THIS JUST IN!

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/29/books/29salinger.html

Hard to believe J.D. Salinger was still alive until yesterday. I remember reading Catcher in the Rye a few years ago and it was horrible!

Anyway, I'm kind of relieved that Salinger's finally kicked the bucket. No more real-life Holden. (I mean really, he acted a lot like Holden!) He should have been more open-minded and shared his thoughts about his works. I thought he was being selfish by living as a recluse.

So, what did you think of him? And his book?

I hate that book. Now teachers will be even more adamant about it.

Great.

As for Salinger, the guy had no life. Sad individual.

...so, am I the only one who loved Catcher in the Rye then? >.> I thought he captured the depressed teen mindset very well.

Anyway, this all has been making me interested in what he was like. Now I'm thinking of maybe picking up some non-fiction books about him sometimes. Can't really speak of him as a person since I don't know much, but RIP regardless.

Now I feel stupid, because I thought he was already dead. D:

Oh well. Catcher in the Rye was okay. It wasn't my favorite book, but I didn't hate it. And death is always sad to me, no matter who the person was.

So RIP.

While I didn't care much for Catcher in the Rye, I thought it was a good story, but I couldn't get into it, It is sad to see one of America's greatest author's die. Though I wonder if those rumors about him writing a bunch of stories that he didn't want published until he was dead are true.

Also, considering his reclusive nature, I thought he died a long time ago as well and it wasn't reported.

Funny, since I only just read The Catcher In the Rye recently for the first time (and not by order of some teacher). I liked it. Didn't love it, but I liked it. Not bad. And now he's dead. Go figure. RIP Salinger.

But I still wasn't over Michael Crichton yet...

That's sad. I thought Catcher in the Rye was pretty good. Oddly enough, Holden was my favorite part about it. I thought he was a great character. And the writing was really good...

Catcher in the Rye was actually a good book, IMO. I read it for English class.

It kinda stinks that Salinger had to die...

Pretty weird, I am. The only reason why I never even considered reading this book was because of my disdain for the word "rye". They say not to judge books by their covers, but I do, and my rebuttal: "You eat with your eyes first."

As a result, I have no real emotions toward his death whatsoever.

RIP, Mr. Salinger. A loss is a loss, and the loss of a great author -- my personal feelings on his most famous book aside -- is especially sad.

He should have been more open-minded and shared his thoughts about his works. I thought he was being selfish by living as a recluse.

For someone preaching open-mindedness and condemning him as selfish, that's a very closed-minded, selfish comment. Being a recluse doesn't automatically make someone crazy (though Salinger did have his fair share of problems). Reclusiveness, I would imagine, would be a very natural reaction to fame, especially if it's unexpected or unwanted. Who REALLY wants to deal with the constant questions, nagging, and pressures of being famous? There are some authors who deal quite well with widespread public fame (J.K. Rowling comes to mind), but many, many more who prefer to just hole themselves up in their office/den/bedroom/wherever and continue to write. Also, lots of authors don't like to talk about their own work.

Sad to hear. =( I know that one of the libraries around here had an original (1st publication era) copy of the Catcher in the Rye....shame they lost it. D= But Salinger lived a long life, and he lived it how he wanted. RIP.

R.I.P

Had to read the book for english class.

Thanks.

I adored it too. It's one of my favourite books. But like some of the other people here I also thought he was already dead until I saw the report on the news. :eh:
