kids, probably) and went to college, he could have cleaned up his act.

But you're all missing another possibly theory that explains their similarities: Alain is SYCAMORE'S father, but in the future. Remember, Alain is referenced in ORAS if you have the event Beldum, and this generation introduced Hoopa. What if Alain is a time-and-space traveler?

You thought he was older? Wouldn't it be creepy if he were old enough to be Delia's dad? This does mean that he turned into a grandfather as early as 40, and even earlier in the games due to Daisy...

And Delia is 29 according to Shudo's novel, so one character is confirmed to have almost been a teen mom.

Alain can be around 16 and Sycarmore 34-36 making him be Alain's dad at 18-20. Doesn't sound to far fetched considering his womanizing nature and could add more depth into theor issues and relationship. But sadly it seems unlikely.

Even at 50 he is old enough to be her father (in fact he'd have sired her at an older age than she was when she brought Satoshi forth into the world).
Tbh that dynamic makes me feel uncomfortable anyway regardless of age...
 
They do look similar, and you can even see a bit of evidence on Sycamore's end that he cares about Alain. In the third Mega Evolution special, Sycamore is shown watching about the incident with Rayqueza (i think that was it) and he sees Alain and looks rather surprised to see him there. I know he could just be surprised to see his student there, but it always felt a little much if he knew what kind of trainer Alain was. Also I think in the episode with Sycamore's Garchomp being kidnapped. In the beginning of the episode when Ash and Co are at Sycamore's Lab and Sycamore is showing off the Mega Stone and Key Stone, it zooms in him thinking that he wished Alain were here to see this. It seems like he's close with Alain. Maybe not his dad, but maybe a brother or uncle. Or a father figure. All I know is that if there is some relation between the two. I want it explored before the XY Series ends.

Movie 4 aired a long time ago, so I got used to it. It's more believable than Cyrus being 27, at least.

Even at 50 he is old enough to be her father (in fact he'd have sired her at an older age than she was when she brought Satoshi forth into the world).

I know, but at least it's slightly less creepy when he's 50 rather than 60-70.

I was too fixated on being educated by Silktree and missed this, but good shout! I mean, with the help of Celebi or the time one out of Dialga/Palkia that's pretty plausible!
