When I was 8, it seemed like every single kid was obsessed with Pokemon. Pokemon is still interesting now, but certainly not as popular. I was wondering if there is an equivalent today? Is there any franchise now that is as popular as Pokemon used to be?

In general, I haven't noticed anything quite as extreme as Pokemon. That is, I haven't noticed any new big fads with a TV show, collectible cards, and video games...

I don't think there will be an equivalent for a long, long time, if ever. Currently, the only equivalent is the Pokémon of today. :]

There don't seem to be any playground fads here atm...

Nothing in my memory was ever as big as Pokemon though. Sure we had those Beyblades and Yugioh cards, but nothing topped it.

Pokémon was so big because it appealed to both girls and boys. When I think of other/new franchises, the only big ones that come to my mind are ones that are aimed either for girls or boys. And they're not as big as Pokémon was.

Yeah, I thinl the shows like Bakugan and ben10 have taken alot of popularity from pokemon. Athouh Pokemon is still at the top, its not like kids bring their games to school and trade. I think its because of Wi-Fi, they can do all the trading at home.

The last big craze, and I mean big, was these water yoyos. They were rubber pulls filled with yoyos. Everyone had one.
Nothing recently though

Yup, it seems that nothing can live up to the fad status of the shows like Pokemon durning the late 90s onwards...after 2003-4 I don't remember a fad as big as Pokemon in their time...

And I have a little cousin just starting school- I would know if there was some big fad now...

Wasn't HSM a big fad at one point?
Nothing I can think of could possibly top Pokemon though.

All the elementary school kids at my school are really in to Bakumon and Webkins... But isn't that old?

I’m a little surprised that no one has bought up Club Penguin because I know that is big with the elementary set now a days.

Still, it doesn’t seem that there isn’t anything that has mega fad status currently, like Pokémon had back a decade ago.
