Even if they hardly had any development, did you think that there were something good with the reserves?
Reserves:
Palpitoad
Leavanny
Unfezant
Boldore

It's hard to say that there's nothing good, considering each one has pulled through for Ash at some point, several for Leavanny actually.

Despite being one of the most boring pokemon characters ever, Leavanney does seem all right battling wise. It beat that stupid Uber Koffing and did awesomely against Sawk (despite losing). His Move set was greatly improved by X scissor. Still lame that he has Razor leaf though.

Unfezant lost to a Riolu and was boring as hell, easily the most boring out of the bird pokemon.

Palpitoad wasn't seen enough, which was kinda sad since he was a little more entertaining than the others. I think he would have been a lot more interesting if he had evolved, and expanded his move set to include some physical attacks, like Poison Jab. But sadly he never really came off as anything special.

Boldore had a lot of potential to be a real tank. Establish a Tank battle style, ie sitting still and wait for the opponent to move in, then attack with close up rock blasts, flash cannons and rack smash's. Could have taught it Protect to defend against long range special attacks. And then if the writers had the balls, evolve it and replace rock smash with Super power, turning it into a real powerhouse. But he didn't receive any development after his evolution ep.

They all had Potential, and to some extent still do, but its just never been capitalised

Palpitoad I believe is somewhat strong. He beat Burgundy's fully evolved Stoutland, so that was impressive. It was expected that he'd beat a Darumaka, so that wasn't very special. He narrowly beat Elesa's Zebstrika. However, those loses to Stephan's Zebstrika and Roxie's Garbodor make him seem weaker so I kinda just view him as average. The biggest problem is that he never showed up outside of major battles; like gym battles and tournaments.

Leavanny was pretty good actually. He had great defense in his first stages and then great speed after evolving. His moveset was good and he had a great battling style. Plus he also good a lot of screen time compared to the other three.

Unfezant was a disappointment. She was barely used to battle and often lost, even to un-evolved Koffing and Riolu. It's unfortunate, because I liked Unfezant since she was confirmed to be female and I hoped she'd be used a lot like Ash's last two birds, but we just got another scouting Pokémon.

Boldore was also kind of disappointing. It's only wins were against Clay, due to an evolution, and a rushed battle in the JC. Other than that, it wasn't that good. I also don't understand why the writers couldn't have Ash trade and evolve it. It could have become really powerful. In addition, it also suffered from lack of major screen time.

So overall, I guess Leavanny is the only one that I feel was good.

As a hardcore Palpitoad fan I just want to point out that Palpitoad never lost to Stephans Zebstrika. It was a tie.

Palpitoad always seemed like one of the few reverses with pretty decent strength. It had an okay moveset and it had some pretty good battles every now and then. It would have been nice to show it more often outside of tournaments and Gym battles though.

Levanny was boring, which was kind of disappointing when its initial capture episode showed a nice bit of personality and a cute bit of bonding with Ash, but in spite of that, it actually pulled off some pretty good battles against Koffing and Sawk. It really should have defeated Sawk though. Still, Ash used its moveset in pretty effective ways to make for some good strategies. It would have been better if its evolution into Swadloon wasn't so forced and cheap, but its battles as Levanny were better at least.

Unfezant was a huge disappointment. Her rarely battled and she had even fewer victories. Her moveset was also pretty poor, especially compared to Ash's last couple of Flying types. I was hoping that they would do more with her, but she became easily the most boring out of his Flying types instead.

Boldore wasn't that good either. It only has two wins and they weren't that impressive. It could have been better if they worked on its moveset and gave it more screentime, as well as possibly making it evolve, but it was just kind of there for me. The only reserves that came out look at least decent to me were Levanny and Palpitoad.

They could have been better, but as for now all of them except leavanny can easily be dispatched by a unovan starter.

Leavanny is pretty powerful. It had the best screen time of the reserves and its battles with Koffing and Sawk were good. And its battles in Burghs gym was not bad. So it is strong but the writers could give it more personality(as @Hidden Mew says). Leavannys moveset was also good even if it could have learned something that not were of Leavannys type like Poison Jab.

Boldore sucked. It was just fodder almost everytime it battled. Koffing and Hydregion beat it easily. Its only real win was against a CotD and Clays Excadrill. They could have done much more with it like turning it to a powerhouse but they did not. Moveset is okay.

Unfezant is boring and only defeated Skylas Swanna and Swoobat. Its moveset is not interesting either.

Palpitoad is(obviously)my favorite of these ones and I think that he is really strong too. He has only two losses and one of them was because of Ashs stupidity. Then he has a draw but he endured pretty many powerful moves and his moveset is good. But he has too little screen time but otherwise he could have been really interesting.
