Is the Pokemon version of "They Don't Understand" the original?

Earlier today, while I was rummaging around my local Half Price Books, I found Dream Street's self-titled album from 2001. It has the non-Pokemon version of "They Don't Understand". I was vaguely familiar with this version of the song, so I decided to pick it up. After listening to it, I must say that the non-Pokemon version sounds like it was reworked from the Pokemon version, judging by the fact that the lyrics in the non-Pokemon version seem not to flow as well. Anyway, I scanned the liner notes for you to see (highlights by me):

By the way, does anyone else find the name "Cole Diamond" (probably Steve Diamond's son) funny?
 
If I hated the Pokemon version, I wonder how much I wouldn't like the non-Pokemon version?
 
I loved that song on the soundtrack. If I'd like a non-Pokemon version or not, meh, it seems doubtful. But it's no real surprise that the lyrics were re-worked. For instance, in the first soundtrack, a line in the first song "Don't Say You Love Me" is ...and you said you loved me, what's that about? while on M2M (the artist who sang it)'s album, the line is ...and you started kissing me, what's that about?

So yeah, sometimes lyrics just get re-worked or replaced or whatnot. Sometimes not. It just depends.
 
Am I the only one who wonders what the hell these songs even have to do with the movies they're paired with? The inclusion of "Don't Say You Love Me" on the first movie's soundtrack baffled me even in 1999 - it wasn't in the movie itself, and it bore absolutely no relevance to the plot. The only reasoning I could come up with was that 4Kids thought it sounded PokéShippy, and we all know how much the 4Kids folks love AshxMisty speculation, no matter how forced and contrived it is.

"Don't Say You Love Me" is a somewhat different case, in that the song was clearly reworked from the normal version to the Pokemon version (and, all things considered, it's a relatively minor edit). What I'm saying is I think "They Don't Understand" was recorded as a Pokemon song first, then re-recorded into a non-Pokemon song, making it more unique.

It's not uncommon for songs from a movie to have little or no direct connection the film (I tend to think that M2M was chosen in part because their name was similar to the name of two of the featured Pokemon in the movie).
 
To be absolutely fair...the ending themes to the Japanese movies don't always fit, either. What does "Where the Lost Ones Go" have to do with the Darkrai movie? Why is the ending theme to the Giratina movie a pop song about confessing your love to a boy? etc.

It played during the credits. They Don't Understand, however, was not featured in the movie in any shape or form.
 
Actually, "They Don't Understand" was shown in a special that aired on the WB just before the second movie came out. You can see it on the DVD for the movie if you're so inclined.

I thought Where the Lost Ones Go had something to do with Alice and Darkrai.

Or maybe I've been around too many AlicexDarkrai shippers.
