What, you ask? What started in Ecruteak. You should know, considering... Oh, never mind. Here's the story:
Ever since the sighting of the legendary guardian of the skies, Ho-ho, the tourism rate has been growing higher and higher. People from all over the pokemon world flocked into Johto to try and summon Ho-ho because it was proven possible. This was a good thing, as it boosted Johto's economy and allowed a setup of a better police force and government. Soon, there was a president of johto and mayors were hired for each town. The mayor of Ecruteak was a vile and greedy man, who delighted in making money at the expense of others. He realized that he could take charge of the Bell Tower and make even more money for himself. The tower was renovated into a hundred-story skyscraper with the same roof on top, three elevators were installed, and cheap little tourist shops opened up. The mayor shut down the Gym and began selling Badges for $3000 each. Toll gates were installed in the entrances to the city, charging $1000 a person to get into Ecruteak. The city was modernized into a city filled with only skyscrapers, and the natural resorces of the area began to dwindle. The mayor was a multi-billionaire by now, and bought the nearby Goldenrod City for 90 million. He took in 70% of the profits of the Game Corner and Dept. store, and renamed the city "New Ecruteak."
The mayor continued growing in money and power, and eventually owned every town and city but New Bark, where the president lived. Three days after the president denied the mayor's buy of the city, the president was assasinated by an unknown organization known as Team Regio. After the entire region was bought, it was renamed the giant "Regio City." Crimes swept across the region, but the mayor did nothing to stop them. Instead, he hired numerous steel and electric type pokemon to build a magnetic floating wall that sprayed a chemical to repel pokemon. Now the pokemon from Johto have moved to Kanto. The rescources have completely run out in Johto, and the mayor is planning an attack on Kanto to conquer it. You are a pokemon trainer in a group known as the "Kanto Rebellion," and are going to try and defend your region from becoming like Johto, or Regio City.

Silv sat in his large study, talking into his poke-gear.
"Yes, ready all Grunts and Admins immediately," he said. "What? I don't care if its the dead of night! Get them to the top of the Bell Tower in five minutes!!!"
Silv got in an elevator and rode up two hundred stories to the roof, where a chopper was waiting for him. He climbed into it and snapped, "Hurry up, slime. Get me to the Bell Tower, NOW!!!"

Gold stood in the ruins of Pallet Town, the site of a bombing by Team Regio a week ago. The twisted metal was still burning hot from the explosions created by matches and Koffing gas. Gold's parents had been killed in the explosion, and so had everyone in town. He moved into the half-destroyed house his parents had lived in, noticing the empty shell of a bomb sitting in a crater in the kitchen. He lifted his poke-gear, sending a text message to everyone on his contacts.
