It's actually a really interesting theory. I must admit though, this idea is not my own. I saw it first being mentioned on a youtube channel.

But think about it

Does sophocles "leaving" mean that he's going to start training to be a trial captain

And lillie doesn't have her bag yet, even though in the games she has it right off the bat.

This is probably a stupid question, but I just thought it was worth discussing.

I'm going to guess it's not. That's not to say it's a bad theory or anything, I just think the anime is actively choosing to deviate from the storyline. I personally loved the SM game's storyline, but I can appreciate the anime choosing to take a different route and showing us something else.

Kind of like what they did towards the end of the X&Y anime.

There's a simple answer to that. Has Sun and Moon ever mentioned about a trainer named Ash in-game? Or any of the events that happened exclusively in the Alola region? And no, Red does not count and neither does Ash-Greninja.

There's a better chance of the Mega Evolution Specials being in canon with the games than the Sun and Moon anime. At least that had a line referencing Alain and Mega Charizard X, but that fairly minimal and non consequential in the end. The only chance of the anime being a prequel to the Sun and Moon games if they had somehow connect the game universe with the anime universe via Ultra Wormholes.

I can already think of one problem with this theory.

In the very beginning of Sun/Moon, the games, when Kukui begins with his video message, explaining the Alola region, you can see his Rockruff is with him. However, in the anime, Ash has caught this Pokemon.

In the anime, kukui has the rockruff with him, but he later says ash can catch it. That's not really a problem

The theory is that the anime is a prequel to the games. If Ash caught Rockruff, why does Kukui have it with him again at the beginning of the games, assuming this theory is true?

Why exactly Ash-Greninja dosen't apart from the fact that it's from a demo?
It has no lore relevance to the actual games and even the demo didn't explicitly reference Ash. If Game Freak wanted us to think of him as a game character, they would just have him appear instead of using his Pokemon for special events.

Obviously no. In the anime, Kukui let Ash catch his Rockruff, but in the games, Kukui has a Rockruff in the intro, catching tutorial, and in the Battle Royale (as the Masked Royale). These were just some facts I brought up.

But despite this "rant", it's a quite interesting theory.
