No. Naruto is.

Disregard that, I was wrong, the most famous is probably the Dragonball series.

Well... I don't watch enough anime to know exactly who's #1, but without a doubt I'd put Pokemon in the Top 5 or Top 10 Most Famous Anime in the World.:-D
 
I guess, everyone knows Pokémon, even though there are a lot people that don't know it's an anime.
 
It's close. Probably the Dragon Ball saga, Astro Boy, or Pokemon ais.

Astro Boy isn't on air for decades. And Dragonball's popularity is nowhere to near. Even Sailormoon is more popular than Dragonball.

Have... you seriously been living under a rock? Dragonball, and it's spin offs, are the most well known animé in the world. Whether you love it or hate it, it's... actually probably more well known that Naruto or Bleach or any of the mainstream shit you get now-a-days. It was shown in not just Japan, the US and the UK, but in several other countries and gained popularity over the years.

It probably is the most famous Animé, and Pokémon doesn't even come close to it.

...same for pokemon, sailormoon and plenty of them. I can't say pokemon is better than them. But, if you think globally, pokemon is the most popular anime in the world. In my country, and a big part of the world, everybody can recognize Pokemon and Pikachu. Not so for Goku...
 
I could have sworn I've recently heard commercials stating DBZ was the most popular anime series ever.
 
Well, it's famous, but one of the tops, I don't know. Personally I think that One Piece, DragonBall, Sazae San, Doraemon, Shin-Chan, and the like are more popular than Pokemon.

If that's the case then I agree, because I think Pokemon is more widely recognized than any other anime. Seriously between Goku and Pikachu, which one is more likely to be recognized?

Is it the most popular? It's the only Anime still going that I watch regularly. so while it is my favorite and will always be my favorite anime, can't say the same about anyone else. Although in my opinion I disagree about it being the most popular.
 
The only thing "famous" about Pokemon is Pikachu. Only it is included in American pop culture and/or parade floats.
 
Dragonball is more than likely more well-known/famous than Pokemon. Officially ending in 1997, it still puts out and sells DVDs today (individual episodes, season boxes, Dragonboxes, etc.), has at least 15 different video games spawned from it, and is successful enough to warrant a "remake" of the series's most famous portion, DBZ.

As far as popularity goes though, the Pokemon anime is probably more so. One of the few animes broadcast regularly in the U.S., is instantly recognizable, either by the Pokemon, the Pokeballs, the characters, etc., and unlike other animes, has a very long lifespan, due to the constant output and quality of the Pokemon games, making it easy for people to recognize it in the first place.

Edit: Course, I use "famous" and "popular" interchangeably, so what you may say is popular, I say is famous, and vice versa.

Took the words right outta my mouth. The title of this thread asks "is Pokemon the most FAMOUS anime", not the most popular. Being the most popular and most famous are completely two different things. Like I said before, it's no doubt it'd be in the Top 5 or 10 most famous anime in the world....I didn't say popular, I said famous....just to clarify. There's other things in this world that might be the most famous, but at the same time they might end up not being the most popular.

If I just randomly call out "POKEMON" in my class, I'm pretty sure that most of the people (28/30) would recognize it. If I called out "SAILOR MOON" or "DRAGONBALL," I would have a similar response, but I think that they could list more characters from pokemom than the other shows. Not so much for Naruto or Bleach, so it's atleast more famous than that. And because of all the media coverage and parodies pokemon got in its glory day, it's no wonder why it's so renowned.

The only thing pokemon needs now is a live action film, and it's all set...wait, never mind.
 
Pikachu has a balloon in Macy's parade. Does Dragonball?
