Did the English dub seriously leave in "I Won't Lose?" As in an Japanese vocal song but instrumental? What? How? Why?

It's just... mind BLOWN!

Oh yeah, I remember that! I looked up the song right after I watched it the first time and listened to it every time I had a battle online. I think the instrumental is a really fun battle theme and am glad they kept it or I would have never known about it.

That's pretty interesting! They probably kept it because it's just the instrumental, but it does show that TCPi has the budget to pay for a separate song for just a 30-second scene in an episode. I bet if the episode originally had the song complete with KAORI's singing it would've been replaced because they would've had to pay extra to use her performance.

4Kids kept Pokémon Ondo playing (vocals and all) during the festival scene of the Kanto Ponyta episode, so maybe JASRAC had different licensing rules back then?

I think it actually did have Kaori's vocals but they just edited it out of the audio. Would've been interesting if they redubbed it with their own lyrics with Erin Bowman singing.

They also kept the instrumental version of Team Rocket's Team Song in pretty much every XY episode where it was also an instrumental in the Japanese version.

I feel like, to TPCi's sound mixers, there's not really a difference between the instrumental version of vocal songs and the rest of the original BGM. We don't really know what guidelines they follow for which pieces they keep (assuming it's not just random, usually they keep battle music, the title card, and Team Rocket's motto), so they could have just decided they wanted to keep this particular piece in the dub.

I actually stopped watching the dub regularly about 6 seasons ago, actually! I mainly just watch now if I'm looking how they handle a specific moment.

And I wasn't even criticizing the dub music in this thread? I was just pointing out how it's not that unheard of for the TPCi sound mixers to keep an instrumental version of a Japanese vocal song.
